Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like to marry Pip, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

So now we know who bonked George on the head. Will the stunning revelation Hmm lead to anything interesting or credible happening? Answers on a postcard, please!

Will Alice and Rex become an item? Will Amber come to her senses? Has Adam's constant languor and fatigue now removed his ability to speak on air?

Over to you!

Eh I don't think FWB/one off shagging is that unusual? Obvs it's Helen so everything is Very Intense.
I also have some oddball exes/people I briefly dated. Didn't-believe-in-dinosaurs man, Passport man (accused me of stealing his), Surprise-child man. I think it's pretty funny, but they were dumped swiftly rather than kept for dramatic scripts.

Nitpicking a bit but re: Helen saying she needs to do the sums for buying that house. Don't all agents ask for evidence of a Mortgage In Principle before even agreeing to a viewing? They did when I bought in 2020.

Helen’s history and relationship with men is complex and difficult. Help me with this:

Before Greg?
Greg - older man, took his own life. I recall Helen got a bit weird with his daughter… wanted her to keep a baby conceived through an inappropriate liaison?
Helen decided to have a child on her own.
Rob - who could forget Rob.
Lee - seemed ok to me.
Dane - never gonna work
Finlay - I reckon we haven’t seen the last of Finlay.

Edited

I think that's all correct, but not quite complete. As far as I can recall, we knew nothing about Helen's love life before Greg. His daughter Annette had sex with an Australian barman Helen was seeing - Leon? I never thought it was consensual on A's part. Annette very sensibly sneaked off to avoid Helen so she could have a termination without Helen's insane pleading to let her adopt the baby or bring her up with A. There was also a holiday overseas with Kirsty when Helen was shagging any male with a pulse.

Wasn't there a journalist that Helen stalked for a bit?

Annette had a not consensual ONS wth Leon. I can't remember the details other than she didn't want to.

@Agapornis , you weren't buying in Ambridge.

Helen needs a shag pad for when Finlay visits.

Darker · 28/02/2026 16:34

Thanks @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g . The business with Annette was awful.

That's right! I knew I'd forgotten something. Her love life has been chequered, to say the least.

FatRosie · 28/02/2026 16:50

What was the chap she stalked called? I don't remember the details but it was back in the days of Mustardland.

The Annette bit from what I remember was Leon came round knowing that Helen was out determined to get his leg over. I can't remember if he plied her with drinks but it was something like that.

BeatriceBatchelor · 28/02/2026 17:04

I got the feeling we won't be hearing Mark Bonnar again. He can't leave his croft, Helen can't leave her cheese.

FatRosie · 28/02/2026 17:09

I have a feeling we will.

I promise there are some perfectly nice council estates out there... I live on one 😂

Isn't Grange Spinney the housing estate/council housing? The biggest menace would be the Button sisters (I think - don't they live there?).
I did try to look up Ambridge's social housing, but all I found out is that near the real life village of Inkberrow they're developing a new housing estate unhelpfully named Ambridge Fields.

The only houses in Ambridge that have ever been said to have been council housing and now to be housing association owned are the twelve houses on the cul-de-sac called The Green, which is across the village green from The Bull – and I think that was where the house Helen and Kirsty were looking at was said to be.

I think Grange Spinney is privately-owned houses built by Jack Woolley some time in the seventies. But that may have been Glebelands.

Agapornis · 28/02/2026 18:21

Ah of course @AskingQuestionsAllTheTime - I'm fairly sure Tracey etc live in a HA/council house?

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 28/02/2026 18:26

They do. Number 6 The Green. William owns number 1, and Amside Properties owns number 2, so the housing association or the council has already sold off some of that road.

I think it was Susan and Neil who bought the house they and their two children were living in, number 1 The Green, under right-to-buy.

FatRosie · 28/02/2026 18:56

@AskingQuestionsAllTheTime , it was. I remember it. Susan got a new front door. Smile

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 28/02/2026 19:19

So she did! I had a clear picture of what that door was probably like, as well; I was doing quite a lot of DIY at that time, and there were front doors for sale in the shops (or should they be called stores?) I was frequenting to buy paint, timber, curtain rails, bannisters and so forth.

FatRosie · 28/02/2026 17:09

What makes you think that? @FatRosie

Their morning after conversation seemed to be concluding that, much as they fancied each other, neither could leave their lives for the other.

It seemed like a plot device to prompt Helen into looking for a house for her and the boys and wondering if there'a a future for her and Dane.

FatRosie · 28/02/2026 19:43

neither could leave their lives for the other.
LDR

There's no future for her with Drane and I want to hear more of Finlay.

BeatriceBatchelor · 28/02/2026 19:46

LDR?

FatRosie · 28/02/2026 19:47

Long Distance Relationship

BeatriceBatchelor · 28/02/2026 20:03

Ah!

I thought they'd dismissed that. Oh well, time will tell.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 28/02/2026 20:14

Re the ex-HA house - social housing varies a lot, obviously. Some of the earliest houses and flats built with good budgets are very spacious and the houses often have lovely big gardens. We lived in a council house in a new town when I was a child. It was fine. Sold last year for £180k, I see.

OP posts:
EBearhug · 28/02/2026 20:14

They may have dismissed it, but they're going to keep finding excuses to meet up anyway.

Bruisername · 28/02/2026 20:21

So was Dane introduced just to remind us what a selfish madam Helen is?

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 28/02/2026 20:22

He seems to have served no other purpose, certainly.

JustAMiddleAgedDirtBagBaby · 28/02/2026 21:08

Back to the county show for a moment, I'm surprised to keep hearing about how it's only for old people and families. Is there not a thriving Young Farmers' in Borsetshire? Our local YF is a big part of the county show and the dance after the show is, I am given to understand, carnage with added hay bales.

OrphanBlankly · 28/02/2026 21:29

Is there a limit to the number of times we can ask ourselves this? 😂😂😂

I think he was called Ross and Helen singularly failed to pick up on the cues when he was clearly going off her.
