As the new year dawns, it seems the nightmare is not over for Helen, and Kate has a sad goodbye that turns into a big problem.

Sorry things are a little late; DH has been in hospital all day after being awake all last night with a chest pain but the wrong sort to be a heart attack, and I have been being a bit anxious and unfocussed. He's fine; pericarditis after a viral infection rather than anything worse, but frightening all the same. He's in a taxi home and let's hope he can get some decent sleep tonight, poor man.

Gosh, @AskingQuestionsAllTheTime - no need to be sorry! I'm glad MrAsking is okay and hope he feels much better very soon.

Judging by the phone message, most of what he feels at the moment is Very Hungry Indeed: he didn't take any money with him to buy a sandwich, and last had anything to eat last night (because if he needed an op he wanted to have an empty stomach so he didn't have any breakfast while we waited for the ambulance). Poor man! There is a hearty sausage stew waiting...

Christmas update on MrAsking is that he feels a lot better and looks less pale grey than he did yesterday after so much lack of sleep, so that's good. And he is looking forward to Christmas dinner, with a home-made raspberry mousse for pudding because we don't want to get revoltingly overfed. The Christmas pudding will become a New Year pudding for that reason.

Did he have some sausage stew? I hope they were Tom Archer Sausages.

Does this week's scriptwriter not realise that The Archers is a long running series that's listened to by people in the 50+ yr old age group who have been listening to it for decades?

Intellectually I expect she does. I think that she may simply lack the information to know what she doesn't know and needs to look up in the digital archive to which they all have access.

That and she is not, I think, used to writing serials as opposed to one-off plays, and therefore is unaccustomed to carrying character consistency from one month to the next, or one year to the next, or one decade to the next. The one-off ideas in themselves are not bad; they are just too often wrong for the people they are applied to.

(And everyone seems to say that things are "Amazing!", which I would find more loveable if it were not so universally uttered.)

I'm glad to hear MrAsking was released into the wild in time for Christmas ... and if there's any of that home-made raspberry mousse left over, can I send a cab to pick it up?

Is it very wrong to hope that Ed'n'Em have a major falling out during training and the Borchester Echo headline reads "Apparently devoted couple die in bizarre chainsaw face-off"?

But she seems not to be so good at serial drama. (And I wouldn't hire her to write haiku, I don't think.)

Couldn't find an Archers Update in Saturdays Mail. But the tv planner for 17 January is ominous "There's a sad goodbye in Ambridge and things go from bad to worse for the Grundys"

Peggy, at a guess. Now that she's in The Laurels, she's a goner. I do hope June Spencer has recorded some cutting final lines.

Oh that seems very soon but it might explain the "she's got the most wonderful room with a lovely view and she's organised all of this herself, so sensible" stuff.

I agree. 'Goodbye' would be the funeral rather than the death.
