Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

ArchersAll views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like to donate your time as a guide at Lower Loxley to save the Pargetters paying someone else a living wage, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks to @Impostersyndrome for the thread title suggestion Buses and trains are sorely lacking, canals might be nearby, but all roads lead to Ambridge, picking up on transport discussions in the last thread. In the end I didn't use it, having in mind the character limit. @TottersBlankly contributed an early draft title Wreathes, wrath, writhing (Jennifer, Lilian, Ruairi). Both good starting points for the new thread, which I hope will last till Jennifer's funeral, surely not too far off now. So, over to you - whither the Aldridges? Also, does anyone care if Lee goes to the US? Is anyone even slightly interested in the Brookfield B&B venture?

I was actually assuming it was a Caesarean section, not a vaginal delivery. I do know how babies are born…..

You're right about that ... because of Elizabeth's heart problem (i.e. the absence of a heart as we know it).

ClownpantsKate · 13/03/2023 14:53

Is Lizard still with Vince?

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 13/03/2023 14:55

It was a Caesarian section, but they still have to take out the one that is at the top first.

why on earth would anyone need to spend 6 months in the LL gift shop at the expense of anything else?

the chance to speak to people who visit and find out which bits they found good and so on? to see what sells, why does a sell but b not? and to improve things. 6 months maybe too much, but 3 months at each of the "departments" at lower level jobs? absolutely

as for male primorgeniture. The rules have been changed only in respect of the crown. All the others, afaik pass down the male line. And the interesting thing is this: should the heir, or non-heir (say, Lily) have a sex-change to become male - and get all the papwerwork to say that for legal purposes they are male - they still don't inherit. but if Freddie changed sex to become female, and legally 2 girls which makes Lily the older and therefore heir? nope. Freddie still gets it.

If that has changed since i last came across it (Times i think but i'm not sure) pls correct me.

Yes, I was reading this morning on Wikipedia about Jamie Lee Curtis' husband's baronetcy (Haden-Guest). JLC's husband is Christopher. It was explaining that it can't be inherited by JLC and Christopher's children as they are female (and adopted, so seems to be a double whammy). It will instead go to Christopher's younger brother Nicholas if he outlives Christopher. Once Nicholas and Christopher have both died it will end because Nicholas has no male children. Christopher has an older half brother but he did not inherit the title because he was born out of wedlock. It's all utter nonsense, like some ridiculous puzzle. JLC has said it's all a bit of an irrelevant curiosity to her anyway, though I vaguely remember seeing her in ermine and coronet at some event once.

Interesting - as one of her kids is a trans woman so was born male…

Dillydallydilly · 13/03/2023 15:14

(or so I understood)

NeverApologiseNeverExplain · 13/03/2023 15:28

Oh, interesting. I just checked and you're right. I wonder if the adoption trumps it anyway, so it's a moot point.

PepsiMaxCan · 13/03/2023 15:34

You need to look at the Lascelles (Harewood for the implications of being born out of wedlock)

Oldest son was born before marriage and so wont inherit title
2nd son who inherits title had his 1st child (son) out of wedlock as well. Then a daughter- in wedlock.

They both needed the queen's permission to marry- I wonder if that was factor.

Brefugee · 13/03/2023 16:10

JLC's husband is Christopher. It was explaining that it can't be inherited by JLC and Christopher's children as they are female

as others have said, i wonder if it will make a difference here (might be an interesting legal precedent - although not one I'm guessing any trans woman would actually want to make if they could avoid it) that one of the daughters is a trans woman?

I mean, it would be awful if you had to go to court and drag up a past that you really don't want to remember just so you can get an inheritance that would otherwise die out?

Maybe the GRR might have the ending of male primorgeniture as a side effect? I have no idea if adopted children are treated the same as biological children in this kind of thing. Also if a peer married a widowed woman with a son, older than children of his first marriage, and he adopted the son, how would that work?

NeverApologiseNeverExplain · 13/03/2023 16:33

Actually the Wikipedia reticle only cites adopted as the impediment in relation to JLC's two kids, not female. It is the female children of Nicholas who are said not to be able to inherit.

I assume there must be something in the legislation about not being able to be adopted. Or Wikipedia is wrong, of course! Smile

ClownpantsKate · 13/03/2023 16:55

i’m sure JLC is happy with her Oscar today!

Middle 5th? That is being different for the sake of it!

Well, there was a whole year to spare between the Lower 5th and the 5th form, I guess they had to fill it with something. It was to do with having a junior school, so what would be year 7 now was the 3rd form.

Nothing too exciting mind, jolly but not 'light relief comedy capers'.

I don't ask for much Blush

Eddie's reappeared, regrettably you can bet he's got some ever-so-chortlingly hilarious comedy caper scheme up his sleeve.

ClownpantsKate · 13/03/2023 17:06

Surely Carrie is old enough and has enough NI contributions to get a state pension so she can put her feet up, or does she have to keep slaving in the dairy for the Grange farm rent money?

We had upper III, lower IV, upper IV, lower V, upper V

UrsulaPandress · 13/03/2023 17:27

Form 2 and lower III plus LVI and UVI

FallonsNewCoat · 13/03/2023 18:54

Yes, we had the same and it took you seamlessly to Lower VI and Upper VIth.

I have been sobered by the thought of Eddie’s birthday celebrations. Undoubtedly the SWs will think they are cheering us up after a very depressing start to the year…

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 13/03/2023 22:10

We had that too. I wonder what Eddie's up to. Anyone rubbing their hands at the thought of another Grundy scam to look forward to? Me neither.

Upper III, Upper III A, Upper llI α (symbol for alpha )

MereDintofPandiculation · 13/03/2023 22:22

We had, prosaically, I,II,III,IV,V,LVI,UVI. Which left me completely bewildered reading Talbot Baines Reec et al, with not only Upper and Lower Iv, but Remove and Shell.

Indeed. As ever, poor Clarrie.

I like Paul and hope he doesn’t leave. But exciting news on Denise’s return!

TherapistInATabard · 13/03/2023 23:55

Weirdly, I really hope Eddie’s not planning a big surprise for Clarrie. She needs little jobs doing day-day not overblown gestures. To use a phrase I loathe, little jobs are her love language!

GoldenCupidon · 14/03/2023 00:20

Was baffled in the Josh and Paul chat where Paul was drinking something and it sounded like he said “good knob”. Obviously it wasn’t that … any ideas?

nice to have some farm chat

NewBootsAndRanty · 14/03/2023 00:46

He said "that's good and hot" (he was drinking coffee).
