Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads, which has now passed 125,000 posts! (See below for further details.)

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you lust after Russ, or other unusual things. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/4197199--The-Archers-spoilers-thread-6-Cant-wait-for-7-02pm-Join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

For the thread title I was very tempted to go with @R4's title suggestion of Come follow the exploits of Brine, Lily, Elizabeth, Usha, Ruari, George and Helen. Know collectively as bleurgh. because on the last thread @DadDadDad, our invaluable statistician, identified a post from @ILoveShula as the 125,000th. Many of us felt it was fitting that the post simply said Bleurgh!. Grin

However, feeling that was a bit niche for the casual listener, I adapted @MayIDestroyYou's title suggestion in the end. Thanks, MIDY!

Back to Ambridge this week, after our enjoyable sojourn at Lower Loxley last week! Will we go with Alice to rehab? (Hope not.) Will the petulant Adam make good his threat to leave Home Farm? (Hope so.) What will Jennifer say? (Lots, I hope, and preferably to Brian.) Will the fete be a triumph? (Of course it will.) Will we ever return to Brookfield, or have they all fallen unnoticed into the slurry pit? (Let's hope Pip did, anyway.) WHERE IS PAT? (Can't answer this one.)

Over to you!

@KimikosNightmare, it's just a word, used on another forum, many years ago.

FoxgloveSummers · 10/08/2021 13:04

And on this one, today. I agree it’s time to drop it.

I’m also intrigued about Alice’s rock bottom though. She’s only been able to behave the way she has because she is so so secure in her family (both in the belief they’ll support and love her, and in their financial support). This could change things.

That still doesn't make it acceptable. It's time to drop it. It wasn't acceptable even at the time it was first used.

theThreeofWeevils · 10/08/2021 13:45

You migjt want to tick the SWs off too, then, Kimikos, because that's one of the things Alice called him.

FoxgloveSummers · 10/08/2021 13:54

I’m not sure Alice is a role model to many on here...

campion · 10/08/2021 13:54

She was using it to deliberately hurt and shock though, wasnt she? Maybe we were meant to form a judgement about Alice (not that I haven't already).

Plenty of births in TA have been out of wedlock but haven't received the same label.

Hear that swishing sound? It's the point sailing over your head.

Only a really nasty person would think it was ok to call Ruari that. But we know Alice is a really nasty person so it's in character for her.

WhoppingBigBackside · 10/08/2021 14:15

"I love love children! I am love child begot, love child instructed, love child in mind, love child in valor, in everything illegitimate."

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 10/08/2021 14:16

Wow! Nasty Alice.

It's all coming out now, isn't it?

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 10/08/2021 14:22

Alice needs to have an afternoon session in The Bull with her Auntie Lilian.

Then we could see who could drink who under the table!

Lil would put Alice to shame Wink

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 10/08/2021 14:23

I'm surprised Alice hasn't started smoking aswell.

Or has she? And I've missed it?

R4 · 10/08/2021 14:50

Can you drop the use of "bastard" please.
Who made you the thread police?Hmm
It is a factual description and it's the whole point of him as a plot-device on TA.

WhoppingBigBackside · 10/08/2021 14:58

If it's good enough for Shakespeare, John Major and Black Sabbath, then it's good enough for me.

"I love love children! I am love child begot, love child instructed, love child in mind, love child in valor, in everything illegitimate."
Are you going to dig out historical derogatory terms for black people or people with disabilities to justify using them now?
theThreeofWeevils · 10/08/2021 15:23

I'm surprised Alice hasn't started smoking as well
Not much point now she's had the baby. Or is smoking to serve as a marker for moral turpitude?

WhoppingBigBackside · 10/08/2021 15:26

@KimikosNightmare, aren't you going to say something about my fattist username?

stilldumdedumming · 10/08/2021 15:32

I just came on to ask Hilary Noakes and her destructive little what now?

Come on you better educated lot, fill me in (you are not hard pressed to be better educated than me on language- I went to a sink school in the 80s!)

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 10/08/2021 15:32

@EBearhug

Bastard Spawn of Aldridge

Yes. Dates back to when his conception was first known of, as no one yet knew if he'd be a boy or a girl.

Some of us have been hanging around the various boards for over two decades.

Haven't we just! 21 years since I first posted on the old BBC board. Shock

I was confused enough when Ruari was busy studying for his A levels when every yr13 teen I knew had finished school for the year (and done their in-house ones), but is he still living round with Ian and Adam?

Where was he when Ian was getting himself into a tizzy about Adam having another affair?

I think Brian and Jenny need to send Alice over to Shula's. She might stay sober(ish) to exercise the ponies.

theThreeofWeevils · 10/08/2021 15:41

Coterie. Almost obscured by the pretentiousness of Snell's accent.

Yes, because Jenny was going to pick him up from there st 07:30 to get to school for 8am or something.

Ian's confrontation with Adam was mostly in the pub. Though presumably there has been An Atmosphere at home. Anyway, surely Ruari is usually out with Ben or Troy or other 18yos from school/college?

Yes, back when the boards were blue. We still had to get permission for Internet access with a business reason, but being in tech support, we had to contact Sun, IBM, etc. I was on-call and waiting for a job to finish before I could go back to sleep in the early hours of the morning, and thought the BBC site would be worksafe to look at to keep me awake. And the rest is history.

I think they need to evict their 30-something daughter and she can (finally) attempt to support herself.

Shula will be no help at all. She is too busy mooning around the place hoping Susan’s husband! will pop back and offer to adjust her damp sling again. I really hope that SL is off the menu this week- having Neil as a love interest is a bridge too far for me.

JanglyBeads · 10/08/2021 17:24

I would think Alice’s venom is pretty characteristic of alcoholics on their way down.
