The Archers: The Crook, the Vet, His Wife & Her Lodger - discussion #80

In full acknowledgement of PseudoBadger's great achievement in providing the previous 79 threads over the past 4 years (and credit to R4 for this thread's title)...

Discuss TA (The Archers). New posters encouraged - it's not (too) cliquey here and plenty of regulars are happy to answer questions. Archers

One rule: no spoilers (ie no mentioning future plot teasers from Radio Times listings etc) - there's a separate thread for that.

So, is Phoebe pregnant? will Anisha dob in (dobbin - geddit?) Alistair?

PS I don't presume to take on PB's role permanently - hopefully the job of starting new threads will rotate among regulars until she returns

I'd be a bit pissed off to be expected to celebrate Chris paying off his business loan

I hate the idea that no-one is allowed to make a success of anything. Emma and Chris have had exactly the same upbringing. Good for him for finding something he's good at and investing in his business. He's a hard worker and he's also had a bit of luck. I hate Emma's obvious begrudgery.

Imbroglio · 18/08/2017 21:07

I feel for Emma. She has a point and Jenny was awful.

I think the real tragedy is the 'affordable' is nothing of the sort.

And because the Grundy's rely on Ed's income to pay the rent on Grange Farm I don't think he'll be willing to make the move and leave them high and dry.

EBearhug · 19/08/2017 01:45

They can't have much towards a deposit anyway, even with Emma's three jobs - it's not so very long since she was at the food bank - a couple of years ago? Maybe a little more. I suspect she and Justin have very different ideas of affordable.

mummytime · 19/08/2017 06:17

Chris would not be doing as well financially if he was paying a mortgage or rent like most Farriers. That house is a huge advantage.

BertrandRussell · 19/08/2017 06:35

I hate the idea that no-one is allowed to make a success of anything. Emma and Chris have had exactly the same upbringing."

Yeah, right. Chris hasn't benefitted at all from a free house.....Hmm

Having a party to celebrate is just soooo tactless.

Mountainviewloo · 19/08/2017 06:57

Chris has had a massive leg up. I'm on Emma's side!

R4 · 19/08/2017 07:22

Emma may be jealous of Chris but she should keep it to herself. Maybe moan privately to Ed but it's quite another thing to say it to Chris's face. Would any of you speak to your brother like that!?Shock

BertrandRussell · 19/08/2017 07:24

"Would any of you speak to your brother like that!?"

I might if he rubbed my face in his luck quite so obviously......

Mountainviewloo · 19/08/2017 07:25

Goodness yes!

Imbroglio · 19/08/2017 07:27

Chris provoked her by talking about oliver probably wanting his house back, opposing the new houses and not being sympathetic to what that would mean to Emma's family.

BertrandRussell · 19/08/2017 07:32

Absolutely. Chris was being awdul.

R4 · 19/08/2017 07:33

I might if he rubbed my face in his luck quite so obviously......

He isn't; he's doing well so he's celebrating. That's what people do.
Emma has made it all about her when it isn't.

When Emma had her children did she celebrate or did she think "I mustn't say anything or I might upset people who are having fertility problems". Of course she didn't.

Velvian · 19/08/2017 07:33

Chris was a total dick. Although, i've been listening for 7 years now & barely heard Chris & Emma have a conversation before, so not surprising they're not close. Why would anyone oppose affordable housing. Weird!

BertrandRussell · 19/08/2017 07:34

And his "success" is due in large part to his Aldridge connections. And Jennifer is being uncharacteristically hideous about the new houses. Why doesn't Jill take that in as a campaign?

Vango · 19/08/2017 14:29

I don't disagree that Chris has had luck. Of course he has, that's the way of the world. But Emma started the argument yesterday when it didn't need to happen. Her jealousy of anyone doing better than her (and I include in that Helen, Fallon and Alice) is revolting. She's so consumed by her resentment that she doesn't seem able to count her own blessings. Her behaviour is ugly.

Redcliff · 19/08/2017 15:23

I'm always way behind on TA but have been able to catch up while on holiday (almost exclusively so I could comment here) . Love Emma right now and I so want her to get a house. I think I would be full of resentment if my ex had inherited a ton of money and my brother was living somewhere for free. Living with my in laws or even my own parents would drive me nuts
I suspect that Ed and Emma will need some major luck of their own though if a house in Ambridge is going to be theirs .

mummytime · 19/08/2017 15:51

I found what Chris said far worse than Emma. I know he had lost his temper but he ended up being deliberately spiteful.
Of course it would be good if at some point this story pointed out how unaffordable "affordable" housing can be. The best hope for Ed and Emma would be some kind of essential rural workers scheme or where someone is applying for housing within the green belt as they are real rural workers.

MikeUniformMike · 19/08/2017 15:59

Tom is a boring twat. His actor is very good though because he really does sound like he could be Tony's son. At least the old Tom had a personality, the current one has the personality of a piece of cardboard.
I dislike Pip.

MikeUniformMike · 19/08/2017 16:00

Emmur is poisonous. She copes well with living with the Grundies and their ferrets though.

Mountainviewloo · 19/08/2017 16:09

I really like Emma.

Gruach · 19/08/2017 16:09

His actor is very good though because he really does sound like he could be Tony's son Grin

Not much effort required there!

(Am too late to thank Pseudo - for majorly improving the quality of my life - on the previous thread. Flowers)

Thanks to R4 and D3 for this one.

BertrandRussell · 19/08/2017 16:16

I don't normally care for Emma- but I think she's fantastic at the moment. Chris was utterly poisonous. And it's significant that the new actor is so much posher. We know which side he's on now.

I was surprised at Jennifer, though.

TheAntiBoop · 19/08/2017 17:56

Emma is turning into her mum

Mountainviewloo · 19/08/2017 18:26

I think she has way more substance to her than Susan.

TheAntiBoop · 19/08/2017 19:20

I think Susan has substance. She's a good character - goes through waves of being particularly bad though!! It sounds to me that Emma is going to take her place eventually.

I thought the sibling argument was overdone tbh.
