It was quite refreshing having Oliver give the Grundy's what for.

I still think Eddie doesn't quite get it.

RubyRoseRing · 21/07/2017 19:29

Wasn't that excellent.Great to hear the Grundys being told what's what at last. Meadow Rise here we come?

RubyRoseRing · 21/07/2017 19:37

Funny, l'd never imagined ClarrieLove and Eddie not being together, but it is possible. I'd like to have a new Clarrie as, if we're to have HappyandFulfilled Clarrie, this one's voice is too quavery. And Joe should have a naice and gentle exit, so we don't get a rerunof Meadow Rise and the rest of it.

Imbroglio · 21/07/2017 19:41

Hmm...

Oliver evicts Grundy's; Joe dies of broken heart; Joe haunts Oliver; Oliver gives Grange Farm to EdEmma to salve his conscience.

Oliver evicts the Grundy's; Joe looks soulful; Oliver moves in to Grange Farm with Joe and takes up ferret racing.

Oliver tries to evict the Grundy's but falls into a culvert on his way to tell them and is never seen again. His 'written in haste' will bequeaths Grange Farm to the Borsetshire Wildlife Trust or the Happy Friends Cafe.

BertrandRussell · 21/07/2017 20:08

I do think Oliver was a bit unfair about them using the master bedroom...

DoctorTwo · 21/07/2017 20:21

I think Oliver has been beautifully written and acted since Caroline's death. I really felt for him during that scene with Clarrie and 'Orrible Eddie.

Cromwell1536 · 21/07/2017 20:22

The Grundys have been piss-takers (not Ed and Emma, their stupid fucking parents) this time. Even Joe knew in 'is waters it were wrong. With luck, Ed will somehow come into a bit of money and they can find somewhere of their own, Joe will pass on peacefully and Clarrie (whom I don't like for not standing up to her idiot husband - she could have rounded up her other family members and quelled him) and Udd-ay will bugger off somewhere else. Oliver was good to them, and they've taken the piss royally.

Vango · 21/07/2017 20:29

You've got to be kidding Bertrand! Oliver and Caroline were emotionally blackmailed into allowing the Grundys to stay in their beautiful home. Eddie and Joe have shown total disrespect for their possessions from the outset (remember the chaise?). Oliver's been a model of restraint up until now. Even Clarrie had reservations about handing over 'her' bedroom to guests; I can absolutely see why it's the straw that breaks the camel's back from Oliver's point of view. And there was real grief in his acting tonight I thought.

RubyRoseRing · 21/07/2017 20:53

What was the situation with the master bedroom? Were Clarrie and Eddie allowed to use it? I hoe Oliver doesn't sleep on it and give in yet again.

BertrandRussell · 21/07/2017 20:56

I think Oliver was quite justifiably furious. But Clarrie and Eddie have been using that bedroom-

RubyRoseRing · 21/07/2017 21:12

Causing confusion! Sleeping on it nothing to do with that bed.

I did wonder at Oliver going on about te bed if C and E were using it. But recent and major bereavement can make people very sentimental. Is Oliver staying with Shula or at GG? So my questions. Soz as the young people say!

R4 · 21/07/2017 21:32

Oliver has been unnaturally chipper since Caroline's death. I think that having a rant at the Grundys will do him good; he needed a release for his anger/grief.
He will apologise in a day or two but I hope that Clarrie stays true to her word and they leave Grange Farm. The Grundys have been strangely entitled about it for too long and, having lost it twice now (both times through their own failings), I hope that they graciously move on. But I really hope that it isn't the death of Joe.Sad

Oliver is staying at The Stables with Shula and Alistair.

birdsdestiny · 21/07/2017 21:33

The episodes about Caroline have been just lovely. They have reminded me why I love the archers.

R4 · 21/07/2017 21:46

Agreed. They have been a lovely tribute to Sara Coward.

echt · 21/07/2017 22:11

I sort of got Oliver talking about holding Caroline on his knees, and don't understand why not being religious has anything to do with it, the ashes are what's left of them in the world. When DD and I went to collect my DH's ashes, the crematorium folk referred to them as him (by name). We were inwardly Hmm but supposed that their training had led them to this being the best way, just as we were led to a little room, though we'd been rather expecting it to be like picking up the dry-cleaning.

Anyway, back to Oliver. What a splendidly acted encounter with the Grundys, and his range of emotions over these last few episodes has been faultless.

echt · 21/07/2017 22:12

Oh, and how will Lillian take Justin's vow to "crush" Matt. Will this be the thing to split them up?

LillianGish · 21/07/2017 23:11

I always found it slightly hard to believe that the Grundys would ever have been invited to move into Grange Farm - once it had been expensively renovated after the flood they were hardly the ideal caretaker tenants. Once they did move in it was too much to hope they might make an effort and behave responsibly - in fact they seemed to go out of their way to wreak the maximum havoc, farming pigs outside the backdoor before moving the pigs onto an SSSI, allowing baths to overflow and then replastering themselves, opening a b and b. Justin was justifiably furious, but should have expected no less. I think his outburst was probably fairly cathartic as he'd seemed pretty in control up to that point for someone whose wife had died so suddenly however I think it will have done him good and won't be at all surprised if he ends up concluding that the Grundys should allowed to stay because that's what Caroline would have wanted. He may actually turn out to be the Ambridge housing fairy as far as the Grundys are concerned. As a side note, interesting to hear Oliver and Justin together in a scene tonight as I think they sound so similar. Justin appears to be distinguishing himself by becoming more and more unpleasant - Lillian can't be failing to notice this.

Abra1d · 21/07/2017 23:35

So similar you muddled them up in your post! 😉

Abra1d · 21/07/2017 23:35

And I was muddled up too while listening this evening.

C8H10N4O2 · 22/07/2017 00:38

they were hardly the ideal caretaker tenants

In many respects Clarrie would be the ideal caretaker tenant. She probably would be even with Joe in residence.
Eddie on the other hand is an often charming but Olympic grade liar and will never resist any dodgy deal. He and Joe (when younger) took every shortcut and then blamed others when things went wrong. I do often wonder what Clarrie did in a previous life to be stuck with the lot of them.
I've also never much liked the way the 'poorer' farmers were portrayed in the Archers but that is a separate issue.

Gruach · 22/07/2017 06:26

Yes ... Like R4 and Lil'G (as always) I'm certain that after his cathartic outburst Oliver will return to his role as Grundy Fairy Godmother. Still think he might move in with them. Still think they'll need Stella Gibbons ("our greatest living writer"Wink) to do it justice.

Do any of you remember an absolutely stellar episode - few years back but within the lifetime of this thread - set in Ambridge View, with Ed and Emma and Fallon (?) and a dog and a lampshade? Was exquisitely chaotic. That's how I imagine Grange Farm in the future with Oliver there. And really, rumbustiousness is the only balm for his wounds - too much good taste would only leave him time to brood.

TheAntiBoop · 22/07/2017 07:51

He wouldn't let them stay because that's what Caroline would have wanted - she wanted them out!!

Eddie has been beyond awful and I doubt very much Oliver would want to live with them - his niceness to the grundys is because of ed - not Eddie or clarrie

Gruach · 22/07/2017 07:55

Nah ... SOC seemed to insist on a mis-writing of Caroline. Far too snipey. The "real" Caroline would absolutely want everyone she'd ever known to have the jolliest life possible after her demise.

R4 · 22/07/2017 08:20

I'm trying to think where the Grundys will move to. It has to be something farm-like.
Maybe Oliver, as penance for his outburst, will help them get planning permission on Grundy's Field and Clarrie will have a self-build to rival Susan's (plenty of scope for SL there).

TheAntiBoop · 22/07/2017 08:23

I'm not sure why everyone thinks Oliver owes the grundys anything

The level of help they get from people is totally implausible
