Sorry but I couldn't resist an opportunity for puns galore Grin

Welcome to the thread, btw.Smile

Shuffled off this mortal coil, Itchy. (Hope it gets better soon!)

Yes, TheOne, the re-casting of Tom was an extraordinary decision and one I'm not reconciled to yet. Give it another 40 years and I might have come to terms with it. Hmm

Moir Leslie was the name of the Sophie/Janet actress.

Annabelle Schrivener's actress had lots of small parts in TA over the years (most notably Scarlett Del Monte, an exotic dancer who lost her snake at Grey Gables) before she landed a long-term role. (Yes, I did have to google to refresh my memory there! Wonderful what you can find out via the internet.)

InimitableJeeves · 27/09/2015 22:42

I was there, Davros! IIRC, SOC sidestepped the question about online discussion groups by talking about the Plarchers. I think he also sidestepped the question about recasting, which was specifically about why Tom had been booted. I wanted to ask a question about the Brookfield sale saga - principally why the hell - but didn't get picked. I felt some of the questioners wasted their opportunities: e.g. there was one moaning about the continuity announcers commenting after the broadcast, but most people in the audience said they liked it; and someone with a technical question about why the programme was going out on mono or something, to which SOC didn't know the answer.

I was impressed by the actor playing Rob. He said he escaped a lot of the hate because no-one knows what he looks like but he had had some people telling him they hated him. He was talking about how he liked doing a long running radio programme because, unlike when you act in a film or play, he doesn't know where the character is going in the long term. Brine said he'd had people telling him off when he had the affair with Siobhan, and that he now loved the fact that someone else was the hate figure. He was hilarious about the trials of being married to Jennifer for 40 years.

Davros · 27/09/2015 22:52

InimitableJeeves ah yes, that was it, The Plarchers! And the woman who asked about the recasting of Tom was quite clear about her disgust with how the actor was treated but it got toned down, we're all far too polite!
I actually wanted to say a lot more but decided to keep it simple in case of being cut off inc the Brookfield sale. I wanted to say that (obv) a lot of the listeners are women and two major stories women know a lot about are looking after an elderly relative and the Ruth and HP SL is full of holes and then the one about the disabled child

EBearhug · 27/09/2015 23:36

I thought Kate was on at least the third actor.

I thought Tom Graham (original Tom actor) had got a PhD in psychology.

JessieMcJessie · 28/09/2015 00:15

I was there too! SOC (who was sort of OK [ducks]) said that Helen Archer was like a "flinty" Ibsen heroine in the hands of Louiza Patikas and that the whole idea for the very involved Helen and Rob storyline came after seeing her and Timothy Watson acting together.

Carole Boyd said that Lynda was inspired by JR and Alexis Colby (!) and it was her idea to make her really, really annoying as the original brief was "yuppie doormat". She forgot Leonie's name. She was charming though.

Timothy Watson is HOT. I can quite see how Helen would be seduced by him....

I too sighed deeply when that bloke wasted his question opportunity by banging on about broadcasts in mono...the poor lady in front of me was obviously a mega fan (she was wearing an Archers T shirt) but didn't get picked despite waving her hand wildly every time the mikes got close.

On recasting, SOC pointed out that Grace had been recast at least once, so a very old precedent for recasting a major character. Quite amusingly when the question was asked about characters sounding alike, Eddie Mair asked the audience who sounded similar and the response was an instant chorus of " Charlie and Tom!".

The reports about Timothy Watson getting social media abuse are blown out of proportion- he joked about having to stop looking at Facebook but said that he obviously saw it as good to be told how much people hated Rob because that meant he was good at his job. I felt for him a bit though because I am sure he knows that Rob will eventually get his comeuppance and have to leave (in a box?) so he has no chance of being a long running character like the others onstage with him.

Gruach · 28/09/2015 00:23

Factors determining level of hotness ...?

CuttedUpPear · 28/09/2015 00:29

Welcome Efferlunt! Brew

And good work Davros Cake

Eastpoint · 28/09/2015 06:41

Just listened to last night's episode, Rob is just foul. I can't believe Pat is sucked in, she has always been ethical & stood up for what is right.

CuttedUpPear · 28/09/2015 08:04

I don't know if any of you lot were involved in this, but good work! Shut your mouth Deevid

BYOSnowman · 28/09/2015 08:37

Pat is behaving most oddly

Rob is being a little too blatant now isn't he? And I'm not sure we need a full on homophobia sl coming from rob either

InimitableJeeves · 28/09/2015 08:56

I do hope Helen managed to email the incriminating bit of film to someone before Rob deleted it.

enochroot · 28/09/2015 09:01

He's really confident now. All he wants is in his grasp, or will be once he has control of Henry by which means he will have full control over Helen.
This makes me think it's all going to unravel for him fairly soon.

It was sad that Johnny said Rob's way was the only way he knows how to play. Pat, get a grip please.

R4 · 28/09/2015 09:17

I hadn't heard of talkyeaty. Well done David for listening to criticism and reacting to it; it would be lovely if the BBC did the same. But shame on Jenni Murray for lying and pretending.Shock

R4 · 28/09/2015 09:23

This makes me think it's all going to unravel for him fairly soon.

After the Grace thing, we are all a bit cynical now. Apparently autumn is the time to start a Big Story with a climax at Christmas. So "fairly soon" will be about three months.

PS: about the Grace thing again. There will be another 60-years-since-the-death-of on Wednesday. Guess who.

enochroot · 28/09/2015 09:42

It probably will take about 3 months for Bridge Farm people to notice that he's screwed up over the shop re-furb, spent all Peggy's 10 grand, put H's name down for a prep school etc.

BYOSnowman · 28/09/2015 09:45

As long as he isn't bashed over the head with an iron on xmas eve and fed to toms pigs...

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 28/09/2015 09:49

Oh my goodness, just listened now! The worst thing to listen to is not Rob's cheating, or his homophobia, or his deleting of the film, or Henwy's DADDEE DADDEE DADDEE - it's just unbearable listening to Pat on the subject! You can hear the goo in her mouth!

Also, I know you can't really 'do' sport on the radio, but I hate the device of 'Oh hullo you two, what's been happening in the game so far? Oh look, it looks as though he's going to bat.... oh look, he's looking at the sky'. Really clunky.

Are we allowed to comment on the Radio 4 site's comments for upcoming shows here?

R4 · 28/09/2015 09:55

Are we allowed to comment on the Radio 4 site's comments for upcoming shows here?

I don't think so. I think the rule is that you post here if it has been [past tense] broadcast. If people are behind in their listening then they are recommended to stay away until they have caught up. Anything relating to upcoming goes on the spoilers thread.

BYOSnowman · 28/09/2015 10:13

Yes a lot of people on the thread don't read them so kept strictly to spoilers. This thread is for discussion of what has been broadcast and speculation!

squeaver · 28/09/2015 10:14

Now Tony knows he cheated so he can also be added to The List. So disappointed in Pat and can you imagine her reaction when she finds out H is pregnant?

I really, really hope that we hear Adam discussing it with Ian (the homophobia isn't new, cf the scenes with Charlie). THEN, Kirsty will be back at GG and she and Ian can begin to plot the downfall.

Where, was Charlie, btw? I thought he was in the cricket team too.

Toomuchtea · 28/09/2015 10:19

Yes, I wondered that. Where was Charlie? I was waiting for him to gallop up from the outfield, or whatever it's called (decades being married to the world's biggest cricket fan has made distressingly little impact) and for him to come to Adam's aid and for them both to demolish Rob. Very, very, very disappointed that this did not happen.

InimitableJeeves · 28/09/2015 10:21

Are we sure Helen is pregnant? It seems to me that her bouts of nausea are always linked to something to do with Rob and/or adoption, and could as easily be attributed to her eating disorder.

JessieMcJessie · 28/09/2015 10:23

Ha ha gruach. All very subjective re hotness but sort of slim but firm, full head of hair, piercing eyes and rather striking cheekbones...
