A quote of £8k to paint the inside of 3 bed house!

I need to get more quotes, but is this normal? We live in North London.

I want the paintwork painted white and walls painted too. We have 3 beds, hall stairs and landing and a through lounge/ diner.

Does this sounds right to you?

Abolutely no way ! My DH is a painter/decorator and unless your live in the queens house in London I can't see why it would ever cost so much

MarshaBrady · 17/05/2010 13:57

No. Too high.

Feelingsensitive · 17/05/2010 13:57

I live in SW London and have just had the walls and ceilings painted in three large rooms and a bathroom. Admitedly no skirting boards, etc for £1300.

MadreInglese · 17/05/2010 13:57

OMG that sounds extortionate!

(but I am northern, and tight, and do my own painting so have no idea really!)

noddyholder · 17/05/2010 14:01

Ridiculous get some more quotes!

msrisotto · 17/05/2010 14:05

www.ratedpepole.com and www.mybuilder.com are places where you put up an advert of the work you want doing and painter/decorators will get back to you with a quote.

They also said it would take around a month to do. I thought two weeks max! It's only a terraced house.

I'd love to do it myself, but at 5 mths pg, I'm not sure it's a great idea.

Will def get more quotes and let you know.

That seems very high. Do you have lots of fiddly windows? Old/Bad paint job that will take a lot of prep work?

Get at least 2 more quotes!

MarshaBrady · 17/05/2010 14:15

A month! No, too long.

FoghornLeghorn · 17/05/2010 14:21

I'll ask my DH for a rough price

wahwahwah · 17/05/2010 14:21

No way. My builder quotes (aprox) £200 per room. And that includes paint.

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 17/05/2010 14:37

What are you asking them to paint it with?

It may just be a "we are really not interested in doing this job" level of quote.

TheGashlycrumbTinies · 17/05/2010 14:43

We have just paid £1000, for hall, stairs, and landing (walls and woodwork).

All doors and skirting were in good condition, so no repairs, just basic prep.

There are 10 doors off this area, and I think that is what pushed up the price.

It did include gloss and emulsion.

darcymum · 17/05/2010 14:45

I'll do it for you for £7,000

Spidermama · 17/05/2010 14:46

I'll do it for you for half that.

NorbertDentressangle · 17/05/2010 14:49

£8K

Who gave you that quote? Michaelangelo?

Meglet · 17/05/2010 14:51

Try your local trading standards website as they now have tradesmen they recommend. I bet they are a darn sight cheaper than £8k and should be reliable.

DilysPrice · 17/05/2010 14:53

I'm South London, and even the quote we rejected as clearly taking the piss was a LOT less than that. Tear it up and get three more quotes - and ask friends/workmates for recommendations. The nice thing about decoration is that it's not rocket science, you don't need someone hyper-qualified, you just need someone who's done it before and who won't nick stuff while you're out.

Kathyjelly · 17/05/2010 14:54

So basically six rooms, so £1300 each. It seems a lot.

Are they sanding everything down, washing all walls and ceilings, supplying the paint themselves? Farrow and Ball?

Still seems a lot. I'd get some more quotes

I've recently paid 500 quid for hall, stairs and landing with ceilings, walls and woodwork done, I supplied the wall emulsion they supplied the satinwood for the woodwork. There are 7 upstairs doors and they also painted the louvred (yuk) hall cupboard door.

So I reckon 8 grand is extortionate, even for London. I agree with ProfessorLayton that that's a "we don't want this job" quote.

stressed2007 · 17/05/2010 14:55

hey can anyone suggest a painter in the londonish areas? Thanks

BalloonSlayer · 17/05/2010 14:55

We just had hall stairs and landing, plus kitchen and breakfast room stripped of their wallpaper, lining paper put up and painted, all woodwork painted, plus one side only of 11 doors painted. It cost £1800 and I still have not got over the financial shock.

I did not look around for anyone else to do it as I trusted the blokes in question they did it while we were on holiday. It took about 6 days, apparently.
