A quote of £8k to paint the inside of 3 bed house!

I need to get more quotes, but is this normal? We live in North London.

I want the paintwork painted white and walls painted too. We have 3 beds, hall stairs and landing and a through lounge/ diner.

Does this sounds right to you?

May not be as unreasonable as you think. A couple of years ago we had kitchen, dining room, utility, hall stairs and landing painted, plus some work outside and it came to £2500 as it took nearly 5 weeks. I was happy as I'd taken a guess at how long it would've taken me to do it and I thought nearly twice as long! There was a lot of preparation to do (100yo house) and the skirting boards were mostly new so needed sanding/priming/undercoating etc.

We're in Hemel Hempstead and our decorator is excellent - he'd probably come as far as you and I think charges £130 a day now.

I can't believe that you could get someone to paint 8 rooms for 450.

Well that's what it said on the leaflet. There are a hell of a lot of unemployed people (14%) here in massive negative equity, and they are all undercutting each other. I had two guys wash all my windows and cut the grass, cut back the bushes and weed the patio for €30 the other day.

Like most things in life you tend to get what you pay for...
Slap on a quick coat of emulsion with no preparation... or get it all rubbed down, cracks filled and sanded etc.

VAST difference in price.

NorkyButNice · 18/05/2010 10:03

I didn't think you were fibbing!

Just that I bet he'd come and look at the work needed and end up quoting a hell of a lot more.

For £8K I'd want a whole new extension, not just painting ... rip-off. We have a builder/decorator that we've used for work before and he charges £100 per day and we generally buy the materials, paint, etc. We are in Colchester, Essex.

fifitot · 18/05/2010 18:30

No my bloke does all the rubbing down and filling. He does a good and long lasting job.

hugebelly · 19/05/2010 20:22

Got another quote yesterday; £4k +VAT.

Honestly, it's ridiculous. They don't even need to paint the doors. Oh well, looks like I'm going to do it myself and spend the weekend recovering in a spa.

£4K - what are these blokes wanting to paint with? Gold leaf?

I will try and ask my painter what he would charge for that capacity of rooms. I suppose if they charge £150 labour and they take 2 days per room apx then labour alone might be around £1200, they you'd need to factor in paint and how many men involved. I still think 4K is too much though. 2K plus might be more reasonable, 3 at a push.

Maybe if you ask the next lot what their daily rate is and work from there? Good luck!

Also in London and we received leaflets through the door from Elite Student Painters. They are based in North London and do a lot of business over the summer holidays.
