A quote of £8k to paint the inside of 3 bed house!

I need to get more quotes, but is this normal? We live in North London.

I want the paintwork painted white and walls painted too. We have 3 beds, hall stairs and landing and a through lounge/ diner.

Does this sounds right to you?

Ridiculous.

I have a large home and paid around £3K.

hugebelly · 17/05/2010 14:59

Right, got a chap coming tomorrow.

The men who came today were commercial decorators, not that it would make a difference.

Here's how the priced the job:

Hall, Stairs and Landing: £3k and one week
Lounge/ Diner: £2k and one week
3 beds at £1k per room and two weeks

Just want a standard paint job using standard Dulux paint.

I'm guessing around £3k would be average, but I shall have to see.

Oh, and they would prefer cash otherwise it would be £8k + VAT!!!!!

I would want it painted with gold leaf for that much!

Once rented a place where the landlord (through a letting agency) agreed that I could paint the front room purple(I know, I know) as long as I put it back to white when the tenancy expired. Lo and behold at the end of the tenancy I was told that the agency could take care of it if I liked. Oh, and it would cost the exact same amount of money as I had paid for my deposit . Needless to say, I did it myself for the £15 that it cost me to buy a tin of paint.

A friend just had four rooms in her house painted for around £800, but we are up north.

I'll help you Riven

stressed2007 · 17/05/2010 15:15

hugebelly where about are you? Also having same problem in N London

Thediaryofanobody · 17/05/2010 19:03

Wow you'd be cheaper to pay to do a painting and decorating course then doing it yourself in really expensive paint!

Tortington · 17/05/2010 19:11

you buy the paint and mask it all off and i've got a 17 year old who would sleep on your sofa, work day and night and do it for £500 (inc. meals - he doesn't eat potatos btw) when dya want him?

stressed2007 · 17/05/2010 19:21

mm...I will seriously think about it.

hugebelly · 17/05/2010 19:55

Stressed - I'm in Muswell Hill

Custardo - you're hilarious!

noddyholder · 17/05/2010 20:34

custy does he want a job this summer/

PatriciaHolm · 18/05/2010 08:29

Ridiculous - we're having the entire inside and front outside of our 5 bed (+study, dining room, playroom, big kitchen) done, in Surrey, for 4.5k. 8k is ridiculous! I think it's going to take about 3 weeks (there are 2 of them, and they are also doing some papering in the hall)

fifitot · 18/05/2010 08:35

I am in the North but our painter charges by the day - we get mates rates but usually he will do it for around £150 per day plus paint which he gets at trade prices. Our hall, stairs, landing is going to be £450 max.

You need to ask them what their daily rate is and then decide - though 8K is frankly taking the piss.

Tortington · 18/05/2010 08:44

you got something in mind noddy?

stressed2007 · 18/05/2010 08:46

custardo do you think he could paint outside?

BouncingTurtle · 18/05/2010 08:52

Fifitot - your painter doesn't live anywhere near Stockton-on-Tees, I'm looking for someone to paint to downstairs rooms + hall, stairs and landing!

NorkyButNice · 18/05/2010 08:54

I think a lot depends on what condition your walls are in to be honest - we've had the whole house painted by the same people (but in stages rather than all in one go) and we've paid:

Kitchen : 520
Bathroom : 250
Lounge : 600
Dining Room (including original wood French doors that needed stripping and repainting) : 1050
Hall, stairs, landing (including stripping and painting 8 doors that lead off it) : 1800
Stripping and repainting stained glass window : 250
Exterior (not done this yet) : 2650

We painted the 3 bedrooms ourselves.

Our walls were in shocking condition - we'd removed 5 layers of wallpaper from each room, and there were holes and cracks that needed filling and sanding throughout. The woodwork was all yellowy so needed stripping. They spent minimum 4 days per room, and 2 weeks on the hall, stairs and landing.

We live in an average 3 bed semi with a small extension.

NorkyButNice · 18/05/2010 08:57

Actually, I'm interested to know from those who paid really low amounts, how extensive a job they did? How much sanding the walls, undercoats, topcoats etc?

fifitot · 18/05/2010 08:59

Sorry - no, Cheshire!

glastocat · 18/05/2010 09:09

Wow! We got a leadlet through the door from a local painter yesterday. He will paint living room, kitchen, hall, 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms for €450!

NorkyButNice · 18/05/2010 09:12

I can't believe that you could get someone to paint 8 rooms for 450.

Assuming they spent just one day on each room (and what kind of a job are you going to get for that?) - that's a daily rate of less than 60 pounds. I don't know any competent professionals who charge that little.

stressed2007 · 18/05/2010 09:15

Looking on here I think the quotes we have had for our house per room are as much a mickey take as hugebelly has had.

akhems · 18/05/2010 09:20

I had mine done by a local man who charged me £150 per day. He did all the prep, sanding, filling etc and I'd highly recommend him.

I'm just down the road from Muswell Hill in highgate so I can ask him if you like?

cockles · 18/05/2010 09:31

Definitely too much. I got someone from the Dulux website who turned out to be fine and not overly extortionate.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 18/05/2010 09:35

they're 'avin a larrrrf!

MrsMills · 18/05/2010 09:41

You'll love this then. I just received 2 quotes to have the outside of my house painted (3 bedroomed detached).

Between £12000 and £14000.

Count your blessings OP!
