Is royal mail redirection worth it?

Moving house but only moving around the corner (literally). Royal mail redirection, which we have done for previous moves, is now over £100 for a year.

Is it worth it given we are so close by?

For the new buyers sake then yes! Otherwise they have to keep it and be available for you to collect it.

Well yes I think so. Being nearby doesn’t mean you will have access to the post through another person’s letterbox.

If you don’t do redirection and something is delivered to your previous address, what would be your way of getting it back?

Well the previous owner of our house moved not too far - just over a 5 minute walk. I still get mail after 6 years and it’s REALLY ANNOYING!

If you want your letters, then yes. When we moved into new houses, all letters with other peoples names was returned to sender or shredded.

Yes. Anyone who doesn't arrange redirection is utterly selfish (and/or a fool - ever heard of identity theft??). Why should the new owners of your house be your postbox just because you live close by and want to save a few quid?

Please do. Keeping your mail and dealing with it is a pain in the neck. Especially all your bloody catalogues.

I moved less than a mile away and got it for 6 months.

Royal Mail got a bit excited at first and forwarded some of my post to my sellers, and some of my buyers post to me but we are all within about a mile radius so it was easy to pass on or collect.

I think my sellers only got it for 3 months so I’ve made the effort to ‘return to sender’ all their catalogues, which is a pain. It’s a bit worrying that after nearly a year I am still getting letters from HMRC for them.

Yes, it's worth it. When I moved I paid for 6 months re direction which gave me enough time to update my new address on everything.

Yes, please do this. We have just moved house. We paid for the mail redirection for 6 months in case there was anything we forgot to change address on that slipped through the net.

The people who's house we bought have not done this and they have had a lot of mail and even parcels delivered!! It is so annoying having to refuse delivery or having to return to the sender.

You can have it redirected for 3, 6 or 12mths and yes, I would and currently do have it redirected.

Unless you know the new owner well and they'd be willing to collect and give it to you every few weeks then of course you should get it redirected. There are always things that you forget to redirect.

It’s polite to not put a responsibility on the new owners or keep tuning up at their door

Just do it for 6 months, that should cover everything you get in that time. There's always something you've forgotten!

Yes 100%. We moved 2 miles just before Christmas and a few weeks ago got a letter from a car insurance company we had used a few years ago (not the current insurer so would never have changed address with them) saying they had underpaid for a claim and that enclosing a cheque! We’d never have got that money if we hadn’t set up a redirect.

See it’s easy to think you’ve changed everything, but you forget stuff. It’s getting the redirected letter that reminds you about eg that pension statement from your pension fund for the job you had ten years ago.

I bet you £100 that there’s at least one piece of mail you’ve not thought of - a distant relative’s Christmas card, pension letter, gift catalogue.

I consider mail redirection just one if the costs of moving. It’s a small amount in the scheme of things and a courtesy to your buyers.

I clean forgot when my bank cards were running out and thankfully had the redirection in place. So they came to me. Not someone else.

Or the speeding fine, because the car's registered keeper forgot to inform the VLA that they'd moved. Oh what fun I had trying to prove that they no longer lived here and I had no idea who they were or where they were.

Well I'm sure the previous owners of my house thought they had changed all their addresses too, but 8 years later I still get regular post about Fido's pet insurance and random catalogues plus several christmas cards from their friends. It's difficult to remember all the organisations that have your address and to update them all before you move

Nooo, not just 6 months as that excludes things you only get yearly, like pension statements and insurance renewals. 12 months is best and totally worth the money.

I did and yes it was worth it. Saved me a 20 mile round trip every time to pick up post.
