Is royal mail redirection worth it?

Moving house but only moving around the corner (literally). Royal mail redirection, which we have done for previous moves, is now over £100 for a year.

Is it worth it given we are so close by?

Yes, a previous neighbour moved out and asked me to forward her mail to her. She asked the buyers to give me all her mail. The buyers, my current neighbours, are lovely people but this soon became a chore for both of us. I think after a year they stopped giving me the mail so they probably put return to sender on the mail.
A friend had the previous owner on her doorstep every few days asking for mail. In the end she didn’t answer the door to them.
Redirect your mail! Pay for it.

Bloody annoying for the new owners if you don’t because I bet you despite being someone who receives few letters there will be something that slips through the net. Have you bought your new place? Because £100 is nothing if you have and I did when I moved rental. Also you might miss something really important.

Your mail should not be the new occupants problem because you've moved nearby.

Maybe they don't want to have to keep hold of it and have you rocking up to fetch it.

Alternatively, leave some large SAE with the new owners?

Yes. Otherwise everything will go in the bin. Your new owners won’t want you dropping by for months

Or don’t give the new owners a job to do and just redirect.

Yes. Always redirect. It's your responsibility to sort your own mail. Or just ensure you log on and update everywhere that you can think of that might send mail.

Yes, do it. So much easier and avoids having to have contact with your buyers if anything goes wrong!

No, just make a list of all companies that would send you post eg bank, insurance etc and just inform them of your new address.

Our sellers didn’t set one up, they came round a couple of times to collect their mail (there was a LOT of it). They refused to give us any contact details to let them know when more arrived and stopped coming after about 6 months. At one point the pile of letters and catalogues was over a foot high, at which point I binned it all.

We’ve been here 12 years and still get occasional letters which look important from the Italian consulate. We started off returning to sender, but they still arrive. They now go in the bin.

Absolutely. Because when you buy something off eBay for the first time in years, and then panic because you've realised it's been sent to your old house, you'll actually get it. 😳

What difference would being close by make? Do you mean you will periodically be popping back to fetch any post, in which case, yes you should absolutely redirect.

You don't have to have 12 months, just do a 3 or 6 months and see if anything comes.

Yes. Previous owners didn’t as moved down the road. She turned up 4/5 times and the post was collecting in piles. Made me so cross.

Then she had the cheek to ask me to pop it through on school run. After that I marked them return to sender, walked past her house to the letterbox.

She turned up one day and asked for her post. Told her I was returning to sender and didn’t want her knocking on my front door again. Haven’t heard from her since.

I tried and tried to set up and pay for redirect but it just wouldn't work. Apparently very common with a name like Victoria, Vicky, Tori etc. where I just couldn't guess which version of my name they wanted. In the end I contacted everybody I could think of and our buyer has kindly text us about two letters that arrived that for me (both from banks alerting me at my old address that the address had been changed!). He just leaves them in the porch and texts me, DP goes to collect it. (I can't face visiting yet). I feel pretty ok about it after realising we hadn't had any post in weeks before moving.

Yes paynfor redirection,the people we brought off did not and just expected to turn up when they wanted to collect. If we were not in they left snotty notes through the door telling us we were denying them there post. From that day everything was either returned to sender or saved up and posted to them without a stamp ( we know there address) oddly we did not receive much after that

I moved 3 doors down and redirected mine. I have the most amazing postie who regularly gets mail to me when misaddressed as there are two ways to write my address. He was most put out that I had done it as he works every day apart from Wednesday and has been the postie here for 7 years. He knocked one day to ask if he had to put the redirect stickers on or if I was ok without them. I now regret paying but I am exceptionally lucky.

Yep I moved less than half a mile away last year but got mail redirection for six months. That was long enough to cancel stuff. I have still had a few parcels delivered to my old address - normally the site saving my old address and me not noticing in time. Luckily we are on reasonable terms with the people we sold to so they have texted me when this has happened and we can nip over and collect things.

Depends how much you want any mail from your old house. Fine if your happy to walk away and not worry about it not fine if your going to keep popping in to the old house and asking the new person for it.

How much is your house move costing you in stamp duty, surveys, conveyancing, mortgage fees?? An extra £100+ is nominal .
