If you have a utility room…

How big is it? And what do you have in it? What do you wish you could have in it?

didntlikeanyofthesuggestions · 28/09/2025 20:30

Essentials are washing machine, tumble drier, sink. I would like more space to dry clothes and more storage for boots (or a separate boot room if we're really dreaming big).

PragmaticIsh · 28/09/2025 20:38

We have washer, dryer, sink, storage cupboards for cleaning products/iron/vases and for mop and ironing board. Would love ceiling height for a heated Sheila's maid and space for a dog washing station.

choccychipcookies1988 · 28/09/2025 20:38

Yes we do - it’s just a gully utility behind the garage. Quite slim. But has washer, dryer, 1 x cupboard and a worktop. It’s basically our laundry room and I love it. We have room to put up a clothes airer too in winter. We are in London and so many houses here have laundry in the front room etc which I can’t deal with. We debated not having one and instead making our open plan kitchen / diner / snug slightly bigger but so glad we put in the utility. Hope that helps x

AllJoyAndNoFun · 28/09/2025 20:40

It’s quite big but does house the water tank (400l) and an accumulator so that takes up a fair bit of space. Also washer and drier ( stacked) some cupboards for cleaning stuff, a sink and then a “boot room”bit with storage for coats and shoes. Also gor one of those drying things that you hoist up to the ceiling

StrawberryThief1930 · 28/09/2025 21:16

ours is quite skinny so a bit like a galley kitchen - a row of fridge, washing machine, cupboard with all the cleaning stuff. Then a work top with airfryer, bread maker etc. its very small!

id like an actual room with a sink and space to dry washing, ironing board space, cupboards for wellies & coats, a window for ventilation too. a towel radiator for drying bits and bobs during the winter eg wet school coats etc. space for the dog bed.

BCBird · 28/09/2025 21:19

Mine is a bit scabby to be honest but as it houses washing machine, fridge freezer and tumble dryer it is quite handy. Originally I stupidly had washing machine in kitchen and dishwasher in the utility.

Eyesopenwideawake · 28/09/2025 21:23

Ours is bigger than the actual kitchen! Wall and floor units (recycled from the old kitchen) for dry/tinned foods, huge fridge and freezer, washer and all the stuff that doesn't need to be in the main kitchen – sous vide, deep fat fryer, pressure cooker. The dogs chill out in there in the summer.

Lifebeganat50 · 28/09/2025 21:24

I’m very fortunate in that mine is large for a utility, about 4m x 3m. It has the Boiler, washing machine, dryer, ceiling pulley, dehumidifier, sink, 3 x base cupboards, fridge freezer, 2 x full height cupboards and a “flying” cupboard over the fridge, between the full height cupboards

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 28/09/2025 21:29

Ours has a washing machine, tumble dryer and sink along one wall with floor to ceiling cupboards on the opposite wall.

The cupboards hold our coats and boots plus shelving with pet food, spare light bulbs, basic DIY stuff, first aid stuff.

It's a narrow room so no space for drying clothes etc. Id love that but it's not possible with the space we've got

RandomUsernameHere · 28/09/2025 21:30

Washing machine, tumble dryer, full height freezer, dishwasher, large sink, worktop, cupboards and drawers including one containing the boiler.

loobylou10 · 28/09/2025 21:32

Love mine. We have a run of worktop with washer, dryer, cleaning cupboard. Then a large fridge and freezer at the end. Shelves above the worktop with store cupboard tins, large packs of pasta, rice etc. A heated aider, coatrack, pet food stocks and all cleaning equipment. It’s a room I couldn’t do without.

clarrylove · 28/09/2025 21:33

Boiler in a cupboard with hoover etc. Massive shoe storage area. Have sniffing mirror doors covering this. 1.5 sink over cupboards, washing machine, coat rack and ..... ceiling pulley airer!

unsync · 28/09/2025 21:33

Ours is the width of the house, so going in a circle. Back door, recycling units, tumble dryer, sink, washing machine, cupboard, door to garage, double base cupboard and wall unit, tall larder cupboard for cleaning stuff, window to front, airing cupboard, boiler and immersion tank cupboard, coat hanging, big space where radiator is that I've got random boxes in before they go out into garage and door into kitchen.

SquigglePigs · 28/09/2025 21:35

We have a super tiny one at the mo but it has the washing machine, tumble dryer and an under counter freezer plus a sideboard over the top we can fold laundry/store stuff on and a couple of overhead cupboards for storage. But it's better then nothing because I can close the door on the machine noises and we get an overflow freezer!

fairislecable · 28/09/2025 21:35

Large floor standing oil boiler, washing machine, tumble dryer then a very large deep sink and drainer with cupboard underneath. Also a large wall cupboard to house cake tins and cleaning products.

The best thing we have done is fit a deep shelf over the door to store the large cast iron casseroles.

The remaining wall space we have 3 IKEA Tjusig wall racks to hang washing which dries using the heat given off by the boiler.

It is not beautiful but is so functional and makes family life so much easier.

BrunchBarBandit · 28/09/2025 21:42

Our utility room is about 6x6ft and has the second fridge freezer, 2 big shelving racks for larder -type foods, coat hooks and vacuum, mop&bucket etc. We have a separate laundry room (6x12ft) off that with washer and dryer, cupboards, shelves etc plus a Victorian hanging rack, a heated clothes horse and a standard maiden. I’ve also got a small freezer out there.

WantingMoreCareer · 28/09/2025 21:44

Washer and dryer (stacked). Cupboard and drawers for cleaning products and dog leads etc.

small coat/boot area. On the wall air dryer/rack thing.

leading off it we have a loo and shower room.

if I could magic something I’d have huge floor to ceiling cupboard for hoovers/mps etc. room for an old sofa for the dogs and a bigger boot/coat space.

oh and I have not had a large metal sink with drainer - I’d have gone for undermount sink and more worktop space.

Ilovegolf · 28/09/2025 21:47

Current utility is 12ft by 20ft but we don’t use even half of it. Moving house and new utility is 12ft by 10ft, even though house is bigger overall. New utility will have washer, drier, sink, washer pulley for drying, secondary dishwasher, tall cupboards for ironing board, mop and bucket etc, plus laundry shoot for master bedroom (literally directly above so simple to install).
Bootroom and dog stuff in different rooms.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 28/09/2025 21:48

Mine contains washing machine, belfast sink, lots of cupboards on floor and wall, and a dishwasher. I wish the dishwasher was in the kitchen, as DH lobs used mugs & glasses into the kitchen sink instead of putting them in the dishwasher! I won't make that mistake again!

Gingercar · 28/09/2025 21:48

We have two houses, in one the utility is a decent size and has a fridge freezer, a tall 6 draw freezer, a wine fridge, a washing machine, the boiler (oil one, so bigger than your usual gas boiler). Cat litter tray and cat bed on work surfaces. One of those pulley clothes dryers, which dries clothes so quickly due to the boiler always being warm. Loads of room for boots and coats (which also dry well). We never got round to putting the sink in.

The house we have just moved to has a pretty small kitchen for the size of the house, but we have converted the single, downstairs bedroom into a laundry room with sink, washing machine and space for a tumble dryer if we want one. There is also a small utility/storeroom by the kitchen that we have two filing cabinets, a big heavy duty shelf unit that has all the cans and bottles of stock for my cafe. It also has a row of kitchen units. Again no sink fitted. Not sure if we will. There’s room for boots, but the entry next to it has lots of room too.

InterestPiqued · 28/09/2025 21:53

Ours is tiny, but we manage to fit in the washer, dryer, a small extra dishwasher, microwave, air fryer, stick vacuum cleaner and charger, coat and bag racks, shelves for a gazillion vases, tubs with Christmas crockery, all the big bowls and serving platters for ‘occasions’, all the shopping bags, tea towels, cleaning cloths, dog leads and paraphernalia - so much stuff.

24Dogcuddler · 28/09/2025 21:59

Just downsized but our utility was half of the integral garage. Made into a room when we did the kitchen.
It had a worktop with 3 large cupboards above. Under counter freezer, washer and drier. Opposite was a tall fridge freezer, beer fridge and a coat and shoe stand.
Didn’t have a sink would have liked one. Work surface was a cheaper one so used for any food likely to stain ( anything wiped off) or craft activities.

Chasingsquirrels · 28/09/2025 22:02

Approx 3.5m x 1.5m

Fridge-freezer
Tumble drier
Washing machine
Sink unit
Boiler

Cupboards above

Door to outside

Opposite wall has door to kitchen opposite sink.

It does the job, ideally it would have room for clothes airers & the dog bed.

PersephoneParlormaid · 28/09/2025 22:04

I’ve got a double drainer sink, the boiler, a full height cupboard, and the washer/dryer.

Blingismything · 28/09/2025 22:24

Floor to ceiling cupboards with cleaning paraphernalia, vases, ironing equipment. sink with shelves above, washing machine, tumble dryer, shoe cupboard, coat hooks, American style fridge freezer. It is fairly large as it was the original kitchen before the house was extended.
