If you have a utility room…

How big is it? And what do you have in it? What do you wish you could have in it?

Gotcha, well if you post an existing floorplan we may have ideas (I love a floorplan challenge)

JDM625 · 01/10/2025 16:52

Ahh, so you really are wanting ideas for yours. I already posted upthread but some things to think about.

-Our utility sink has a tap with a hose on it. Its very handy for washing the dog. She is small enough to be plonked inside the sink though. Also great for washing off shoes etc.
-Till we recently renovated, I'd never heard the term 'appliance garage'. We are still installing cupboards, but if I can, I really want a deep/tall appliance garage for slow cooker, pressure cooker and ALL those appliances that I can't fit in the kitchen
-I wish I could have stacked my washer/dryer. Or, at the very least, raised the washing machine up on a plinth so I'm not bending down every time. You can buy plinths with drawers in them too
-Depending on your house layout, consider a laundry shoot from upstairs. A cousin has one. She can open a little door in her upstairs hall and its directly above a large basket in her utility. They can put clothes, smaller bedding etc through the slot
-She also had a fold down clothes rack. This isn't hers, because hers fold flat against the wall, but its similar https://www.argos.co.uk/product/4330154?utm_custom6=LIA&utm_source=google&utm_medium=free_listing&utm_campaign=merchant_center&deeplink=true

Totally reccommend a Shelias made. I also liek to use it for the bulky gadgets that aren't used everyday eg Stand Mixer, Microwave, Juicer. They are easily accessible and out, but not cluttering up the kitchen.

Dutchhouse14 · 01/10/2025 17:45

We have a very narrow one, too narrow really if fridge or freezer door is open no one can get past!
We have a washing machine, tumble dryer, tall cupboard that isn't big enough for everything I'd like to put in there, a fridge and a freezer.
I'd like it to be wider/ bigger, have a sink and more cupboard space but I'm grateful we have it!

Just newly created a small one but I love it! It houses the stacked washing machine and dryer, the water softener , boiler, mops and laundry stuff. There’s also space for a clothes aired, which is the main benefit as I hated seeing it in various rooms and I only use the dryer sparingly. I’m going to add shelves and things later but for now I love the space.

Champere · 03/10/2025 18:40

We are just planning ours. We have space for washer and dryer to be side by side; but should we stack them instead? I’m a bit worried about doing it!

Meadowfinch · 03/10/2025 18:43

10' x 6'

A row of cupboards, with worktop under the window. Washing machine, central heating boiler, ironing board, airer. Bread maker. Battery charger.

Back door to the garden.

I just don’t like bending down more than I have to🤣. Always put the dryer on top and box them in with kitchen units or put the dryer on the worktop and the WM under it, as otherwise you have to use a stacking kit with a strap to stop the TD falling off that looks a bit shit. But I’m a massive convert having done side by side for years

MNLurker1345 · 05/10/2025 14:59

I have full kitchen cupboards and draws, sink, washing machine, clothes baskets, loo, shower, clothes rack, vacuum cleaner, carpet cleaner, ironing board - always standing, DIY stuff.

We bought it like this. It’s smaller than it sounds, just well designed. I love my utility room.

My SIL calls it my woman cave.

We have washer dryer (1 machine) that works well for us. I definitely want to be able to
use the space above as closed cupboard rather than worktop.

Would love more drying space , and a Sheila thing, but it’s small and has 4 doors and one window. So really difficult to manage!

Oldraver · 05/10/2025 17:33

Washer, small space for trolley with detergents (literally 30cm wide) 60cm cupboard with sink over, tumble dryer. Beer fridge above dryer, wall units

So very tight, would love to have a much bigger one. Contemplating putting up a rail to dry clothes on

MeridaBrave · 05/10/2025 17:43

We do. It has some storage cupboard, a fridge freezer. Worksurface with a sink, and a washing machine and tumble dryer, underneath. Enough space to hang up some laundry on a rack.

I would love a sink especially as DS 9 has a penchant to wash his football boots in the kitchen sink!

In the meantime just get a Boot Buddy! They're great

AnotherEmma · 05/10/2025 18:28

We're planning to convert part of our garage into a utility room. I want to use it as a laundry room, mainly, and retain the door to the garden for easy access to hang laundry outside in dry weather. It will have our washer/drier and a sink, and space to hang laundry - preferably a ceiling or wall-mounted airer. Plus a space to store the ironing board (which doesn't have a good spot atm).

If we can fit it in, I'd like some space for a covered litter tray somewhere under a counter top. My cat goes outdoors but we do need a litter tray just in case (if we have to keep him in for any reason).

Storage for cleaning products would be a bonus. We don't need storage for other stuff, we will retain part of the garage and have the loft.

Approx 3.5m x 1.5m

Fridge-freezer
Tumble drier
Washing machine
Sink unit
Boiler

Cupboards above

Door to outside

Opposite wall has door to kitchen opposite sink.

It does the job, ideally it would have room for clothes airers & the dog bed.

Amazing.

I’ve been drawing things out, and am wondering if there is any benefit to having a utility area without a door…so 3 walls attached to the kitchen. The first annoyance springs to mind is hearing the washing machine…back to the drawing board.

Our cat is similar. In this extension project we can’t touch the garage. Plus the would be nicer as a room rather than as a utility as south facing.

We have the washing machine, tumble dryer, a sink, worktops with 1 double and 1 single wall unit and 4 low level cupboards as well as a large built in cupboard where I put the mops, vacuums, carpet washer and other stuff
We have the dehumidifier in there and can fit 3 clothes horses so it’s large enough for that but I wish it was a bit bigger. The one in my last house actually bigger but the house was a lot smaller.
We have a cupboard in the lobby area which leads to the utility which helps for storage. If I was redoing it it I’d have washing machine and dryer ontop of each other to make space for more cupboards and a slightly smaller sink. But overall I’m happy enough with it
