If you have a utility room…

How big is it? And what do you have in it? What do you wish you could have in it?

Ours has boiler, washing machine, tumble, fridge freezer and a cupboard for coats and shoes. Also have a shoe rack but I’d still like more shoe storage but I’ve run out of space. There’s a cupboard above the dryer which I use for shoving crap in.

Oh wow so many responses. Thank you so much. We’re in London and planning a kitchen extension with a utility room so lots of ideas to take on board.

We’ve got a washer, drier, all the pet stuff including where they eat. Quite a bit of storage for back stock of kitchen items and a nice high up cupboard for all our medication etc. I feel it was really overlooked to not put a sink in there and I would also like the addition of a tall cupboard for hoover/broom/mop/ironing board. I’d like to add an iron holder on the wall and a pull out line for hanging any delicate washing up to dry.

I would love a sink especially as DS 9 has a penchant to wash his football boots in the kitchen sink!

Boiler, washing machine, tumble dryer, sink, run of fitted cabinets with workspace, for dog food and dog stuff generally, cleaning products, kids craft stuff so they can't paint at will and then a "long hang" cupboard for vacuum, mop etc...
Keep the air fryer and coffee machine on the work surface in there as I don't like clutter on kitchen surfaces.
My favourite room in the house and the smallest 😂

mugglewump · 29/09/2025 18:48

Ours is a utility and cloakroom combined. It houses the washer, the dryer, a drying rack, the boiler, a washbasin and toilet. We also keep some shoes in there, the Xmas decs, my sewing stuff, the iron and ironing board, the vaccuum cleaner and mops etc.

Onefortheroad25 · 29/09/2025 18:55

Not sure how big mine is. You come in the back door into it. 2 windows. Washer, dryer and Belfast sink. Double press under sink and 2 pull outs either side of washer & dryer. Wall presses either side of window over sink.
We have a low bench with a drawer that houses dog/cat food etc. Also have long press for mop/sweeping brush etc.
Dog bed too. I love my utility room and put a lot of thought into it, probably more than my kitchen!

TheeNotoriousPIG · 29/09/2025 18:56

Mine is probably about 5ft wide, and maybe 7/8ft long, with three doors leading off it, and they take up a lot of space! I can just about squeeze a washing machine, drier and a slim fridge in it (because the galley kitchen is too small to house it).

I'd love to have an American-style fridge freezer, or even just a chest freezer, but don't have the space for either!

MeganM3 · 29/09/2025 19:09

I have reasonably big one. It is 4m x 4m and to be honest quite unnecessary, it used to be a smallish kitchen. Only use it for the laundry now.

I have a washer, dryer, sink, a couple of kitchen units base and wall units. Then drying racks. And a big laundry basket full of clothes.
I find it becomes a total dumping ground for paint tins, bike helmets, picnic blanket, back up dining chairs.

Quoting by mistake

Ours is the back of the garage converted. I LOVE having a utility room. We have washing machine, boiler, tumble dryer and a chest freezer in there and loads of storage. Ours is accessed off the kitchen and I love being able to close the door on any mess out there.

BadActingParsley · 01/10/2025 06:48

We don’t use the sink much but it’s so useful for the occasions we do use it ….

TeapotTallulah · 01/10/2025 06:53

Mine’s quite small so I had the sink taken out to make room for a full sized cupboard. So now I have washing machine, cupboard, boiler, a gazillion coat hooks and my pulley airer (which I genuinely couldn’t live without). I got rid of my tumble drier as I never used it.

greengreyblue · 01/10/2025 06:56

Yes and I wouldn’t want to be without it. Mine is on the back of the garage and connects to the kitchen . It’s a decent space with a vaulted roof and skylight. It’s about 2.5m x 2m and incorporates a downstairs loo( separate door), washing machine with worktop over, shelves above and sink in worktop. Under the sink I have two baskets of ironing behind a pretty curtain I made. I have space for clothes dryer and I have the dog bowls out there I also have a high, retractable washing line that goes across the ceiling. My ironing board is on a bracket on the wall. Also have a big coat rack in there for dog walking coats etc. It was originally a lean-to with old glass roof and outside loo but we converted it years ago. There is also a door to the garden so this is the messy entrance as it’s hard tiled.

AnonKat · 01/10/2025 08:12

I do. I have a washer dryer and cupboards. Its a pointless room. I wish it was bigger to have my airers in there.

Kitchenbattle · 01/10/2025 08:22

Ours is tiny it’s the one part of the house that I would like to be a bit bigger but anyway it has enough space for the things we need. Behind the door is the air to water boiler system which is quite big because it’s a five bed three story house. I also have the clothes airer, the ironing board and other taller objects behind the door.

I have one at either end of the house. One is mainly a laundry room with washing machine, dryer, sink and several cupboards. The other is more of a boot room but still has a washing machine and sink. I split this room into two with the plan of adding a downstairs bathroom but it’s just another storeroom at the moment.

SunnyViper · 01/10/2025 08:56

This is the one in the old farmhouse and is more of a boot room but has a really useful deep sink. The door leads to the storage room which will eventually become a downstairs bathroom. The boiler is in this room too.

This is the other end of the house and is the main utility. Currently used as a dumping ground😂

A bit tight as there are 3 doors. Back door, loo door, kitchen door (which any buyer with half a brain woukd have put in a pocket door). We have washer and dryer with sink and under cupboard. Fitted Boiler cupboard + 2 eye level cupboards.
Previous house was literally a cupboard with a washer abd dryer on top ... loved it just as much.

GOODCAT · 01/10/2025 09:18

Growing up had a huge one with sink, washing machine, tumble dryer, chest freezer, a chick hatching area and enough room for boots, coats and a decent length of washing line plus boiler.

Sadly not had that since, currently house washing machine in a shed outside and the best bit of our current home is what was a very narrow pantry but now houses boots and coats plus torches and chargers.

deeahgwitch · 01/10/2025 09:19

It is half the size of a normal garage. Has a washing machine and a dryer. I have a Sheila Maid and 3 winged clothes airers. It also has 3 bikes and various old cans of paints, seeds and bulbs etc.
It has a working radiator.
When we bought the house it was there and is a great size but the floor and walls need updating.
It has both internal and external access. .
I think it’s a great addition to the house.

Justploddingonandon · 01/10/2025 09:23

Mine is 8ftx8ft and has boiler, washer, drier and large fridge in. We also keep the cleaning stuff and small outdoor toys there, but would love to put in some kind of storage. However it's on a corner and has doors on three walls (one to outside) so there's nowhere to put any.

Rookie93 · 01/10/2025 09:31

Ours is 2m x 1.5m so small. Like others have stacked washer and drier, with a sink and some shelves over the sink for a pantry along one wall. The cupboard under the sink has the cleaning stuff. There's also a small bottle fridge, which is great as it helps keep the main fridge clear, and a floor to ceiling cupboard for brooms, mops & Christmas tat. One wall has some hooks for the ironing board & a clothes airer, dog leads etc. Reused old kitchen units when we built an extension. It also has a sliding door to leave more floor space as it is small. Can't hear the washing machine when on and definitely keeps the main kitchen clearer.

Post a floorplan??

I haven’t even had it built yet! Planning a rear extension under permitted development (3m) and trying to work out how to include a downstairs bathroom and utility into the kitchen area.
