A haunted house - is this a bonus?!

i absolutely love this house but it’s not to everyone’s taste. It is situated in the area I grew up and was always known as the haunted house. The estate agent blurb advertises that it’s been featured on ‘Most Haunted’ - set me wondering if this would be seen by potential buyers as a positive or more likely to put them off. A quick google reveals ghosts and a poltergeist!

If I had the money I would love to buy that house but, I have to admit, it might put me off even though I don’t really believe in the supernatural ( unless I’m on my own in the middle of the night 😂).

love to know others opinions - would it put you off?

I'd buy it if I wanted to live there. I'd just turn the radio up loud so i can't hear them.

CharlotteLightandDark · 22/08/2025 14:42

It’s absolutely gorgeous, exactly my sort of house but yes it would put me off!

ScholesPanda · 22/08/2025 14:46

It would put me off.

There was a woman where I grew up who bought a supposedly haunted house, she really embroidered it as well. Makes a fortune with ghost tours, seances, books, TV appearances etc. so it could appeal to someone who sees it as a business opportunity.

GhislaineDeFeligondeRose · 22/08/2025 14:46

I think it would put me off a bit. I'm not really woo, but I can imagine getting scared in the middle of the night, especially living on my own and with no other houses around. You might get ghost hunters hanging round too

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 22/08/2025 14:49

Not at all! When I bought my house (very old cottage), I asked the man who lived there if there was a ghost. He just gave me an awkward grin and said 'don't think so...'

I'm as woo as a house brick, but I'd love some inexplicable things to happen around me (not occasioned by wind, creaky floorboards, dog, random shit happening, etc).

GasPanic · 22/08/2025 14:53

I think it would put some people off. And other people would love it.

However if it is famous as a haunted house then probably not a good idea to try to hide it from any prospective buyers - probably better to sell it to someone who was happy with that rather than someone who wasn't.

Yes, I'd be all for it. We are currently living in a Victorian house where a famous historical murder took place on the first floor landing outside DS's bedroom, but nary a phantom bloodstain nor the groan of a trapped soul have featured in the almost five years we've owned it, rather disappointingly. Not so much as an inexplicably creaky floorboard.

Plantatreetoday · 22/08/2025 15:16

We’re in a 14/15th c Hall house ( so formerly a Lords court house ) and I’m sure the dogs found ghosts. I rely on all the witches marks to keep us safe
but am still hopeful of one day finding the supposed priests holes and maybe even a wand.
I live in hope

Meanwhile the dog growling at random walls has just become a part of life.

Id buy this. It’s lovely

JimmyGiraffe · 22/08/2025 15:19

I could only live there if I was NEVER home alone!

HaddockDiem · 22/08/2025 15:37

@GasPanic yeh you’re quite right - tell them up front so they don’t pull out of the sale when they find out. @JimmyGiraffe my thoughts exactly- beautiful house and stunning gardens but I’de have to sleep under the bed covers with the dog if I was alone!!

I’ve always wanted a house ghost! I’d be there like a shot!

ginasevern · 22/08/2025 15:39

Yes, it would put me off but it is a bloody gorgeous house. Is the "haunting" activity around the staircase area do you know?

God, I'd adore a priest's hole. And a haha.

Timelineuk · 22/08/2025 15:46

My dream home but sadly even up north I can’t afford it!

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 22/08/2025 15:48

Nah, I dont believe in ghosts. Wouldnt bother me at all.
I'd be happy if it was cheaper because other people did though.

Timelineuk · 22/08/2025 15:49

Ita like something out of the conjuring! Even the garden. I totally love it.

Stayed at Landmark Trusts Goddards and myself and a few friends all fell down the haha in the garden one night after a few wines.

It really was a
hahaha moment 🤣

I was brought up in a thatched house built in about 1500. We had ghosts who moved things around. I remember one evening my brother & me had been sent to lay the table for dinner which we did. When we came back to the room the table was in disarray with the cloth & all knives & forks wrapped up in the middle of the table. We would hear footsteps upstairs when everyone was downstairs. My mother would call up the stairs to whoever was making that noise to stop it. I remember an old lady tucking me in at night & singing - I could sing you the song that she sang I remember it so clearly.

I was never frightened, I felt that all the ghosts were friendly.

I'd definitely buy this house.

civetcat · 22/08/2025 16:01

If you're worried, find out what type of ghostly activity has occurred and if the thought of this happening would put you off. Even if you never heard/saw/sensed anything, would you remain so anxious living in the house you could never relax/enjoy being there? Or do you like the idea of a house ghost/think it's a load of rubbish? Gorgeous house btw.

Totally agree. My dream home. Unfortunately I live in the SW &, as I understand, Yorkshire doesn't have the lovely climate that we enjoy on the East coast of Devon.

It's also rather too large for DH & me on our own & far too expensive 😂

Catsandcannedbeans · 22/08/2025 16:09

My childhood home was haunted. That ghost got the shit end of the stick being trapped for eternity on a council estate.

LikeStrawberriesAndCream · 22/08/2025 16:10

That house is amazing - and for that price! You wouldn't get anything like that in the south east.
I'd buy it as long as I didn't get bad vibes on entering it - and I'd have to watch the Most Haunted episode first! Unfortunately I can't move to Yorkshire...

HaddockDiem · 22/08/2025 16:10

@ginasevern yes spot on - the ‘unseen presence’ and temperature drops but there are other phenomena around the house. A friendly but shy child ghost in the sitting room ( used to be a convent then a school) and a rather annoying poltergeist…

A 4-bed new build costs that much round here.

Would I buy that house? No, I don't think so. Do I think it has - er - long term residents? The hairs on the back of my neck say so.

Bathingforest · 22/08/2025 16:24

This is interesting, we used to inhabit the same plot of land for the last 500 years where I'm coming from, no ghost stories. We just pull down the old houses and build new modern ones, cheaper than restoring ....so do ghost exist in the west only in houses where your previous house owner actually wasn't your blood relative and hates you
