A haunted house - is this a bonus?!

i absolutely love this house but it’s not to everyone’s taste. It is situated in the area I grew up and was always known as the haunted house. The estate agent blurb advertises that it’s been featured on ‘Most Haunted’ - set me wondering if this would be seen by potential buyers as a positive or more likely to put them off. A quick google reveals ghosts and a poltergeist!

If I had the money I would love to buy that house but, I have to admit, it might put me off even though I don’t really believe in the supernatural ( unless I’m on my own in the middle of the night 😂).

love to know others opinions - would it put you off?

Also another story, I've heard about ghosts but never heard stories of people actually claiming they've seen them. Once took my grandchild to a play date to a mum who lived in a 400 year old cottage, jokingly asked do they have a ghost and she froze. Apparently they didn't have a ghost but her child had phobia of them. So the invites for playdsyes stopped. Oh dear

YanTanTetheraPetheraBumfitt · 22/08/2025 16:31

It would put me right off.

Geneticsbunny · 22/08/2025 16:31

The thing which would put me off is that they have obviously added some walls and extra bathrooms and I would want to see the listed building consent for all the work before buying because now they pica are up online, planning oculd make the next owner take them all down if they shouldn't be there.

PringlesTube · 22/08/2025 16:32

Wouldn’t put me off, the opposite in fact. I wish I could afford it 😂

@ginasevern yes spot on - the ‘unseen presence’ and temperature drops but there are other phenomena around the house. A friendly but shy child ghost in the sitting room ( used to be a convent then a school) and a rather annoying poltergeist…

I'd just googled and found that. Nope from me - it has a poltergeist!!!!

You can check all the Listed building consents on the local planning portal

@YanTanTetheraPetheraBumfitt Holy shit that video! I always say I’ll believe in ghosts when I see one but still, I would be scared there on a night or even on my own. Absolutely beautiful house, in a remote part of East Yorkshire hence the price is low even for ooop North.

This is interesting, we used to inhabit the same plot of land for the last 500 years where I'm coming from, no ghost stories. We just pull down the old houses and build new modern ones, cheaper than restoring ....so do ghost exist in the west only in houses where your previous house owner actually wasn't your blood relative and hates you

Sorry, come again?

What you’re saying is probably interesting but I don’t understand it. Might be I’m tired though…

Platypusdiver · 22/08/2025 16:57

I rely on all the witches marks to keep us safe

What does this mean?!!

KiwiFall · 22/08/2025 17:00

It would put me off but I grew up in a haunted house, even now when I visit I hate being in certain rooms myself.

I've never heard of ghost stories in houses where the same family lived...

Old houses have witches marks on chimneys and doorways
They were put there to protect the houses from witches coming down chimneys and through doors

In Guernsey they have witches seats next to chimneys. the witches then can take a seat next to the chimney outside so they don’t come down the chimney into the house

We don’t have a seat and we’re in England. We have the marks

RaininSummer · 22/08/2025 17:09

I wouldn't buy it in case it really is haunted.

RosaMoline · 22/08/2025 17:19

It’s beautiful, and I’d live there, no issues.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 22/08/2025 17:31

JimmyGiraffe · 22/08/2025 15:19

I could only live there if I was NEVER home alone!

But that's the beauty of it ....even if it was just you in the house you wouldn't actually BE alone ..... mwah ha ha Grin

Thanks for the link, that's interesting. Looking at the photos I "felt" there was definitely something around the stairway.

Plantatreetoday · 22/08/2025 17:46

In terms of the video. I see nothing other than some guys making a lot of money with some bleeping equipment
😗

Glitchymn1 · 22/08/2025 17:57

Have they got B&M style plastic plant squares over the tub? That’s ’haunting’ enough for me.
It just looks cold to me- I wouldn’t want it, not that there’s any danger lol .

Londonmummy66 · 22/08/2025 18:21

Its very pretty but the floorplans suggest a very difficult layout - especially between bedrooms and bathrooms. That would put me off a lot more than a potential ghost.

rainbowunicorn22 · 22/08/2025 18:21

As long as they left me alone, I would not mind! Though to be honest, its not my kind of house, even though it's nice and big

The plans are wrong
Unless some bedrooms are for ghosts as walking through walls is the only way you’d get into them

LlamaNoDrama · 22/08/2025 21:43

It would definitely put me off! But it looks like the current owners have been there a while so they can't be too bothered? Are they doors on those stairs? Where do they lead too I can't work it out from the plan.

CheeseWisely · 22/08/2025 21:50

Having lived in a house where lots of inexplicable and frightening stuff went on, absolutely not in a million years, even if they were paying me to live there.

I think that you can actually get into every room but some of the bedrooms are accessed through a bathroom (and one of the bathrooms is accessed through an ensuite. Also the main bedroom has to use bedroom 2 as a dressing room otherwise it can only access a bathroom via bedroom 2 which would be tricky. I don't know if the awkward layout was done as it was the cheapest way to do things - ie remedial if you can chuck money at the problem or dictated by listed building requirements - ie can't be changed. That would really put me off either way (speaking as someone who has already had to negotiate the latter).
