Windows. UPVC or wood?

Swedes · 18/03/2008 10:59

Our windows are all currently UPVC - which I don't really like. Our rear windows need replacing and I want to change to wood. I know UPVC is maintenance free. What would you do?

tho actually, I do get the grao- bit. Gr- ow -inds. But all those vowels in a row just threw me.

Quattrocento · 19/03/2008 23:42

I still say Swedes that you are too young and too beautiful to do this to yourself ... Wait until you have false teeth.

Swedes · 19/03/2008 23:42

Onebat - Are you from the North? How quaint. Sorry I should have thought and translated for you.

Quattro - How old are you? Where do you live in the country?

Slur, we are being quite rude - will that persuade you?

I think I need to know what Van Dals are now - are they like Crocs?

onebatmother · 19/03/2008 23:44

I dunno, Q. like cojones, maybe?
I say again, it was all those vowels what threw e.
""Dount you have graoinds?"

Quattrocento · 19/03/2008 23:46

I am 41 and I think I live quite close to you ...

Is that relevant?

MonkeybirdisboredWITHbuns · 19/03/2008 23:46

Swedes is collecting names and addresses now so she can take out a contract on ALL THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE GOOD TASTE.

IorekByrnison · 19/03/2008 23:48

Glad you enjoyed Mr Iorek's post Swedes. I am very proud of him. Don't you love the way he punctuates Mr.?

But back to the matter in hand: the daylight issue must surely concern you a little? And the irreplaceable moving parts. You see the wood argument is not all about aesthetics, it is about convenience too.

Anyway, that is my last word. Only you know the answer.

Swedes · 19/03/2008 23:48

New shoes anyone? It's enough to make me want to get hitched. Will you help me find the old lady wedding dress to match?

You know what you were worrying about Swedes? Not windows, I mean lucidity in old age. I don't think you need to worry about that.

MonkeybirdisboredWITHbuns · 19/03/2008 23:50

oh yes, those are the uPVC of shoes. You'll be needing some stretchers and bunion pads to go with them.

Swedes · 19/03/2008 23:52

Just wondering if you are 26 and not yet tired of life's quest. Or reside in a mellow Cotswold stone house where uPVC would be unthinkable.

onebatmother · 19/03/2008 23:52

Oh Swedes are we being rude, as monkeybird says? I hope not.

Swedes · 19/03/2008 23:56

I live in Joan Hunter Dunn avenue. Harpenden residents think Philippe Starck must work for Lehmann Brothers but wonder why he's never joined the tennis club.

I'm gonna own up now... Before I moved to my lovely new house, I moved from a draughty Victorian one with ancient crappy sash windows. To a Seventies monstrosity with a loft conversion and uPVC at all angles.

God we loved it. The quiet! The warmth! The lack of worrying about the outside!

But I still wouldn't put it in.

Being unrude now: you'll do it because you want to, not because you're old, because I'm old and I wouldn't. Who wants to listen to a bunch of cackling old bigots anyway?

MonkeybirdisboredWITHbuns · 19/03/2008 23:58

nominating Swedes for quote of the week.

[please tell me there is a real JHD Avenue, please]

Swedes · 19/03/2008 23:58

Onebat - LOL - You are all quite right. I agree with all of you.

Oh good. Sleep tight my dear (in your healthy draught, for soon you will wake with an habitual hermetic headache..)

well swedes??? what did you do???

brettgirl2 · 09/03/2009 08:21

Haha, how funny this thread is.

Personally I am a lightness freak and can't stand those dark wooden windows. (I wouldn't buy a house with them in lol). I know that you can paint wood white - but really there is no point.

Pannacotta · 09/03/2009 08:31

Wood every time.
Looks so much better, laods better for the environment, good for house value/re-sale and you can maintain it unliek upvc.
Shop around for the best deals, you might strike lucky in times like this...Worth asking local joiners to quote btw, they are often much cheaper than "window" companies.

MerryPonymum · 09/03/2009 08:36

I'm no doubt going against the grain here but I lived for 20 years in an old Tudor farmhouse with 37 rotting wooden windows we couldn't afford to replace. Muggins here had to slap paint on them constantly just to hold them up. Every time I got to the last one it was time to start again with the first. Even painted while I was PG - I laid down my brush and gave birth with paintstains on my fingers.

Moved to a new house with no Tudor fireplace, no 500-year-old ship's timber beams, a - gasp fitted kitchen (very un-cool these days according to my neighbour, who had hers ripped out and replaced with someing 'distressed' - it looks it), no rats in the loft - and upvc windows. I've never been happier in my life and I think my house is warm, light, practical and beautiful so a big Pah! to anyone who says different No more frame painting! YAY!!!

brettgirl2 · 09/03/2009 08:57

We had wood in the house when I was growing up, it was horrible. I'm uncool and care, not at all. Enjoy your painting, trying to get them open when they've been painted and dark houses with period features. In a modern house wood doesn't look better anyway, it just makes it look like the windows are old, manky and need replacing.
