Windows. UPVC or wood?

Our windows are all currently UPVC - which I don't really like. Our rear windows need replacing and I want to change to wood. I know UPVC is maintenance free. What would you do?

Iorek. V big LOL. Can my DP wear his bumbag for thrashing this thing out? I think it helps him feel secure. And would Mr Iorek mind if he wore his cycle clip?

Would it be selling out? Can't decide whether I'm excited or horrified at the prospect of installing uPVC and sitting in my best sitting room in my quited M&S Classics waistcoat waiting for my winter fuel payment. Van Dal shoes do look comfy though!

my dearest, you are deep in denial if you believe that the sartorial equivalent of PLASTIC WINDOWS is M&S classics. It is so much worse than that.

Swedes · 19/03/2008 12:08

OBM - You're scaring me now. It's not Country Casuals is it?

Nope. Bon Marche.

onebatmother · 19/03/2008 12:17

To match your ersatz plastic windows: your new synthetic wardrobe

Swedes · 19/03/2008 12:23

OBM - You may think it an eerie coincidence, but that is precisely what I'm wearing. I thought it was the MN uniform?

OP posts:
onebatmother · 19/03/2008 12:30

lol. it is the MN uniform on the support thread for UPVC-considerers

Swedes · 19/03/2008 12:47

I can't decide whether I feel liberated or scared. I am so over a constant quest for style.

Swedes. there is a vast difference between a retreat from superficiality, and a denial of beauty.

noddyholder · 19/03/2008 14:08

wood just look better and the plastic always 'jumps out' on a period house although at the back it isn't so important and is much quieter and warmer

Swedes · 19/03/2008 14:12

I think this decline into hideousness is seriously steep. My Van Dals are slipping.

what about the new conposite UPVC, the doors seem to loo quite good, traditional styles and in colours, and you can get light oak effect UPVC which seems to look okay better than the old pretend dark wood UPVC stuff that looked like you could peel it off like that awful sticky stuff you get, it is so fake

hotcrossMonkeybun · 19/03/2008 14:17

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo...

fake wood upvc is EVEN WORSE than white upvc.

You will know. We will all know.

They will never let you in to heaven.

chocolatemummy · 19/03/2008 14:21

lol, well I guess it IS warmer and it IS easier to maintain and it IS more secure?
Its a hard one, although I hate some of the UPVC windows and doors mainly because they put identical one on thousands of rows and estates of council houses, making them all look identical AGAIN

chocolatemummy · 19/03/2008 14:27

why do they do these things like put rubbish identical windows and doors and paint them the strangest colours like peach and green (on pebbledash) ???

I have rubbish windows on my house nad its freezing and we are just about to get new one put in, not sure what type though but they will be UPVC because of all the reasons above,

Swedes · 19/03/2008 14:28

I spoke to three estate agents and they all said there are as many people who prefer uPVC as prefer wood so we should do what is best for us, but be sure to have proper wooden cills inside. One said his answer would have been different if it was a period house and we were replacing Victorian or Georgian sashes with uPVC - he said that would knock the value as it looks all wrong. This afternoon I walked down our road and the joining road. There is a real mixture, prob half uPVC and half wood and it's a very sought after location.

OBM - will you ever speak to me again?

Pebbledashing, there's a thought.

chocolatemummy · 19/03/2008 14:33

lol, you can now get upvc sash's too but they do cost I think,
whay are you getting new windows? what is wrong with the old ones?

Iota · 19/03/2008 14:38

when we had wooden windowes the south facing ones needed to be repainted every 2 years. It was a major PITA

We replaced with uPVC about 7 yrs ago - no problems since

Re ventilation - all the windows have vents at the top - tiny grills about 1 cm across x 40 cm - these are open all the time

Iota · 19/03/2008 14:39

or should that be grilles - no cooking

Swedes · 19/03/2008 14:40

Iota thanks. Our garden is also south facing and our next door neighbour said she needs to have her woodwork repainted every two years at the back (south facing) and every 3-4 years at the front (north facing). Decorators aren't cheap, and that's supposing you can find one to come when you want him.
