What are your stair and landing carpets please?

Have moved into a 3 year old house which was carpeted throughout in a cheap light brown flecked polyester carpet. It hasn't worn well, I'm not a fan of beige plus the previous owners (the builders themselves ffs) we're horrors both to my lovely nextdoor neighbours and left the house in a terrible state for me (all sinks leaking, all showers broken, boiler poorly fitted not under warranty and keeps breaking etc etc) so keen to replace 'their' carpet.

Can't afford to do whole house but it's the stairs and landing I notice the most.

I'm saying stripes but my teens tell me that's a long ago trend.

What are you good people using on stairs?

As much as the trauma of the house move has made me think I'd like to stay in this house forever I should be planning to downsize to a smaller house in 5-8 years if the teens grow up and become self sufficient.

We have a rich red 80/20 carpet. Not solid red, slightly heathery. We debated plain or stripes and settled on plain because I wear varifocals and sometimes struggle with moving past stripes - they swoop and make me feel off balance.

All fine and lovely until we got a white cat. Now I wish we'd chosen a stripy carpet!

We've just had hall, landings, two flights of stairs and our loft bedroom done in this carpet . We went for Light Green Heather - but it was really tough to find anything that wasn't beige or brown!

Don't be fooled by the prices shown on the website - Carpetright always run promotions, and ours was 50% off.

The other key thing is to get the best underlay you can afford.

We painted our stairs - each step is a different colour of the rainbow. Then we varnished it with clear matt varnish. It's bright & cheerful and brings me joy every time I use them. Plus cheap - each step (bar the top one) was just a sample pot.

I have stripes, but only on stairs and very small landing ! LVT in the hall, plus matching runner. Wearing well, but no animals or children in the house!

Wow @1stWorldProblems that's completely beautiful! I'd love to do that as painted last house stairs but mindful we might be selling in a few years so ought to keep to making it generically sellable 🥺

@1stWorldProblems - wow! Love it, we also have painted stairs but just floor paint black, I'd love to have more colour. which varnish did you use please?

1stWorldProblems · 29/05/2022 22:09

@DomusAurea - B&Q matt floor varnish I think - it was a few years ago. Still love it after several years of use.

Similar. I’ve always gone for terracotta/ burgundy pinky red. It’s forgiving (unless you’ve got a white cat) and looks good against white or real wood, which tend to be what bannisters are.

I love my stripes. ❤️ Teenagers 🙄

100% wool Berber. I buy my carpets from one of those discount warehouses that sell end of rolls, so never have cheap carpet but never pay a lot. Sometimes I have to wait a few weeks for the right colour or type to come in.

BIWI · 31/05/2022 09:14

We had to ditch the wool carpets as we had a terrible moth infestation Sad

Apparently they're rampant in S London. Fuckers.

lashy · 31/05/2022 09:24

We have this striped carpet after previously buying it in our old house.
It's very nice; however, the old house was a Victorian terrace and so we had it made into a runner and bound in black at the edges. The woodwork was white, with chrome stair rods and it looked gorgeous. Still very much like it (in the current, new build house), but this pattern, as a runner looked much better.

Following as we are replacing the stair and landing carpet this year. Not going for stripes as I want the same carpet to follow through into the bedrooms.

I’m thinking a mid grey with Heather effect. But the main thing is to get the best quality possible.

brokengoalposts · 31/05/2022 09:39

My 70yo IL's have just replaced their stripe stair and landing carpet as MIL said it was old fashioned, lol. Mine is beige (so what do I know) but is still going strong 21 years after having it put in. I may take it up at some point over the next 2/3 years.

Itsrainingatlast · 31/05/2022 15:37

I’ve just had stripes put in (in a GrII) listed Georgian townhouse.
I love them. And I have a cat and dog who leave fluff everywhere, stripes hide a multitude of sins.
I went to 3 local independent companies who never got back to me before I went to Carpetright, who were the cheapest, very efficient and very helpful.

We’re having this fitted on landing and stairs.

Following as I hope to replace our (porridge coloured) stairs and landings carpets in the next few years. I haven't had any samples yet but I'm quite interested in investigating the Unnatural Flooring products www.unnaturalflooring.com/fitted-flooring/washable-sisal/. They do a 'washable' sisal and flat weave. Since we have a dog, and regularly host large young people in the house, a washable flooring seems sensible.

averythinline · 31/05/2022 16:50

Derbee that looks pretty wheres it from? Although the unnatural flooring ones also great as had natural flooring once and looked rubbish really quickly...

tenjishut · 31/05/2022 16:53

Apologies if this is a stupid question but I've never had a stair runner before. What do you do on the landing? Do you continue the runner as a runner along landing?

lashy · 01/06/2022 00:07

@Tenjishut our landing was carpeted full width and over the bullnose of the top tread.
Everything from the top riser downwards, was runner width only.

tenjishut · 01/06/2022 00:14

thanks @lashy

1stWorldProblems · 01/06/2022 00:15

@averythinline it's called Timerous Beasties
by Brintons Carpets - we have it in our bedroom in the same grey colourway & I love it.

Notanotherwindow · 01/06/2022 00:30

Whatever you choose, keep it short and tight pile.

The denser the better, or loop weave if possible. Soft and fluffy will flatten down and become matted very quickly.

toastedcat · 01/06/2022 00:33

I think the berber/sisal stair carpets look gorgeous. Stripes in monochrome/nautical colours look good too I think. I do think some stripes look dated.
