What are your stair and landing carpets please?

Have moved into a 3 year old house which was carpeted throughout in a cheap light brown flecked polyester carpet. It hasn't worn well, I'm not a fan of beige plus the previous owners (the builders themselves ffs) we're horrors both to my lovely nextdoor neighbours and left the house in a terrible state for me (all sinks leaking, all showers broken, boiler poorly fitted not under warranty and keeps breaking etc etc) so keen to replace 'their' carpet.

Can't afford to do whole house but it's the stairs and landing I notice the most.

I'm saying stripes but my teens tell me that's a long ago trend.

What are you good people using on stairs?

As much as the trauma of the house move has made me think I'd like to stay in this house forever I should be planning to downsize to a smaller house in 5-8 years if the teens grow up and become self sufficient.

To go contrary to your teens we have stripes, put in a few months ago. Quite a colourful combo of yellows, greens and sienna with a bit of beige. We have dark wood floors all downstairs, striped stairs and hallway, then plain in the bedrooms. Short looped pile I think 80/20 wool. Always use best quality underlay.

TheCaddieisaBaddie · 01/06/2022 00:42

Herringbone pattern is meant to be on trend at the moment.

Nat6999 · 01/06/2022 01:02

Laminate look vinyl in the hall & 80/20 berber type on the stairs.

Nat6999 · 01/06/2022 01:07

My mum has a dark mink coloured berber in her lounge, hall, stairs & landing, 80/20, had it down 10 years & still looks like new even though it has been hammered by ds who has spilt on it a couple of times, hoovers well, no fluff coming off it & doesn't show dust & dirt.

Ruralbliss · 01/06/2022 08:44

Really loving all these pics and info.
@Derbee that is stunning thanks for sharing.

Interesting that herringbone is new trend.

With the stripes going up stairs do you then have landing in the same?

Annoyingly we can't have looped carpet due to four cats wanting to unloop it with claw sharpening activities.

Good advice re shortest pile, highest quality underlay etc.

Such a lot to think about!

This will be my carpet in a couple of weeks!

We have cream, wool herringbone. As a runner on the stairs and wall to wall on the landing. It suits our old house well.

hashtagjubilee · 01/06/2022 10:50

We have an old house
We have gone with beige it's boring but it works and we have gone with a non wool as need to be able to really scrub

Lovely underlay
It feels amazing.

Trinacham · 01/06/2022 10:58

I actually think stripes are back in.

We have Cormar Carpet's 'morning coffee' as we wanted a neutral greige colour.

We painted our stairs - each step is a different colour of the rainbow. Then we varnished it with clear matt varnish. It's bright & cheerful and brings me joy every time I use them. Plus cheap - each step (bar the top one) was just a sample pot.

I absolutely love it! Smile

all pictures so beautiful 😍
following as I have to lay stairs within weeks.
what do you think of polyester? or wool?

Badger1970 · 07/06/2022 12:40

We've got a fine wool stripe, in pale blues/greens/creams and willow coloured walls. We did put the best quality underlay down, don't skimp on that part. Gets hoovered once a week by the cleaner and is as good as the day we laid it about 8 years ago. Hides all sorts of sins, and we've got DC/dogs.

Izitso · 07/06/2022 12:50

Don't make the mistake we made - very expensive traditional carpet with a velvet type pile. Gives off SO much dusty black fluff despite regular vacuuming and always looks as if we've dropped tissue dust on it - sort of a white bloom 😒

minipie · 07/06/2022 13:01

We have a herringbone flat weave in a mid grey with a green tinge.

It looks lovely (IMO) and the cat doesn’t go for it (much) but it was a bugger for the carpet fitters to lay due to having to line up the herringbone! Had to get one landing re done as it was wonky. Also it’s a bit slippery as it’s flat rather than pile, kids have now learned to be careful especially in socks but I wouldn’t recommend it if anyone is infirm.

smileandsing · 07/06/2022 13:14

I have stripes similar to lashy's. Great for hiding the dirty marks!
What do teens know about carpets? They're not exactly experts in home decor purchases!

Cornettoninja · 07/06/2022 13:21

We have stripes on the stairs and landing and I love them (going for about four years in a rental). I don’t usually have particularly strong feelings on flooring but I’ll miss these when we move on!

GiantKitten · 07/06/2022 13:42

Stripy stairs here - hall is karndean and landing/attic stairs plain carpet.
pics from when laid, 7 years ago. It’s all a bit grubbier now but stripes still look good!

I have 3 cats like that and this looped carpet has resisted them! It’s very strong and stiff-backed. Forget make but will look up.

GiantKitten · 07/06/2022 13:51

It’s this one. It only comes in a 4m width so has to be sliced up for stairs. Backing is so stiff fitter had to warm it up with a hairdryer to bend it. Definitely cat proof!

that's gorgeous and how beautiful it is!

User487216 · 07/06/2022 14:59

We have a patterned one from the 90s, fashionable in it's day which has lasted a bit to long for my liking, we are replacing it with a Timorous beasties one similar to the lovely one pictured by @Derbee

theemmadilemma · 07/06/2022 15:47

Derbee · 31/05/2022 15:49

We’re having this fitted on landing and stairs.

That is gorgeous. And would look like that for all of 5 seconds in my house. cry

averythinline · 07/06/2022 17:30

That timourous beasties is great...i also really like herringbone but stairs are quite wonky and curvy so guess fitting tricky...
I love the liberty print by alternative flooring .. and some of their other patterns but dh vetoed cost as we likely to move in a couple of years

fingercrossed · 07/06/2022 21:40

Went to the site @GiantKitten and found that. flooringmegastore.co.uk/barbican/
would that be a good choice for stairs?

BigSkies2022 · 31/05/2022 16:27

Following as I hope to replace our (porridge coloured) stairs and landings carpets in the next few years. I haven't had any samples yet but I'm quite interested in investigating the Unnatural Flooring products www.unnaturalflooring.com/fitted-flooring/washable-sisal/. They do a 'washable' sisal and flat weave. Since we have a dog, and regularly host large young people in the house, a washable flooring seems sensible.

We’ve just put this in a playroom and stairs. It’s early days but has survived lots of mud so far and some paint spilling on it!
