Only a few posts left on the first thread of 2019, so here's a new one to get us started.

We've filled the second skip already! 3 days in and very little remains of the old extension. Apparently digging starts tomorrow - it's all so fastShock Am very happy with our builders so far, they're very approachable and accommodating. Hope it lasts!
Gcse results for us too tomorrow - will be on the Gin by 5pm I suspect!

soakedat3 · 22/08/2019 09:50

Currently having to rethink bbar lighting :( The new beams couldn't be hidden as much as we had hoped. That would be ok except where it is is off from the bbar. Now if I have pendants they will be too low when I am using the sink. And I may not have depth in that part of the ceiling to put downlights as appaently the new approved ones need about 85mm of depth. Boo!

What kind of lights does everyone else have?

WorrisomeHeart · 22/08/2019 09:52

Oh that’s annoying. Can you go for wall lights of some kind? We have downlights and pendants but our roof is relatively straight forward.

soakedat3 · 22/08/2019 11:25

I'm not sure if maybe a pendant on a short cord would work /not look stupid. I really like the pendants I chose as match the one for dining area.

Oh no help as keeps going on about how we couldn't have known about this at planning. Gritting teeth reminding him that some things like new beams can't be 100% known until ripped out the wall.

Bit annoyed today between oh and builder suggesting I could do away with a drawer pack and pull in the bbar so sink isn't under lights.

avocuddl · 22/08/2019 11:45

Oh that's annoying Soaked. How short would the pendants have to be? Might still look okay.

We are delayed here waiting for building control 🙄

soakedat3 · 22/08/2019 11:56

The pendants are 27cm so maybe only a 5cm or so cord. Stupid looking?

Wondering if maybe better to look at light fittings that are not on a cord.

Are bc coming out to inspect avo?

minipie · 22/08/2019 12:10

We’re just having a single largish pendant over the breakfast bar and then downlights elsewhere - is that an option, could you have pendant(s) where there is no sink and then some kind of downlight over the sink? If you don’t have the depth for recessed downlights there are some surface mounted ones now which look pretty stylish.

avocuddl · 22/08/2019 14:02

I'm debating weather to just have downlights and forget about the pendants. Still torn.

Bc just been out so they will concrete tomorrow! Builder still thinks they'll be done in 6 weeks 🙌🏽 we'll see, im still not convinced but all of yours seems to have been done so quick and I'm amazed at what has been done in 3 weeks here! Going to sneak off to Ikea now to look at cabinets etc!

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 22/08/2019 16:47

We have scaffolding!

Spent the morning with BBB going through the logistics of what he WANTS to do . My joists run in a most unhelpful direction apparently - I feel quite responsible for this error.
Already hit a problem with the venting of extractor which is on a different wall than before.
Debating moving soil stack and supporting pillar which of course means redoing the Steels calcs. I'm ok with pillar but Mr WhereDoes would like it gone.

FF and micro moving into dining room tomorrow while we still have a floor to roll the FF over...
Taking down internal walls maybe tomorrow so NO MORE DUSTING UNTIL OCTOBER!!!

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 22/08/2019 16:47

Do we need a new thread?

Spidershuffle · 22/08/2019 18:11

I'm finding lighting tricky - we're currently planning not to have pendants over the island due to sight lines and ceiling design. I hope the spots are enough focused light, will need to be careful about shadows when planning the positions.

Since our hob is going to be on the island and we're not planning an extractor over it I also worried about pendants getting mucky, but that's probably just me being a worrier - just want to get it right!

Instead, I'm trying to get lighting over and under cabinets/shelves etc. Think we'll have wall mounted Anglepoises on one wall too, which look good in photos on the internet...!

Has anyone lit a skylight? How does that work?

And yes to new thread soon!

Noroof · 22/08/2019 18:53

Our kitchen is done! And the upstairs is nearly done. Staircase is in...some walls need plastering and the shower room needs installing. As I only joined the thread about halfway through can I get the prize for the quickest whole house extension ever? Grin

avocuddl · 22/08/2019 19:12

Wow noroof!! You totally win! How long has it been? Let's see pics!!

gleegeek · 22/08/2019 19:40

That's amazing noroof 🥇 Are you thrilled with it? Such speed!
We've had an exciting day - not in a good way... 4 days in and we have a moat! When the builders dug out by the party wall, over a drain, water came rushing out😲 After the initial panic, we rang our neighbours, told them we needed to turn ours and their water off and try to locate the leak. The plumber came out and he reckons their builder didn't cap a pipe off properly and it's been gradually leaking since they had their extension done. They're waiting for the hole to dry out to try to find the leak tomortow. Great fun! Was all going so well😂

Noroof · 22/08/2019 19:44

We are into week 7 just. Here are some pics... nothing totally cleaned etc yet and I'm still waiting on door handles but considering my starting point it's amazing...

Obviously painting etc still to be done but the actual kitchen is in

avocuddl · 22/08/2019 19:56

Wow absolutely amazing!! 7 weeks?! Mad! What/Where is your flooring from?

soakedat3 · 22/08/2019 20:04

That is AMAZING @Noroof!! Yes you win!

Your builders have given you a whole new floor and renovated most of downstairs in the time you joined. :o :o Just as well I'm in a relatively good mood with New Dad today!

@gleegeek- at least it wasn't your fault you got a moat and neighbours should hopefully be glad it was found. That could've been quite damaging left long term!

We've had a lot of progress with kitchen today. People who are installing kitchens themselves - hats off!! Several times New Dad has had to make something bespoke to get it to work. But OMG I love my doors!! Not great photos as by the time they left the light had gone.

Our lighting situation hasn't been resolved yet. I think I have tonight and a bit of tomorrow before electrician comes...

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/property/3672616-Home-extension-2019-the-Third-thread-Drowning-in-Dust

It would be a shiny new thread if it wasn't for the builders dust

Noroof · 22/08/2019 22:02

Yeah a whole new floor with 2 new rooms, shower room and a new kitchen. Not bad for just under 7 weeks.

@avocuddl the flooring is called balterio milkshake

Isittheend · 23/08/2019 22:49

Hi, can I join in please? We have just had meeting with architect to go through design options which he is now going to draw for planning application.
In reality we probably won't get started till spring but I'd love to read as much as possible before then.
Thanks.
