Only a few posts left on the first thread of 2019, so here's a new one to get us started.

Thanks @WhereDoesThisToiletGo - sounds very similar to us! Also going for full height fridge and separate under counter freezer. Do you find the micro/oven as good as a normal oven?

Great news @MyNameIsJane (moving in, not the microwave - that's very irritating!) How finished is your house? Kids in a building site is something I'm not looking forward to!

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 17/08/2019 09:55

@Spidershuffle we're still at the building stage so new kitchen not yet in.
I do use the existing microwave combi as an oven occasionally but is very small so limits what will actually fit.

Noroof · 17/08/2019 10:18

@spidershuffle my builder is actually my hairdressers dad. She recommended himGrin he's been brilliant so I'm really happy

Noroof · 17/08/2019 10:20

I had several builders recommended actually and we went with the one I liked best and who gave a full price. We are in a fairly small town so everyone knows people etc

Noroof · 17/08/2019 10:21

Ovens... we just went with a double oven and then we will have our old microwave in the cupboard above. I don't entertain so can't imagine needing more than that plus my instant pot!

northernruth · 17/08/2019 19:08

Lovely seeing everyone's progress. It's been crazy busy here with lots of walls coming down etc. Daughters bathroom, which should have been finished while we were on holiday (been home two weeks) is still not done. sparky coming back to second fix next week and we have to swap a bath panel that's damaged.

Our living room windows are in and that room looks great.

We also had a big shed delivered that's down the bottom of the garden.

I'm still a bit upset about the render (which is not white despite being called white) - the solution appears to be that we will paint it. I also found out that the render is not silicon render which I thought I'd asked for but just through coloured sand and cement render. The plasterer has just given me a quote to repair the existing render to the front of the house of £1000 for labour and materials. Given that I've already paid for the not-white render, and that only the top half of the house needs rendering, this seems steep. We'll have to do the rear later as well.

I've got to the stage where I'm a little weary - it feels like I'm constantly picking up on things that aren't right. The french doors aren't sitting right and we can't change until the other doors are fitted but pieces are missing from the delivery so that can't be done yet - I changed supplier of doors for a shorter lead time and it's ended up taking even longer than the original supplier had quoted.

I'm also being "that client" - have made them move stud walls upstairs in the new bathroom so it feels more spacious

Am very jealous of all the finished kitchens!!!

We had actual brickies today but have been out all pm. Dying to see what's been done and stressing about the heavy rain that appeared late afternoon.

Plasterer was also meant to finish today.

I am also still v jealous of people who have kitchens. We (I) opted for a range this time round. I just want the extra hobs as fussy appetites can often mean cooking 3 different meals. Hmm I may hate not having eye level ovens as the neff fancy slide doors were so tempting.

Noroof · 17/08/2019 19:53

Our plasterer was busy today and finished off the downstairs living room which has been a big relief as it gives us a liveable space for the kids.

northernruth · 17/08/2019 23:53

Has anyone looked at induction hobs with integral downdraft extractors? I need a downdraft for my kitchen island but really would like a white hob with it integral

lightlypoached · 18/08/2019 07:31

@northernruth yes. We are getting a neff one. We looked at bora too but settled on this as our kitchen co are giving us a good price on it.

www.neff-home.com/uk/productlist/hobs/induction-hobs/T48TD1BN0?breadcrumb=extractorhoodsworktopinstallationintegratedhobextractor

All are fiendishly is expensive but when you add up the cost of extractor and fitting (esp the flush ceiling ones if you have an island or peninsula)) it's actually not that much more.

We have tall people in our house and wanted to avoid head bumps on a hanging down one and also to keep a clear view so we bit the bullett.

I'm quite excited to have the multi zone thing. We do a lot of cooking in our house (3 meals a day plus catering for CM kids too) so it will get used all the time.

Which ones have you looked at ?

TheFatberg · 18/08/2019 07:37

I'm enjoying seeing and hearing about everyone's progress. Ours has really stalled over the last few weeks, we're so close to being done and it's quite frustrating that the last bits aren't there yet. Also I want to know that we've paid everyone so I know how much money is left.

We got a recirculating extractor in the end for the island. From Luxair. One of the first things I bought for the kitchen yet it’s still not been fitted.

northernruth · 18/08/2019 21:32

@lightlypoached I'm just starting out really, the alternative is to have a separate downdraft extractor but that seems just as pricy. I want white tho so that might be the only option. Thanks for your reply.

northernruth · 18/08/2019 21:37

@MyNameIsJane that looks great - have you gone for the circular one? I'd not really thought about a recirculating one as we've always had them ducted to outside, but the island is about 4 metres from the outside wall so I'm not sure how effective it would be anyway

northernruth · 18/08/2019 21:59

Next question - I want to have brass taps in the main bathroom. What do I do about shower? There are a few brass showers out there but either very victorian in style (which is not what I'm after) or they are v expensive and have concealed valves (which I don't want due to previous bad experience with leaks in the walls and the difficulty and expense sorting it out).

We are having black and brass bathroom lights - would it look bad to have a black shower? The shower will be on the back wall of the bathroom alongside the basins so will be visible.

MyNameIsJane · 19/08/2019 09:15

@northernruth we went for this one: m.youtube.com/watch?v=LnT75YZhSJw (I had to search for the receipt on my email as I had forgotten which one it was!!)

I like the black shower items. It’s very now and I think it will match.

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 19/08/2019 11:17

I think since you've got the black and brass lights it should look OK with a black shower head etc, but if you can get a frame less door or cubicle it would be better than a black one.
You don't want the black to dominate those lovely taps

lightlypoached · 19/08/2019 12:45

I'd be wary with black taps etc. They show every spec of soap scum and scale. I knew someone who had a purple 1970s bath (!!!) and it was a nightmare to keep clean.

Brass is lovely though.

soakedat3 · 19/08/2019 17:51

Our kitchen finally arrived! So relieved!

northernruth · 19/08/2019 18:03

@lightlypoached that's what I was kind of worried about but don't really want chrome with the brass taps!

@wheredoes Yeah I think I'll try for a frameless door. ideally I'd like a reeded glass screen but they are only made by one company I think, and crazy expensive (think £1000+)

@soakedat3 that's great! When is it being fitted?

soakedat3 · 19/08/2019 19:46

What is a reeded glass screen @northernruth? I love the ones with black grid like panels. Is it that? They would go great with black shower fittings. Your bathroom sounds very luxe!

Hopefully this week. They have started doing some assembly then stopped to do mist coat. Only the large 1000 larder needs putting together. All the rest is pre assembled. I opened some of the doors to make sure I still liked them all. Luckily I do - just as well said OH.

We are painting and stairs went in today. I'm a bit miffed as my fridge door seems to have been damaged by the builders... once the doors are on it won't really be noticeable but I'm a bit annoyed as it's a 350 quid fridge with a dent. What do I do?

Spidershuffle · 19/08/2019 22:14

Thanks @WhereDoesThisToiletGo and @Noroof - think a single and combi should do it then! Jealous of your useful connections, Noroof, but what a pain about the fridge. No useful suggestions, sorry.

That rooms looks amazing, @northernruth and the garden view is beautiful. Reeded glass with black and brass sound gorgeous, looks very slick with marble style (or actual marble!) tiles from what I've seen on the internet. Do you find that its really easy to find pictures with amazing ideas, but then really hard to find suppliers within budget that can match the ideas? When we did our bathroom it took me almost 6 months to find tiles I was happy with (I've promised not to be as fussy this time...!). I've almost stopped using Pinterest as I'm getting too annoyed with all these ideas that I can't execute!

We have also been debating extractors, think we're settled on having one in the wall, rather than over the hob on the island, to avoid all the ducting on the ceiling. It also means we can put the motor in our utility room so that the noise in the kitchen is lessened - that was the architect's idea, but I quite like it. Remains to be seen whether it will be as effective as over the hob though - the downdraft hobs are a fab solution.

Looks like an exciting week ahead for you, @soakedat3 ! Glad you still like them!!

soakedat3 · 19/08/2019 22:29

@noroof, we also have a dent in our new FF. Made by OH!! He has purchased a kit from the web to remove it. I think it uses hot glue and suction. We've not tried it yet but I will report back if/when we do. We are waiting on a part for it as the water dispenser didn't work from day 1 and the engineer offered a replacement FF or just the part. Couldn't be bothered with the faff of getting a whole new FF so opted for the part. If it doesn't fix the problem I will ask for a new FF and that will "fix" the dent at the same time... :D I'd actually forgotten we had a dent as had covered it with a magnet else I might have said yes to the replacement FF!

gleegeek · 19/08/2019 22:56

You're mostly all a long way ahead of us but I've been enjoying reading all your progress catch ups Smile
Today, finally though, our build has started! Our lovely father and son team arrived and started demolishing the back of the house almost immediately - a bit of a shock to the system but exciting to know we've finally begun. Looking forward to gathering tips from all of you!
