Boiling water tap in kitchen - yay or nay??

We are in the middle of a refreshment that includes a new kitchen. Our builder has suggested we consider installing one of those hot/boiling water taps. He says he has one and loves it as he was able to get rid of his kettle (so have one less thing on the counter) and finds cooking much quicker as he can fill pans with boiling water.

I don't know anyone who has one, so can't ask anyone in real life. Can those who have them give me their experiences and opinions please? I have three children - two teens and an almost 9 year old. Is there a scalding risk? Are you glad you have them and use them loads or do you think why did I bother?

Nay. They never get the water boiling enough for a decently made cup of tea IMO. Waste of energy just sitting there warming away unless in use all the time.

Interesting thanks. I had heard that water should not be boiling for tea. Our kettle has temperature choices on it which my husband likes.

Water should be boiling for black tea but not for coffee.

Hmmmm.....we mostly drink herbal tea. We are obsessed with coffee but have a bean to cup machine for that so don't need the hot tap.

Yep, boiling for tea. Not boiling for coffee as it scalds the grounds.

As far as I know, they are only an efficiency saving if you boil your kettle more than 7 times a day. I do appreciate the idea of not having to have a kettle on 'display' though and they are probably a spacesaving godsend in tiny, high spec kitchens.

We absolutely love ours, use it so much every day. Don't miss the kettle at all and would definitely have another boiling tap installed if we re-fitted or moved. Get very antsy waiting for a normal kettle to boil now. Grin

We have a coffee machine too, so mainly use it for tea, cooking, odd bit of sterilising, cleaning etc. Love it.

Not got one but the ones I have used haven't been hot enough for a decent cup of black tea. But if you don't drink that it doesn't matter. They aren't so bad that your tea drinking friends will forsake you. Not unless you also have inadequate tea bags Smile

I could never understand the need for these, but we inherited ours with the house and I bloody love it. If it broke tomorrow, I'd replace it!

Only little DCs here who can't reach the counter, so no scalding risk. Surely by the time they're big enough to reach, they're sensible enough to know??

Great for filling saucepans to boil veg or pasta etc. I would still have to have a kettle for a proper brew but for herbal tea it would be fine! Looks snazzy too

Wouldn't be without mine. I have a quooker which is the only boiling water tap - the rest operate below bp. Makes pasta, veg etc much less of a faff. Very safe - has the same style operating mechanism as a pill bottle. Looks great and no kettle on the side to clean around.

We bought one for work and it only does boiling or cold - no ordinary-hot setting. We hadn't realised this when we ordered it.

It's ok. You can make coffee from the tap but not tea or Pot Noodle!

I have one and love it. Has boiling and normal mixer temperatures too. It's called the insinkerator 3 in 1.

We have one at work. No one likes it, it doesn't make a decent cup of tea and it has a tendency to splutter .

We are considering one in our planned kitchen extension and I tried every demo model they had on display at the Grand Designs show in October!
I concluded that my favourite was the Zip Tap. The water seemed to come out less spluttery and seemed less volatile!

We have one at work. It's always breaking down, or suddenly getting temperamental and spitting boiling water all over passersby. Has put me right off getting one.

They're so useful, we use ours all the time. I agree with a pp - waiting for a kettle makes us impatient when we're away!

Tonight I was cooking pasta and the water boiled away... took forever to boil the kettle to top it up and I thought 'I wish I had one of those hot water taps!'

A few of my friends have them and I refused as part of our kitchen build. They make the water ' fizzy' not really fizzy but defo energised in a weird way!
