Boiling water tap in kitchen - yay or nay??

Wiifitmama · 23/02/2017 20:35

We are in the middle of a refreshment that includes a new kitchen. Our builder has suggested we consider installing one of those hot/boiling water taps. He says he has one and loves it as he was able to get rid of his kettle (so have one less thing on the counter) and finds cooking much quicker as he can fill pans with boiling water.

I don't know anyone who has one, so can't ask anyone in real life. Can those who have them give me their experiences and opinions please? I have three children - two teens and an almost 9 year old. Is there a scalding risk? Are you glad you have them and use them loads or do you think why did I bother?

Thanks!

Love my waste disposal though!

Brother has one in his brand spanking new, spent nearly £1M on his renovations house. Couldn't work out why his tea making skills had deteriorated so badly until I realised he wasn't using properly boiled water. Vomit -->Envy
His has a safety thingie on it so younger children wouldn't be able to accidentally use it, some sort of push, twist doo-da. Didn't bother working it out, just got their ancient kettle out and made a decent cup of tea Grin.

We recently had a new kitchen put in & got boiling tap on sink & a cold water filter for drinking......
We bloody love it!

Can not possibly wait for a kettle to boil - dahhhling😂

LizzieMacQueen · 23/02/2017 23:09

I love and use mine a lot but it's quite separate from the water tap at the sink. In fact it's located right next to the hob to make pan filling that bit easier.

It's a quooker.

ImtheSantaAnaWinds · 24/02/2017 00:28

Mine is just one tap over the sink. Does normal hot and cold too.

superoz · 24/02/2017 00:44

We have a Quooker. I have to say I was a complete sceptic before and only believed in using the kettle to make a decent cup of tea but I'm a convert.

We have an island with a second mini sink so it's installed over that, and plumbed in with the normal water supply too. It's great for ready made hot water for boiling pasta, blanching spinach etc. I work at home so I am forever making hot drinks in the day.

It's got a safety mechanism on it so you can't ever accidentally turn the boiling water on - my dc (9 and 2) use it as a normal tap.

If you're in a hard water area you will need the scale control filter otherwise your tap will get clogged with loads if limescale.

VeritysWatchTower · 24/02/2017 06:30

We have one and I wouldn't be without it. It does not splutter, ever. If I could afford it I would have a Quooker but we went with a cheaper model and we are very happy with it.

It only dispenses filtered hot water, I have a normal kitchen tap for hot and cold water. We have an American Fridge freezer for the filtered drinking water.

I love the fact I can fill a washing up bowl with a small amount of water to wash a pan etc without running a huge amount of clean drinking water down the plug hole until it gets hot enough to wash up with from the normal tap.

I was going to ask about this, I have very hard water here. How does the scale filter work & how often do you need to be fiddling about underneath the sink to maintain in?

MrsNuckyThompson · 24/02/2017 06:39

Some brands are 'hot water'. These are rubbish because it is not hot enough for hot drinks.

Some brands are boiling and these are great because you can just get rid of the kettle. If boiling potatoes or whatever you can just start instantly and don't need to wait for the pan to boil etc.

Quooker do the boiling taps. My mum has one and it's great and we're about to fit one too.

We have Zip Taps at work and they're bloody brilliant!

MissMillament · 24/02/2017 13:39

We have an Insinkerator. I love it. It is boiling water only and I use it for hot drinks, cooking (water for pasta, veg, stock etc) and cleaning. The kettle has been completely retired. I will never have a kitchen without one again.

Bluebellevergreen · 24/02/2017 13:46

When I did the energy audit for our building it turn out that those devices were the most energy comsuming ones in the whole place, including photocopiers!
So I wouldnt

Anotherminime · 24/02/2017 13:56

We have a zip tap and love it! It does boiling, you can set it to different temperatures including 100 degrees. It also does chilled still and sparkling water.

BerylStreep · 24/02/2017 14:02

We have two!

At home we have the franke Atlantis, which is the boiling water & tap all in one. The good thing about it is that the water container sits under the kick board, so doesn't take up any cupboard space.

We have one of the separate ones that sits to the side of the sink in our holiday home (possibly insinkerator). Both are good.

specialsubject · 24/02/2017 15:12

Never forgotten the stupid things at work which spat out water hot enough to scald but not hot enough for tea.

A kettle filled to the level needed takes about a minute.

Do these things keep the water hot and then boil as needed? Do they produce water at 100 centrigrade? While obviously the energy needed to boil water is not related to the device used, how much energy do they actually use?

ThisNight · 24/02/2017 15:25

Quooker fusion here. It's brilliant and I use it much more than I thought I would. DM says she prefers it for tea, perhaps because it's filtered.

Beingrippedoff · 24/02/2017 15:39

I don't really understand how they work but would seem in theory hideously energy inefficient to me prepares to be corrected

Firefries · 24/02/2017 15:45

We bought a house a few years ago and it had one of these from probably when they first came out in the 70s or 80s? and it was disconnected. We got the impression the fad passed and it was no longer useful and no they didn't have young children so I didn't get the impression it was because of the danger around kids.
Unless you use really hot water a lot for going over your dishes then i wouldn't bother. Most dishwashers do the trick these days with steam so up to you still.

Queenhoneybee · 24/02/2017 15:55

I have a Quooker & love it. Worth every penny.

SilverShins · 24/02/2017 16:50

I was going to write exactly what Queen wrote. Go for It Smile

NotCitrus · 24/02/2017 17:02

We thought about it but had a fairly tight budget, so spent £20 on a new efficient kettle and the rest on some really lovely granite.

The Zip taps at work kept breaking into fail-unsafe mode, but if we reported it the whole thing would be taken away.

1ris · 24/02/2017 19:49

I love our Insinkerator - it has nearly boiling plus regular cold water PLUS it filters the water. That is a big plus for us.

Millimat · 24/02/2017 22:45

Is it permanently boiling water? Surely that uses a huge amount of energy?

bouncydog · 25/02/2017 06:49

We have a Franke Omni 4 in 1. Water is boiling. Also provides normal hot and cold and filtered cold. Half the price of a quooker and we love it. Even hubby is converted and if it broke tomorrow we would go out and buy another.

Iwantawhippet · 25/02/2017 07:12

Wookiee is the only modern gadget in our kitchen. Love it. Takes a stage out of cooking.
