Boiling water tap in kitchen - yay or nay??

Wiifitmama · 23/02/2017 20:35

We are in the middle of a refreshment that includes a new kitchen. Our builder has suggested we consider installing one of those hot/boiling water taps. He says he has one and loves it as he was able to get rid of his kettle (so have one less thing on the counter) and finds cooking much quicker as he can fill pans with boiling water.

I don't know anyone who has one, so can't ask anyone in real life. Can those who have them give me their experiences and opinions please? I have three children - two teens and an almost 9 year old. Is there a scalding risk? Are you glad you have them and use them loads or do you think why did I bother?

Thanks!

Sorry qooker.

It's funny how almost without exception all the people who have a bad experience have only used one at work and all the people with a good experience actually have one in their kitchen. I wonder about the quality of the ones in offices and whether they're just overused. We just love ours.

Inksinkerator here and we love it, we have put a timer on ours so it switches off all night and the days we are all out

We have a quooker and absolutely love it. I'm a tea drinker and the water is definitely hot enough for that. We have the model that is boiling water only so completely separate from the normal tap. The DC know they're not to touch it, but as it's right at the back of the worktop they can't reach it anyway, and it's got a press and twist safety feature. As others have said we'd replace it tomorrow if it broke!

jelly10 · 25/02/2017 07:35

One thing to be careful of if you do go for it though - I assumed they all had a safety feature and we nearly ordered a different brand which dispensed boiling and cold filtered water, it was only when I asked the question to double check that we realised you just had to press the lever for it to work which wouldn't have been great for children imo

I can't understand why there's a safety issue at all tbh. Children are little people - how do they ever reach up to taps? I don't get that at all unless you have kids up on your work tops.

Oh the person who has Insinkerator on a timer that sounds good. Must tell DH.

We have one at work, good for productivity as no idle chatting while waiting for the kettle to boil, but I'm not convinced the water is properly boiling for tea. I would also love someone to explain to me how they are energy efficient given the amount of heat that is exuded below the counter.

paperbattles · 27/02/2017 09:57

Have got a Quooker - it is so helpful to have - Makes washing up so much easier - especially greasy/ sticky pans, as it lifts the residue off so much more quickly. Ours has lasted for 7 years without even a service.
I would really miss it now. Definitely recommend one.

Svp1978 · 10/06/2017 09:36

I have one and its brilliant. It's saves time and energy boiling the kettle and its a useful addition. The water is 110 degrees in the boiler but comes out at just under 100 so despite what anyone says, it is always hot!
One thing to note is that if you live in a hard water area, it might be worth having a limescale filter put on as you can bet your Hitec filter will need to be changed before the usual 5 yrs.

Old thread I know but for anyone considering the Quatreau tap (also does sparkling water) from Pure H2O - don't. 14 months after paying £5k for it, I've just paid (yes, paid) them to come and take it away. I know someone else who had to do the same in December. The sparkling water doesn't contain bubbles - it just 'tastes sparkling'. So is effectively flat water that tastes carbonated. That's when it works at all. Most of the time nothing comes out because it either freezes or overpasses. I know another lady who had hers out (also had to pay to have it removed) because hers flooded her kitchen twice. Worse than the product is the customer service. The most appalling I have experienced. Ever. I'm on MN this morning reading reviews so we can decide what to replace it with so thought I'd add my two cents worth! Whatever you do, don't do the Quatreau.

We've got one and I love it. I also love tea and our water definitely comes out boiling! You just need to let it run for a couple of seconds to clear the water from the pipes. We've got a Franke combination one. It's brilliant for hot drinks and in cooking. Especially when you realise you forgot to put the pasta on!

My inlaws just had one fitted with their new kitchen. Not sure the brand, but it is fabulous (I’m really fussy about tea and it is perfect, definitely boiling water). I need the same one when I move to a new place!!

I am intrigued whether the make up of the household affects this decision. My son doesn’t drink tea or coffee (at uni so a moot point anyway) and my OH and i work long hours so I maybe only have a cup of tea in the evening once or twice a week.
I put the right amount of water to boil, then get the cup, tea bag and milk and then the water is boiled.
I do cook a lot but I have never waited for a pan to boil, I am always doing other stuff.
I just didn’t think it would be useful for our lifestyle but can see that if I was at home all day with young children, my views may be different.
