What colour shall I paint my front door?

No funds available for a nice new door (sob) so I've decided to paint it instead. Our house is 1900 Edwardian(?) terrace, with soft cream painted brickwork. Door furniture is brass and the door itself is currently a navy blue.

Any ideas on what would look nice on this type of house? I like a bit of colour so dont really want grey or black. Anything too pale will require more cleaning right?

The people down the road from us have a really lovely, slightly dirty-coloured but still cheerful yellow. It really brightens up the entrance, I admire it each time I go by and then open my horrible upvc monstrosity

Percephone · 20/06/2014 22:08

I do love a glossy red front door.

AnnaLegovah · 20/06/2014 22:14

I dunno about yellow, isn't that too close to cream? And its bound to get grubby quick. Wink

Like the idea of red...nobody else on the street has red, not sure if thats good or bad.

It's good! Everyone else is just boring.

ThePrisonerOfAzkaban · 20/06/2014 22:23

A bright red, love a red door! Or an egg shell green

Littleoaktree · 20/06/2014 22:30

Ours is farrow & ball green smoke in a gloss finish, I love it, it's a 'period' looking colour so fits in with the house (ours is late Victorian) but isn't too pale or too bright.

Twistiesandshout · 20/06/2014 22:31

Black :)

Selks · 20/06/2014 22:32

Teal or petrol blue. Would look fab with the pale cream brickwork.

libertytrainers · 20/06/2014 22:33

midnight blue, to my dad midnight blue is the colour front doors should be painted, the end Grin

AnnaLegovah · 20/06/2014 22:34

Looking at Farrow & ball - I quite like Incarnadine and card room green...

I think black though I know you said otherwise!

PigletJohn · 20/06/2014 22:35

red is particularly prone to fade.

If it faces the sun, black is especially prone to blister or crack as it heats up.

If you have an Edwardian house, I hope it has a panelled wooden door. Dirt and dust will accumulate in the mouldings, so white will need frequent washing.

Green smoke is lovely littleoak, that would go with cream.

As the door is already blue I'd like to have something different. It's always seemed a bit dark to me as the door is West facing.

Mine is dark purple/plum, I've had lots of positive comments.

AnnaLegovah · 20/06/2014 22:40

It is panelled piglet but its sadly not the original door - its a 4 panel with a glass half-arch panel towards the top. No idea what era it is. Most of our neighbours still have the original doors Envy

Yes it goes nicely with cream, we have pale cream woodwork/exterior walls and it works well. Our door used to be navy blue as well and I wasn't sure about making the change but am v pleased with the result. It did take a few coats though.

TweeAintMee · 20/06/2014 22:44

Purple with green stripes - or spots perhaps? You'll never be bored!

RedCherryPie · 20/06/2014 22:44

We need to see a pic of the house and the door to decide

burnishedsilver · 20/06/2014 22:53

I like this colour

What colour shall I paint my front door?
AnnaLegovah · 20/06/2014 23:06

Ok I've managed to add a pic to my profile - its a bit out of date as the paint work is now totally cream and you cant see the door closely but it might help. Smile

I see it is set into an open porch. That's good, as it will be protected from the worst of the weather.

williaminajetfighter · 20/06/2014 23:19

I passed a period property the other day and the door was a bright turquoise. It looked fab and I made a mental note to paint the door of my house the same colour!

RedCherryPie · 20/06/2014 23:52

Red
