What colour shall I paint my front door?

No funds available for a nice new door (sob) so I've decided to paint it instead. Our house is 1900 Edwardian(?) terrace, with soft cream painted brickwork. Door furniture is brass and the door itself is currently a navy blue.

Any ideas on what would look nice on this type of house? I like a bit of colour so dont really want grey or black. Anything too pale will require more cleaning right?

We are painting our front door tomorrow!

It's a 1930s house and we've chosen black, but after reading for this thread I'm thinking I should be a bit more adventurous. Turquoise?! Yay.

Anything would be better than the nasty chipped and scuffed royal blue we have now.

Green is a good colour for a front door as it's meant to bring good finances and prosperity

Wishfulmakeupping · 21/06/2014 01:04

I love card room green was just coming on to suggest that OP

I think Lamp Room Grey by F and B would look good with cream. I would avoid blue, red or green. I would consider Cornforth White (a very pale grey) or Pavilion Grey. I think chrome door furniture looks smarter than brass, especially with grey. Brass looks best with dark colours which you do not want.

Still torn between red and green I think. Smile

Not a fan of grey anywhere in a house, it just screams 'prison' to me. I know its really in fashion now. Blush

MissScatterbrain · 21/06/2014 08:24

F&B advice page for front doors also google Farrow and ball front doors and you will get loads of images and you can see how your chosen colour will look.

I would also paint a large sheet of paper and pin to your door to see how it would look.

AnnaLegovah · 21/06/2014 08:28

Thanks missscatterbrain Smile.

Purple is a definite no. Red is outlandish enough for me. Wink

A royal blue or grass green

burnishedsilver · 21/06/2014 09:02

A friend on mine just painted her front door a kind of bright teal/turquoise colour. Its horrible. It doesn't suit the house at all.

Whatever colour you go for, I'd do it in eggshell not gloss.

RedCherryPie · 21/06/2014 09:41

As the door is set back inside a porch a red would help it to stand out more

AnnaLegovah · 21/06/2014 10:30

Do you like red redcherry? Grin

RedCherryPie · 21/06/2014 11:57

Yeah esp if it a sort of deep red, like a red cherry lol

So have you decided

RedCherryPie · 21/06/2014 11:58

How about afew plants or something to jazz up the front a bit

MyMelody · 21/06/2014 12:04

what about a forget-me-not blue colour?

Mintyy · 21/06/2014 12:05

I love a black front door but unfortunately I can't see your picture.

AnnaLegovah · 21/06/2014 16:26

Sorry Mintyy it should be working now!

I've got a window box Red, that pic was taken before I had it. Smile

Was going to get some sample pots today but didnt get a chance to look. A pale blue might work.

Ive just noticed theres a crack in one of the panels - would light or dark paint be best to conceal it?

We just got a new one which is bright red. DH was a bit unsure when I suggested it but even he agrees now that it looks great. 1920s house, cream and black colour scheme.

Cardinal · 21/06/2014 16:44

Turquoise!

RedCherryPie · 21/06/2014 16:54

What you should do is paint t red then.put some red plants inthe flower boxes

AnnaLegovah · 23/06/2014 21:00

Ok so I've narrowed it down. Bought a few tester pots today. I came up with the brainwave of finding a colour thats also in the mosaic tiling on our front door step, so it brings out the colour.

Sadly the greens I tried dont look right. So its between two reds - Incarnadine or Picture Gallery Red, or Cook's Blue. Any thoughts?

RedCherryPie · 23/06/2014 21:15

red

lolGrin

rectory red

MissScatterbrain · 23/06/2014 21:17

I would go for cook's blue - it will stand out more than the reds you have chosen.

supadupapupascupa · 23/06/2014 21:33

Red. It's a warm, passionate, romantic colour. Like a great big warm hug. What more could you want from your front door?
