£3K for removals?! Is this standard?!

Just been quoted £3K for packing and removals. It's the first quote I've got in, from a middle of the road type company, so neither a big well known one nor a small local one. I'm a bit Shock. Perhaps I was naive, but when I've moved previously I've done it in multiple trips with my own car so I had no idea. But that was pre-kids; now it's a big family house that has to be packed up and moved. We don't have much clutter - even the removals guy said 'blimey, you're not hoarders are you?' [proud minimalist moment] so it's not like they'd have acres of ornaments to wrap up.

Any recommendations? We are in London moving to Sussex.

Find out what is included.

You've said "packing and removals", is this the full-service option where they come and pack everything up (wrapping it nicely) and then unpack at the end? Will it be cheaper if you put it in boxes yourselves?

CailinDana · 09/08/2012 14:06

No recommendations I'm afraid, but just to say that is extortionate. We moved from South to Midlands last year, got everything packed and moved for us and it cost about £800.

Try a local company, they were the ones who gave us the best quotes.

ElephantsCanRemember · 09/08/2012 14:08

We also had the full packing (they packed everything) and removal service. Granted we only moved a couple of miles. It cost £800 (approx, can't remember exact price) That was with a local company in the Midlands. Bloody fantastic they were too!

TheCokeMachine · 09/08/2012 14:13

We're just about to use these people www.londonsmoving.com they came in a little cheaper than Pickfords and a local firm who quoted us. We've heard really positive things about them.

Rhubarbgarden · 09/08/2012 14:14

Hmm right glad I asked. Yes it is full packing service - got a toddler and small baby so life is hard enough without doing the packing myself. I'm happy to pay for someone else to do it - just surprised at quite how much they quoted! I clearly need to shop around...

Get a breakdown. We had packing the day before and removal, 2 vehicles but only about 8 miles betwen properties and it was around £1500 5 years ago.

maybeIwillmaybeIwont · 09/08/2012 14:22

Not a lot to add but 6 years ago, when houses were at a premium, we moved from Norfolk to Northamptonshire, big house, very large furniture van and it cost about £1500, with packing one end, took 2 days to pack up but no unpacking the other end, my boxes (had only moved 20 months before so still had own boxes and packing), so £3000 seems a lot but not sure what is included. Our move was about 90 miles.Moved on a Thursday so cheaper!

ElephantsCanRemember · 09/08/2012 14:24

Meant to say, that is how much it cost me a year ago when I moved.

Blackduck · 09/08/2012 14:42

We have been quoted a 1K for moving (approx 40 miles), large semi detached, lots of boxes! and an additional £500 if they pack as well.
Elephants who did you use?

ElephantsCanRemember · 09/08/2012 14:44

I used BMB Removals. We had a 3bed house (including full to the brim cellar and attic and garage). They packed everything and were so good. I would reccommend them to anyone.

FruitSaladIsNotPudding · 09/08/2012 14:45

We paid £1300 for full packing and moving from London to herts last year. So that is extortionate!

marilynmonroe · 09/08/2012 14:49

We used a company called Steve frieze who were excellent. Negotiated on the price too. They are based in croydon.

StiffyByng · 09/08/2012 15:12

We moved about half a mile, within Londom. Full packing, removal, emptying of three storage rooms around London and bringing them to us totalled £1,500.

bronze · 09/08/2012 15:13

We moved recently. 6 of us 4bed to give an idea, we also have a lot I outside stuff animal housing etc and we paid 850 for removals no packing

OwlLady · 09/08/2012 15:17

we moved a similar distance which included a dartford crossing journey and it cost us £750 so yes I think that's very steep

OwlLady · 09/08/2012 15:18

might be worth ringing a company in sussex where you are moving to and see what they quote. It muight be a london thing iykwim

Yankeecandlequeen · 09/08/2012 15:23

how much?!?! Bloodyhell! I'm moving next week & my company will come in & take the list I've given them, load onto lorry & travel 2 miles up the road & take said items into room of choice for £50 an hour. I haven't much to take (wardrobes, beds, mattressess, chest of drawers, toys etc). But £3000?!?! I'd expect top class wrapping & cleaning up for that!

Rhubarbgarden · 09/08/2012 20:37

Wow. This is very encouraging! Thanks for the recommendations. I shall do more ringing round tomorrow. I will be very relieved if we don't have to spend £3K! Good idea to try Sussex companies too. Smile

daisylulu · 09/08/2012 20:39

I'd recommend Martells based in Sussex

suntodayplease · 09/08/2012 21:16

We just paid £800 to be moved a mile, with full packing service in the SW. As others said, 3k seems ridiculous!

Good luck with the move.

Doilooklikeagoldmedallist · 09/08/2012 21:26

We paid £600 to move ( we packed ourselves ) only went about 6 miles , they did 2 runs in the van ( and moaned and moaned ,)
Ooh you've got so much stuff ,
Well you came round and quoted Mate
This is in south Wales .

Oooooh - are you moving to the one you had the previous thread about???

Rhubarbgarden · 09/08/2012 21:55

Not the moneypit, Redshoes, we were outbid on that. But the same week as the sealed bids deadline, a house we had an offer rejected on a year ago was suddenly reduced in price. We went back to them with a slightly increased offer and after initially rejecting us again, they finally accepted! So we are very happy as we always loved that house but thought it was beyond our reach.
