£3K for removals?! Is this standard?!

Just been quoted £3K for packing and removals. It's the first quote I've got in, from a middle of the road type company, so neither a big well known one nor a small local one. I'm a bit Shock. Perhaps I was naive, but when I've moved previously I've done it in multiple trips with my own car so I had no idea. But that was pre-kids; now it's a big family house that has to be packed up and moved. We don't have much clutter - even the removals guy said 'blimey, you're not hoarders are you?' [proud minimalist moment] so it's not like they'd have acres of ornaments to wrap up.

Any recommendations? We are in London moving to Sussex.

Durrant removals near Horsham are v good.

MrsJREwing · 10/08/2012 10:07

Have you a lot of things/big house, that quote seems a lot.

Any York based removals welcome here Smile. FWIW we moved from Aberdeen to York last year - 3 day move process packing up a 4 bed house and unpacking at the other end; cost £1,500 (though that does include a bit of a discount for the drunk packer who was a bit useless).

Rhubarb we used a firm based in west dulwich in February to move from London to Cheshire.

We were in a 3 bed top floor flat, had the full packing service and think it cost £1k all in. Think it was around £200 for the packing and £800 for the move itself.

They were amazing, couldn't recommend them highly enough.

We literally walked out of our house on the Tuesday morning with an overnight bag, left the place as if we were literally going out for the day, drove up north, stayed with my parents overnight and met the guys at the new house on the Wednesday at 9am. Everything was packed immaculately and not a single breakage. There was no stress involved at all (with the move itself that is, don't get me started on the house buying process!).

Good luck with it.

We have used GB Liners and Bishops Move. Both very good and no where near £3k, even for the full packing and overnight move we had with GB Liners

Sorry to hijack thread OP but does anyone know of a decent removals company in Kent? Had 4 companies in, they have looked around, loft (which will be emptied, garage full of prepacked boxes) 3 bed end of terrace and the cheapest was 700 ish. That is with no packing and we would have to pay more for boxes. Most expensive was £1000 ish they will 'lend' us boxes but charge £20 to take them away!
I was told it is better to get them in to look as the estimate is more accurate.
We are only moving 2 miles up the road though!

pinksancerre · 04/09/2012 23:03

We used 7 day removals in erith in Kent to move us from Kent to Wiltshire. They were bloody brilliant, efficient and the nicest group of men with fab attitude! They charged £700 5 yrs ago, with some packing inc. much better than pickfords who were shocking!

gregssausageroll · 05/09/2012 13:47

I moved from Edinburgh to Australia for £3.5K including all packing. Shop around.

goldnikcname · 05/09/2012 21:03

pinksancerre thank you so much! Will give them a try, packing as well would be amazing!!

FrameyMcFrame · 05/09/2012 21:12

That's a rip off unless you have a grand piano and are moving into an upstairs flat...

IWanders · 05/09/2012 21:15

Try Britannia Movers, they quoted us just over £1,000 we're in a 4 bed no packing but our move is 3-4 hours away. They always seem to work out cheapest.

dikkertjedap · 05/09/2012 21:19

Not sure if Bishop's Move covers your area, but if they do then I would recommend asking them for a quote (they are based in Oxford). They do a good job, are careful with the stuff, pleasant to deal with and they look well after the house (eg covering all carpets etc.).

That sounds much too expensive. Have you thought about a man and van company? They do the same service but at a much cheaper price.
Man and a Van London are pretty good as my friend just used them, but they are London based.

MrsSchadenfreude · 18/09/2012 17:10

They must be gently caressing every item of furniture with a virgin's breasts for that price!

horrorcomic · 18/09/2012 17:13

My Mum used Bishops to move from Sussex to Derbyshire. Think the have a few depots, sure there is one in Sussex and one in Leicester. They were great.

financialwizard · 18/09/2012 17:13

23 cubic mtrs - Quoted £1500 to move us 40 miles (one truck load).

JessicaBailey · 19/09/2012 21:54

Way too much! Several options for you, from full service to man-with-van (okay "men" with van!) that should all be cheaper, see below for a guide as to which will be best for your circumstances:

Sounds too much. Try f smith and sons. Excellent.

feminewiles · 20/09/2012 17:42

My husband and I run our own removal business, and u are being ripped off big time

feminewiles · 20/09/2012 17:44

Look for an Independant company not 1 of the chain ones as the chains higher over heads

KirstyP83 · 28/09/2012 12:58

Did they tell you what the volume of your belongings is?
