£3K for removals?! Is this standard?!

Just been quoted £3K for packing and removals. It's the first quote I've got in, from a middle of the road type company, so neither a big well known one nor a small local one. I'm a bit Shock. Perhaps I was naive, but when I've moved previously I've done it in multiple trips with my own car so I had no idea. But that was pre-kids; now it's a big family house that has to be packed up and moved. We don't have much clutter - even the removals guy said 'blimey, you're not hoarders are you?' [proud minimalist moment] so it's not like they'd have acres of ornaments to wrap up.

Any recommendations? We are in London moving to Sussex.

The one that quoted for us came and surveyed and told me how much cubic meterage we have.

we also recently moved london to sussex - used one of the removals mentioned earlier on thread and their quote was £2800 for all in move - we chose to pack ourselves and saved nearly a grand in doing so. still think we were ripped off. but pleased with the service at both ends

We moved last year from London to Lancashire. 4 bed house with lots of stuff (1000+ vinyl LPs for example) and had packing too.

Bishops Move were excellent. it was about £2000 but we thought they were great.

So yes, £3000 does seem a bit steep but if you go for a local Sussex company it may well be cheaper than a London one.

Shock at this thread!

Op
I used a website that lets companies bid for your job, can't remember the name I'll look and get back to you!

Basically eBay in reverse. You write what you need moving, and where to, and removals men bid to do it cheaper than the others.

I had a 2 bedroomed house worth of stuff, with all the beds and furniture, plus a 5 seater sofa and recliner moved 5 miles for £60

Obviously you have more stuff than that but if you have a look at that site you will get a better idea of how much you should pay.

£160 (plus I tipped them £20 each) two men and a big van- took three trips. They were bloody brilliant.
We took two car loads of boxes and packed everything ourselves. We had a massive de-clutter before we moved too. Stayed in the same town.
We left most white goods for the new owners as our sellers left theirs for us, so that was less, but £3k?!!

samsam123 · 10/10/2014 20:30

£240-00 hiring 2 vans for 24 hours doing it myself that way its done properly

Hesaysshewaffles · 10/10/2014 21:03

I've just paid £350 for mine, moving from a 3 bed 15 miles away. I did all my packing except TV and computer etc. They were the company I liked best. They did quote me about £100
More but I haggled them down as I liked them best and that it wouldn't take as long as they said it would

Hesaysshewaffles · 10/10/2014 21:03

As a breakdown it was £60 an hour for two men and the van
