I started the below thread last year and have had so many people find it useful I thought it might be worth doing it again.

I have had a number of messages asking if I have any spaces in my classes. I'm really sorry but I have been at full capacity for some time now.

However, I do appreciate that this is a very stressful time of year for parents who have children sitting these private school assessments in January 2013. So, I'm hoping that by setting up this support group thread I can help by answering some questions you have about these assessments.

Hopefully this thread will also contain some useful insight from the experiences of parents who have already been through the process.

kaneabel78, sorry it was not a positive outcome...May I ask when the assessment with Habs was please?

PinkAngels2 · 13/01/2014 15:37

Just had an email from NLCS - was not to be!
Good luck to everyone else x

MHDad · 13/01/2014 15:40

And another thing am I the only one p*** off August born girls were called in on Saturday 2pm for the Habs assessment. Crickey, I heard one girl fell asleep on the way into school and another was driven round at 1030am in order to fall asleep in the car and get a mcdonald's for lunch.
Absolutely unbelievable that! And they seem more disorganised vs NLCS it has to be said. My DD NLCS was at 103Oam last week. Says everything about how Habs view Aug borns!!!!!

missravda · 13/01/2014 16:24

mumteacher, can you share with us what the second round at NLCS is like? Just got the good news but have no expectations. Is it one to one with the headmistress?

kaneabel78 · 13/01/2014 17:07

Miajasmine, our Habs assessment was on Wednesday last week

kaneabel78 · 13/01/2014 17:14

MHdad, somebody has to do the afternoon slot. Out of the 4 schools for my dd, she went to a slot around 2 pm in 3 of them.

MHDad · 13/01/2014 17:19

kaneabel78, is your DD an Aug born out of interest? If yes, then that's out of order. You only have to see my post to see why. Why not get the older ones in at 2pm?, not the very youngest.

Samkung · 13/01/2014 17:34

Thanks PinkAngels2. My dd didn't get called back for NLCS either. We have a 2nd for 4plus at Habs tho. Mumsteacher can you let us know what to expect at the mums interview? I don't want to let dd down!

Tableforfour · 13/01/2014 19:47

Anyone heard from Habs girls 5+ yet?

Mirage0922 · 13/01/2014 20:01

Still waiting to hear for 5 + girls from Habs .

MHDad, I see what you are saying now. My dd is Oct born so is probably one of the oldest - that explains her afternoon slots.

Bookworm79 · 13/01/2014 20:26

Hi mhdad

I was the mum who took my daughter to McDonald's before the has assessment on Saturday! So funny to read about it on a forum. Did I or my husband talk to you? Well done on NlCs call back btw. We didn't get through and still waiting to hear from Habs.

mumteacher · 13/01/2014 20:34

Nlcs emailed everyone with results either way so if you haven't heard you should ring the school.
Habs 4+ for the first time this year it seems have emailed some parents. The ones they're calling back for round2 currently have all received a phone call. So if you haven't heard - hang in there ;)
5+ Habs girls still a few more days to go before you hear.

Read non fiction books/articles/magazines.
Cutting drawing stuff like that is all done in round1.
Talk about the weather, what people look like when they are old compared to a baby? What is a violin made out of? Where does milk come from?

thank you, mumteacher, how do they run Phase 2: one to one with the teacher or in a group of girls (and if so how big)?

kaneabel78 · 13/01/2014 21:04

Thanks Mumteacher. We had our first round 4+ assessment at NLCS on the 6th and still have not heard. Anybody else who has still not heard from NLCS?

Mk123 · 13/01/2014 22:26

Thanks mumteacher but can you help us (mums) to prepare for habs 4+ second round. No clue what they will ask. I really dont want to let our kid down.

mumteacher · 14/01/2014 00:01

Mk123 are you through to round2 at Habs? Sorry if I missed your post on this earlier.

Second round for St Helen's today - so nervous as we had a no from NLCS and also feeling less certain about positive outcome from Habs. Any insight on what dd will be asked today please?

PinkAngels2 · 14/01/2014 06:29

MiaJasmine my DD1 got through round 2 (4 years ago) info might be dated but I do recall her telling me that they spoke lots to her, she played with 3 other girls -( guessing they looked at sharing and interaction) they were asking questions to see if the child stopped what they were doing and listened. They also played "simon says" gameI know it's hard try not to get to nervy!
DD1 did get an offer from St H - however went with Radlett Prep

Hope it helps and good luck today,

stikmatix · 14/01/2014 06:51

MiaJasmine - I've got 2 DDs into St H at 4+ and still not really sure what they do in the assessments! Last year DD3 said she pointed to lots of things in a book in the second round! There is no need to be able to read or write, neither of mine could read when they did the assessments and DD2 could write her name, nothing else, DD3 couldn't even write her name, so I don't think it makes a difference.

Interestingly, it seems that most of the girls who got in at 4+ last year were not tutored or prepped (mine weren't) and most didn't go to the typical prepping nurseries (mine didn't).

Good luck, and perhaps I'll see you if it's near drop off or pick up time!

horsemadmom · 14/01/2014 07:40

They do some games and a craft activity with a teacher at NLCS. Nothing that you can prepare them for so don't stress. BTW, if your DD didn't get through this time it may just be that although bright they aren't ready. The school is very good at sussing out who will thrive in that atmosphere at such a young age. They may be spectacular at 7 or 11. I have certainly seen parents who didn't get offers for their DDs at 4 whose girls got in at later stages.

kaneabel78 · 14/01/2014 09:04

missravda · 14/01/2014 09:29

kaneabel78, I was about to ask the same:)

missimperial · 14/01/2014 09:44
