The way I understood the video was that when reading a nonsense word, any plausible pronunciation would be marked correct. When reading the 'real' words, the pronunciation must be the correct one (hence Blow, rhyming with Cow being marked wrong), so it is in fact not a phonics screening at all, but 50% phonics, 50% reading.

As long as the child blends the word using a phonic strategy they'll be fine. They will have had lots of practice blending words from their two years' of daily phonics lessons. This isn't going to be a test children will be practising beforehand, it's just a progress check to highlight those having problems.

Wow. All that talk of passing and failing. Surely if 32% of your children do badly in the test then it will tell the slt to do something about the phonics teaching in yr and y1!

RWI expects all children to be 1a/2c by the end of y1, and I would imagine the check is based on that aim. Any child not performing well (for whatever reason - phonics teaching / specific difficulties) will need intervention. We are indeed finding this as our y1s reach their second year of RWI - we now have a small, core group who need extra intervention (in addition to their daily rwi sessions) which we are starting to address.

There seems to be a lot of panic
