Level 3s at end Year 2

We've just had stats results for DS1 who is at the end of Year 2. DS received levels 3 in all except one area where he got level 2a. I really don't know what this means except that it is above average. Does this just mean he takes after DH (ie too clever for his own good)? I wish the school would explain these things! Basically I just want some explanation - I did google but nothing much came up to help explain what level 3 means.

Yes 3 is above "average", so well done to your DS.
So what do you want to know? The school has given you the End Of Key Stage One level that is teacher assessment based on the compulsory tasks and tests (know as SATs) and teacher assessments. You should have a comparision with national figures as part of the assessment results. The school report should detail what this means in reality e.g. strong at writing; can write in correctly punctuated sentences and now needs to work on using papragraphs in their writing.

You should also have a comparison table which compares your school's Y2 assessment with schools nationally (in 2010).

What do you want the school to explain, exactly?

I'm not sure really what I wanted to know. He does have a school report which details writing, reading, art, PE etc. There's nothing about the school's Y2 stats assessment with schools nationally. It's just that I've never really come across this scoring system before. I guess if I check the school website it might have some info. about the school's results and national results.

I'm not worried about him being too clever :) he's special to me however he does at school. In fact my favourite bit on the report was his teacher's comment about how he'd conquered his fear of the equipment in PE - that's a huge thing for him as he's not good at physical activities such as PE and gets very nervous about climbing things and heights. I'm hugely proud of him for that :)

But what else could it mean?

It's a statutory obligation to provide the comparisons when reporting to parents.

dd2 got level 3s in all areas at the end of year 2, it means your ds is bright and doing well. Don't stress

malcominthemiddle I don't know. I'm just being dim, I was at school at the ages before sats and all that stuff and we only ever did get As, Bs, Cs at senior school, or just housepoints at infant and junior school!

Feenie I am proud :) I have to say DS's school is pretty rubbish at communication and keeping parents informed about various things. It took me a while to work out what Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 were when DS1 started at school.

2a at end of year 2 is working at the higher end of the expected level

Level 3 is above the expected level

2b is pretty spot on

and so on...

Yes-2b is national expectation, so anything above that is great. Was it writing she got the 2a in, out of interest?

I would expect my school to keep pushing, although we are fee paying and very academic AND the kids go straight through in our school from 4 to 18 (so KS3 teachers on hand to provide work). I've no clue about other schools, I'm sorry....

LeQueen there is a really huge breadth of knowledge that a good school could start working on with a highly able child

They go on to level 6, LeQueen and yes, they are taught secondary school stuff.

The saddest thing in the world to me is that the national expectation of year 9 (yes the year before GCSEs) is high 5 to low 6

the national expectation is laughable

however to me primary is to learn the love of learning so grades should really be taken with a pinch of salt

My personal experience with my own children is that they have done ok at KS1 but have learnt to apply themselves and work under their own steam and love school and socialise and they do much better towards the end of KS2 and through to KS3

I was befuddled by my DDs levels. She got one 3 and it was in Science! We're the most unscientific people ever and I fel bad that I have never done any home experiments with her..when she obviously likes it! She was all 2bs and one 2a for the rest...so I'm qute happy.They're so young yet...not worth worrying.
