Level 3s at end Year 2

We've just had stats results for DS1 who is at the end of Year 2. DS received levels 3 in all except one area where he got level 2a. I really don't know what this means except that it is above average. Does this just mean he takes after DH (ie too clever for his own good)? I wish the school would explain these things! Basically I just want some explanation - I did google but nothing much came up to help explain what level 3 means.

To be honest, i am not sure on the actual statistics. However, the average progress a child should make is 7 sub levels in KS1 and 5 in KS2. Based on that, if a child was 1a at end KS 1, they could reach Level 5 by end of KS 3 technically and therefore be expected to get C's at GCSE. However as has already been stated the jump between levels is much bigger up the scale and in addition it would depend on many other factors such as any SEN issues and how they are dealt with etc. Despite what the government would have you believe, children are human beings and no amount of statistics can predict how each child will develop as they grow and experience life. Every child is different. Sometimes statistics add up, sometimes they don't. Every child who walks into my classroom is encouraged to aim high regardless of what the statistics say Smile.

chilli he sounds like a bright child to me Smile. Even if he doesn't get into top set in Year 8 ( which i suspect he will), there is always the chance of moving up at the end of Year 8.

thanks. Yes, the high school here do move them around in the sets, within the years as well as at the end of the year. I'm sure that it'll be fine, just that she asked me the question so I said I'd find out.

The expectation is that children make 2 NC levels progress in each Key Stage
KS1 -2
KS2 -4
KS3 -6
KS4 -8

Thanks again Ellie. It's good to know there could be light for some of the struggling children at the end of the tunnel! I have a couple of children who have ended this year on a 1a (having exceeded their targets). They've worked like little Trojans all year and I just hope that their future years in school are kind to them.
