OK, maybe I'm a snob...

We've moved house recently and took DD to her new school this morning. The school had given me a reasonably good impression, it's small, the kids and staff seemed friendly... but having seen the parents in the playground I am frankly appalled. One mum had no teeth! I know I should give it a chance and all that but I just felt we were in the wrong place. We pass a lovely school which is very highly regarded on the 1.2 mile drive to DD's school, which we are on the waiting list for but only 14th (though each year has an intake of 120). Everyone going there looked lovely and wholesome...

Is it possible to appeal to the nearer school (which is less than mile from our house)?? What can we do??? We moved house because the school situation was difficult where we lived before. There it was be Catholic or suffer...

I know I am a snob and am going to get a bollocking on here. But I just don't feel like I'm going to fit in. I know no-one in our new town and was hoping school would help provide me with a new network of friends but it's not looking hopeful.

Not much to say really. You will just have to wait until a place comes up at the school you are on the waiting list for.

Maybe you could also try giving the school the benefit of the doubt..see how it goes..its only early days yet. If you are still unhappy you can alsways HE if this is possible until a place becomes available.

it's all about your dd making friends
and people with no teeth can make a perfectly good friend

Yeah, I'd appeal and see if you can get a guarantee that all the parents have their own teeth.

Have you checked the teeth of all the parents at your preferred school?

Perhaps worth considering the purpose of school. My understanding is that it's to provide an education for your children (in partnership with you), not provide you 'with a new network of friends'.

Maybe schools should publish the results of the parents teeth survey,as well as sats results, just so you know before you apply

Give it a chance its just the first day, dont judge a book by its cover. Our school yard has a good mix of parents from all sorts of different life styles, have to say i prefer the rough bunch myself they were the only ones that made me feel welcome when i moved my daughter so the school, the other stuck up mums took over a year before they spoke to me or even glanced in my direction .

why post threads like this? most of us have thoughts like this but it is unpleasant to voice them.

if the toothless ratio was large at dd's school would feel disquiet, fortunately we have good nhs dentists in this area so are spared this sort of discomfort!

Give it a chance. You're panicking over first impressions. See if your DDs happy there. See what she's learning. Don't rush into anything because of some poor woman's dental misfortunes.

Agree with the ExGoat. Many, many MNetter are crashing snobs (am including myself there so am allowed to say it ) but you're not allowed to talk about it. What did you expect everyone to say? That Toothy Lady should be chased back to the council estate with a pitchfork?

Anyway, there are horrible people at every extreme - posh horrors too. Give it a chance and stay on the waiting list for somewhere else if it makes you happy.

I know exactly what you mean. I put up with our school (nary a tooth to be seen) until one day one parent bellowed through the window at pick up time that his child should "tell that fucking fat cow" (the teacher) to hurry up.

I am sure there are lots of lovely no teeth Tennants Super drinking parents, simply dozens, but I have yet to meet one.

the parents without teeth /facial tattos / audition for jeremy kyle are the ones that stand out...there will be some perfectly nice parents that blend into the background, you just need to seek them out

Wow, thought at least one 'crashing snob' would be along to back me up. Is it wrong not to want your child to go to school where all the parental role models are fat/ tattooed/ smoking or look like they don't care. I want my child to go to school with ambitions!

My DD's nursery is not in the best of areas, but the staff are fantastic, the kids are nice and most of the parents are nice too (there are some horrible ones, posh and not posh) Don't judge a book by it's cover.

No teeth? Wow that's pretty medieval. How is the dental work on the other parents? Met anyone with suppurating boils and an onion poultice strapped to his armpit?

Onthe plus side, maybe the toothless one is a top class gurner. She could be a celebrity.

It's important make friends. Frankly our kids are at a school where I don't have much in common with most of the mums. Friendly enough for a bit of playground chat and pleasant people but at their old school in London I had lots of mates to quaff wine with.

The people round here are just too damn lovely and wholesome for my habits.
