When do girls reach adult height

marg12345 · 10/12/2018 22:36

Is it true that most girls stop growing two years after their first period?

Nope.

PipGoesPop · 10/12/2018 22:39

Well that cleared that up! Grin

shaggedthruahedgebackwards · 10/12/2018 22:39

It's not an exact science but it is pretty accurate for the majority of girls IME

Might not be the case for girls who hit puberty very young (i.e. under 10)

EmmaGrundyForPM · 10/12/2018 22:42

My understanding is that, although girls can keep on growing for up to 2 years after their periods start, the reality is that that growth is usyally minimal and that girls rarely grow very much after starting puberty.

I might be wrong though!

DramaAlpaca · 10/12/2018 22:45

Not the case for me. I didn't reach my adult height until I was 18.

user1494670108 · 10/12/2018 22:47

My dd started hers a year ago and hasn't grown since

marg12345 · 10/12/2018 22:48

And what age did you take your first period at if you don't mind me asking

OP posts:
marg12345 · 10/12/2018 22:50

I am asking this question as my DD took hers at age 11she is now 12 1/2 and is 5.6, she is really struggling with her height as she is so much taller than her peers and I am hoping most of her growth is finished

OP posts:
sweetkitty · 10/12/2018 22:54

My DD1 started her period at 13, she hasn’t grown much since she’s 5 3.
DD2 started hers at 12 (there is 18 months between them DD2 started 3 months after DD1) DD2 is 5 1 I reckon

The thing is we measure the kids every 6 months and DD2 has always been taller than DD1 at every age. DD2 has size 5 feet compared to DD1s size 3. I thought DD2 would be taller if notbthe same size as DD1 but she doesn’t seem to be taking that spurt, she’s 13 next month?

Holidayshopping · 10/12/2018 22:54

I have never heard the phrase ‘take your first period’ before-I wish someone would take mine away sometimes Grin.

I started mine at 14 and DD was 13-neither of us grew much after then.

CarrieBlu · 10/12/2018 23:00

Started my periods aged 9, stopped growing age 11/12.

LooksBetterWithAFilter · 10/12/2018 23:01

Dd was 11 and hadn’t grown much she’s 15 now. Couple of inches maybe 3 at the most. She’s 5’9 same as me she’s tall but not abnormally tall when you see her with the other girls in her year.

canigetaliein · 10/12/2018 23:06

I grew late, was average height all the way from toddler to tween. Went up to 5ft 9 at 15, period was 12 I think.

Starbucks1999 · 10/12/2018 23:10

This has been true for my mum, me and my daughter. Began periods at 9/10 and reached our full height of 5foot by the time we were 12.

marg12345 · 10/12/2018 23:10

Can you recall what height she was at 11 ?

OP posts:
shaggedthruahedgebackwards · 10/12/2018 23:15

I think you are worrying unnecessarily OP

5'6" is a very ordinary height for a young woman, even if she grows another inch or two she won't be excessively tall

canigetaliein · 10/12/2018 23:26

My close friend is 5ft 10 & was always the “tallest girl in her class” & she’s very self conscious about it even now in her 30s & doesn’t wear heels etc. I don’t feel particularly tall even when wearing 3” heels as it was never an issue so I can understand your concerns. Although I thought that people who grow fast when younger tend to slow down.

marg12345 · 10/12/2018 23:38

I am hoping that is the case , just hate to see her feel so self conscious, she is totally beautiful but at that age they just don't want to stand out. Luckily she is very sporty and this has helped her grow in confidence

I'm 5'6'' and am very average height though was tall at 11 but not at 15. Make her proud of her height. My bf is 6 foot and carries it amazingly.

PickAChew · 10/12/2018 23:43

I only grew another inch, after my first period, then lost it again, by the time I was 40.

marg12345 · 10/12/2018 23:47

Thanks everyone i appreciate the comments

redastherose · 11/12/2018 00:09

Started mine at 13 and was 5'3" or 5'4" stoped growing at 17 at 5'7" (seem to have lost 1/2" since then now 48!

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 11/12/2018 00:24

DD started her period a couple of days after her 11th birthday and I'd say she'd definitely stopped growing by the age of 12/13. She's just under 5'8" with size 7 feet and has been like that for a few years now (she's 15) much to her disgust - she's the only one who's still shorter than me albeit not by much. She spent yr6 and yr7 as the tallest in her class out of the boys and the girls but now she's just one of the taller girls - doesn't stand out particularly.

marg12345 · 11/12/2018 00:39

Thanks for sharing , it's reasurring to hear , I think she has definitely slowed down and hoping maybe only a few inches to grow if any, she definitely looks like a young woman , rather than a young girl, but like you say by 15 I am sure she will feel less tall , once the boys at least catch up !

OP posts:
CarrieBlu · 11/12/2018 07:55

I was 5’5 by 11/12 and have never grown again since then. I remember being the tallest amongst my friends for years and now I’m small compared to most of them!
