When do girls reach adult height

Is it true that most girls stop growing two years after their first period?

I did most of my growing age 10-12 (5’0” to 5’6” ish), started period age 12 and crept up more slowly to finishing height of 5’8”.

5’6” is a great height to be! As is 5’8” actually. I never wished to be smaller. (Especially now clothes shops do different leg lengths as standard... bit more challenging in the early 90s as I recall) Young women are taller these days and her peers will soon catch up. Pay her lots of compliments - they will sink in even if she pulls a face.

Started my period at 10 and never grew another inch. I'm 5ft 2 with size 3 feet. My older sister started at 17 and is 5ft 10 with size 8 feet.

BackforGood · 18/12/2018 23:18

My dd2 is 17 and has grown a lot in the last 12 - 18months.

5'6" isn't tall for my generation, and most of the next generation will be taller than their parents.

BumDisease · 18/12/2018 23:23

Tbh I've never heard of this theory but I started my periods at 10 and haven't grown since I was about 12... I'm about 5 ft 3!

SwayingInTime · 18/12/2018 23:26

I worry about the opposite a lot, dd is 13, periods for 2 years and seems stuck at about 5 foot tall. Her feet haven’t grown either. I know it’s fine but this seems very small indeed.

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 18/12/2018 23:30

I’m 5 foot 6. It is on the tall side of average but very much “average”. I’d have quite liked another inch or two to be honest.

Racecardriver · 18/12/2018 23:31

Not from my experience (of going to a girls school). Most girls seemed to mostly stop growing around that point but still grew a little bit thereafter. I had my first period at twelve. My last growth spurt at 14 but continued to grow until 16.

Racecardriver · 18/12/2018 23:32

Also don’t worry about your DDs height. Being tall is definitely an advantage. I’m 5’10 and my height has been nothing but a benefit.

PerfectlyImperfectx · 18/12/2018 23:34

Well I’m going against the grain to say that I seem to have grown somewhere between 23-26 years old. I was always at the lower end of 5’4 but I was measured yesterday and am 5’5. Although I started my periods at 11, the day after my grandmother died (stress?) and my feet have been a 3-4 since I was 10...

Mumof1andacat · 18/12/2018 23:35

I stopped a growing at about 12. Started my period at 11. I made it to the dizzy heights of 5 foot!

mammmamia · 18/12/2018 23:35

I was like a PP 5’5” by 12, started periods then and didn’t grow any more.

DontPanic42 · 18/12/2018 23:44

I haven't heard this before, but I continued grow after I was 18 (only an inch but then I'm only 5.3 so it all counts) and started periods at 12

MadameGazelleIsMyHomegirl · 18/12/2018 23:45

Periods age 13, I was about 5ft 5. Stopped growing age 19, at 5ft 11. So plenty of growing still happened after periods!

MumUnderTheMoon · 18/12/2018 23:59

No we aren't fully grown until we are about 21.

tinytreefrog · 21/12/2018 07:04

My dd1 started her periods at and I dot. Think she's grown more than an inch since, her feet definitely haven't grown at all. She's 14 and 5ft5.5 or so. In primary she was the tallest girl. All through year seven she towered above most of her friends, year eight they started to catch up and now in year nine she's pretty much middle of the road in terms of height.

tinytreefrog · 21/12/2018 07:05

At 12, sorry it's early!

SnuggyBuggy · 21/12/2018 07:08

I think it's the rise in oestrogen that causes the growth plates of the bones to fuse (used to work for a paediatric endocrinologist) so given that some girls have anovulatory periods or irregular cycles for a while after starting it won't be a 100% perfect guide.

SnuggyBuggy · 21/12/2018 07:09

In my case I started at 11 and I think I stopped growing at 13, was gutted as I assumed I'd continue growing until 16

MeetOnTheSIedge · 21/12/2018 07:10

I'm hoping not or my DD is going to be absolutely tiny.

rabbitfoodadvocate · 21/12/2018 07:13

I stopped at 16. 5'10 and a bit. My mum is tiny and always told me how fantastic my height was so I've always loved it.

explodingkitten · 21/12/2018 07:18

I started my period age 12 and I think I stopped growing around age 15, although growth was slow. I'm 5'8" and I like my length. I'm not seen as very tall or anything but I do live in the Netherlands so it doesn't feel as tall because People are taller here on average. I did feel tall when I visited China and Dennark (!?!) comparing to the men there.

ImogenTubbs · 21/12/2018 08:45

I had my first period aged 12. I was 5ft 9 by the age of 11. Am now 6ft. I know it's tough to be different from your peers, but 5ft 6 isn't really that tall.

Rayna37 · 21/12/2018 15:56

I've never heard this before but it's true for me: started at 11, been on the short side of average since 13. Other friends who mainly started later grew later too, so lots of those who were much shorter than me at 12-14 eventually caught up or overtook.

typoqueen · 17/01/2019 19:04

oh god i hope it is true, we have just had 1 year of periods so far and my 11 year old is already 5ft 6in

Pinkkahori · 17/01/2019 19:09

I have the opposite concern with my dd. She'll be 13 in a few months and started her period a few months ago and she still isn't 5ft tall. All her friends are inches taller and she hates being short.
I'm short and DH is about average so we aren't expecting her to be tall but hoping she grows a few more inches for her sake.
