I don’t know why another thread hasn’t been created yet , so here you go. Now as we prep ourselves to the peak of this pandemic, let’s all face it together and appreciate how fragile our lives are and how we need each other to survive and flourish.

What do you think of this idea? DS's teacher has sent an email to say that as the town library and school library are closed, she will set up a "class library". The kids have to read and log their books online, books get points and the points go towards their end of year mark. Clearly some kids have read all their books at home!

It is optional. But the idea is you write which books you have available into a the class spreadsheet, someone requests it by entering their name in spreadsheet and come to collect it. You leave book outside, they return it via letterbox.

There's no mention of warning the virus can survive on surfaces etc, I think it's pretty silly idea...

(We have easily over 1000 books, so we're good for a while Grin )

Sprayitall · 28/03/2020 19:51

@preponderings no I won’t do that given the situation now. May be try reading library online and share what they read?

Dd keeps getting upset that covid is something serious and cried that she wants everyone in the family to be alright and live longer. It’s very upsetting to see kids working themselves out so much over this and I felt so upset and angry because we can’t help the situation in anyway. I have tried to calm her in many ways over the last few days, hugs, cuddles, read the dotty nurse book to her etc but she gets into this mood because she can’t see her friends . I have tried contacting parents of her besties to arrange whatsapp video calls but no one has bothered to even reply. I wouldn’t blame them though. If only we could time travel and stop the bat soup guy..

the last line was just out of sheer exasperation as a parent and isn’t meant to offend anyone., i’m just longing for the normal days to return

Spray can you set up a whole class meet up on one of the apps? If you have a whole year 2 WhatsApp or something?

lexloofah · 28/03/2020 20:19

Thanks Sprayitall will wait for fresh mangoes or look for tinned ones. we used to live in the Caribbean and have fond memories of mango season, the ones in the shop here are not a patch on those, was hoping frozen would be good for smoothies but who wants a fishy smoothie?

I wouldn't do the book thing, unnecessary risk and unnecessary travel, shame for those that might not have loads of books at home but some free ebooks online from libraries or listen on audible

ofwarren · 28/03/2020 20:48

Hi, just checking in
I'm on day 5 of the virus and doing ok
It's really quite unpleasant though.
One good thing is that after registering my son as vulnerable, our local council rang and we will be getting one of the free weekly food parcels.
The preps have taken a beating but I don't know what we would have done without them.
I haven't read the full thread so I hope everyone is doing well. I'm trying to keep away from the news as you can imagine.

doneaflit · 28/03/2020 20:59

Hi @ofwarren. I wish you a speedy recovery. Did you do the private test, then?

I've been off for a while - needed to focus away from all this reality and sort my head out.

ofwarren · 28/03/2020 21:03

Didn't get the private test. None in stock and I don't know where else to get one from. There is no mistaking these symptoms though. It's like a red hot poker down my throat. Feels like an elephant is sat on my back and that I've swallowed glass. My youngest just has a cough and is not ill at all. He's having to isolate with me upstairs. He's got free access to screens and he's been as happy as Larry 😂

lexloofah · 28/03/2020 21:09

Ofwarren, glad you managed to check in. Have appreciated your updates on here and the corona worried thread, Sounds rough (and nothing like flu!) does paracetemol take the edge off at all? Thank goodness for screens.

Sprayitall · 28/03/2020 22:01

@Onceuponatimethen Yes, dd has her dance and music classes running in videoconference .. it’s zoom.us and it’s free

@lexloofah I have fond memories of the mango tree in our house too. Most of my childhood summers were spent climbing them, picking mangoes and snoozing on a nylon kids hammock that was tied across a mango and guava tree.. with kids having big jugs of iced mango milk shakes to cool us off.. we used to pick atleast 3 large sacks of mangoes 😀 The mangoes that fall down when a squirrel tries to grab and eat is supposed to be the tastiest. In the early evenings mango trees will all be visited by lot of Indian ring necked parrots. A beautiful sight to see when sunsets and they all fly back to their nests. I miss the Indian summer, monsoon says and living in the tropics.

@ofwarren Glad to see you checking in. Keep safe and take care. That doesn’t sound good at all and nothing like flu. I’m wondering how did you even manage to catch it at the first instance .. that too with all the precautions in place! Does paracetamol help? Did you try zincovit lozenge as someone suggested here ??

OP posts:
Whatthefoxgoingon · 28/03/2020 22:05

Get well soon ofwarren!

ofwarren · 28/03/2020 22:06

I can only have caught it in the dentist room or been really unlucky and it was on post or a parcel.
Paracetamol does help, as does hot sweet tea.
I never managed to get the zinc lozenges first time round but I found some back in stock in Amazon today.
It's the jittery shakes that are the worst. It's like when you go into shock or after child birth for some people. Horrible out of control feeling.
It comes in waves though thankfully, so you do get a break from it.

Weedsnseeds1 · 28/03/2020 22:20

A couple of months ago I was working in Mauritius, of course it was dark when I got back every night, but I sat on the balcony with a glass of rum and listened to the fruit bats smashing into the mango trees and squabbling with each other!

Weedsnseeds1 · 28/03/2020 22:24

They aren't elegant creatures! My colleagues laughed when I explained a pipistrelle bat here weighs 5g

Graphista · 28/03/2020 22:53

I remember those paper dress up dolls great fun.

Op not just your locality with problems, we’ve had idiots here too mainly older teens still going to the notorious trouble spots, drinking and being lairy. Local police now (finally!) said they’ll be fining and even arresting the parents if they don’t keep them home! And yes the parents know they’re bloody well driving them to the trouble spots!

@ofwarren glad you popped your head in so to speak. Hope you’re feeling much better soon.

AlohaMolly · 29/03/2020 00:36

Another one saying I hope you feel better really soon @ofwarren. Do you have enough paracetamol?

Have you seen the news? A letter from Boris to arrive on our footsteps telling us tougher measures necessary.

I’m twitching so hard - I want to take the £50 on my credit card and go to Tesco. We’ve mostly still got a good stash of actual food and I still think we could get three/four weeks with nothing in/no one out... but I didn’t stock milk. I also severely underestimated how many ‘treats’ we would eat.

I worry about entertaining our three year old too. We live in the mountains and he’s been living for his daily bike ride.

I want to go and buy milk, a tonne of sweets/chocolate/cake and crafty bits Sad

What do we think the tougher measures will look like?

I’m terrified but hope so badly it’s true inall
Honesty - the article I read said they could keep deaths as low as 5,700?

footprintsintheslow · 29/03/2020 09:55

@AlohaMolly can you get a few craft supplies delivered to you via amazon?

BrieAndChilli · 29/03/2020 10:20

i was saying to DH the other day that I’m so glad we have so much ‘stuff’ we have probably 1000’s of books, tons of dvds (if streaming services go down) loads of board games, probably millions of Lego pieces, lots of craft stuff and science sets and stuff.
Some people I know literally have nothing, no books or anything and I wonder how they are managing to entertain themselves during this! I always used to be jealous that thier houses were so tidy (due to having no stuff) and no I’m not!

IndecentFeminist · 29/03/2020 11:05

Looking at the figures last night, Germany have had over 56000 cases. Yet 'only' 421 deaths.

How have they managed that? Is it better/earlier testing? More hospital capability?

Weedsnseeds1 · 29/03/2020 11:12

I think they went hard with contact tracing and isolating in Germany

MrsWhites · 29/03/2020 11:33

Hi all, hope you are well.

@ofwarren so sorry to hear you have caught the virus, it sounds awful, hope you get to the end of it and feel better soon!

Had to nip out yesterday morning to get some fresh supplies, fruit and veg mostly which makes me think I really should start growing my own but our garden really doesn’t have the space without cutting into the lawn. Anyway, queued for 50 minutes to get in, everyone keeping to the social distancing rules outside but the security on the queue said the shop was mostly empty but people in the fresh aisles were stopping to chat etc so they weren’t allowed to let anyone else in. What is wrong with people, get in, get your food and go home!

It really did make me wonder what life will be like post virus, will it make people more antisocial in general do we think?

lexloofah · 29/03/2020 11:49

People stopping to chat, guess they are nervous and lonely and it is a hard habit to break, So kind of understandable even though it is silly and frustrating and added to the wait for everyone

What is not understandable is BIL and family isolating as one in the house has symptoms and MIL in her 70s has been dropping shopping off for them FFS I give up!

Sprayitall · 29/03/2020 11:55

@brie Thankfully I never got around to throw away or donate dd’s old toys. I can never afford to buy everything new now but I’ve always been jealous of mums keeping a really tidy home. I know a mum who has 3 kids but her house is so tidy you can just take pictures and upload it in house beautiful right away. I can’t for the life of me think how they do it. I honestly think they are Mary poppins in disguise. I have one dd and my living room looks like it is a toy obstacle course +hidden object game together. Finding the remote is always the end of the day final challenge and toughest. Those who keep their cool amidst all this wins! 😂
@AlohaMolly You can try hobbycraft if they are still delivering. Amazon I wouldn’t try now as I heard the delivery guys are licking the parcels too and were caught in few cameras.
@ofwarren did you try contacting the dentist practice to inform them? Because if it’s from there then they would be infecting many more. It’s better they all close down and go into self isolation. Parcels/posts chances should be low because if it’s posts you can ask the postman if he has any symptoms anyway.

ordered something from the health food shop three weeks ago and have forgotten about that totally. I was sitting thinking there were no deliveries due in the next couple of weeks as dd is having a cough and we are self isolating but it’s now turning up into split parcels one by one. I’m tired of wiping everything that comes into the house. One pack of dettol wipes came with my grocery delivery yesterday so that was a good thing . Never thought seeing a pack of dettol can excite me this much ever in my life. 😅
