Prepping for a Pandemic... 15

A lot of us have been here before. We Prepped for Brexit. Some of us are Heathcare workers. We prepare for the worst every day. It's difficult to predict what will happen in our lives. In our lifetime. Will we get Cancer? Will a huge meteorite wipe the world out?

One thing is for sure, this new virus is either affecting us, or is going to affect us all very soon. You are all already onboard. I hope you are prepared and much as you can be. And in the meantime this thread is here to support us all.

This week will bring many new challenges. We are almost certain to have some sort of lockdown. Like other parts of Europe. We aren't special. We aren't different. We are all
fragile souls. But I hope we live to tell the tale.

God Speed.

Have they stopped including the number of deaths in the figures?

This seems to be today’s update:

Number of cases
As of 9am on 16 March 2020, 44,105 people have been tested in the UK, of which 42,562 were confirmed negative and 1,543 were confirmed as positive.

VenetoResident · 16/03/2020 14:13

@Sprayitall

I saw this earlier twitter.com/chicoharlan/status/1239172861899800576?s=21

It's the first 803 people to die. Two people under 50.

But that's to be expected. I'm trying to put this nicely. The older you are the quicker you will die after symptom onset. Deaths of younger people may still be happening from those infected at the same date as the older people.

There are 1523 positives under 50 (of 13882 at that point). People seriously ill enough to be tested. Who may have life changing repercussions from the infection.

@lexloofah - when I've taken the DC to A&E they've been very interested in actual temps and patterns of temps. My 'he was hot so I gave paracetamol' was looked down on harshly. Italians are very concerned about temperature and illness.

Sprayitall · 16/03/2020 14:45

@Snugglepumpkin @Readyme has a valid point there. Personally I would like dc to attend school as I feel it’s nourishing her in so many ways which I doubt I could have provided her in home schooling. It’s absolutely one’s personal choice and as parents I think we should do our best for them and provide a nourishing environment with a solid foundation to face life. I am just learning about home schooling here as I have never heard of it where I grew up and it’s all new to me. I would love to have first hand information about this as i don’t know there is a Facebook group or any local groups that will offer support. I am not going to deregister dc for now but it’s good to prepped anyway as this covid is expected to last longer and I don’t want my dc to miss out on education for longer because of that.

BanKittenHeels · 16/03/2020 14:48

Is everyone worn out or has this thread started to slow significantly for a reason?

PancakeFiend · 16/03/2020 14:48

@Sprayitall and anyone else who’d like it, this is the Facebook group for families temporarily home educating due to the pandemic. Hopefully I’ve made it clicky.

Sprayitall · 16/03/2020 14:51

@Miaowse how many deaths haven’t been reported there isn’t it?? looks dodgy to me but the positives crossing 1500 and still having to send kids to school is ridiculous.

tryingtoprep · 16/03/2020 14:51

Surely they have to include deaths in the figures? I do hope we start seeing robust challenges from the media and (what's left of) the Opposition about UK policy. Very soon!

@MoonlightMistletoe my aloe vera seems to do well with indirect sunlight. It lives indoors.

We really need to follow suit of the rest of the world and go into lockdown. One of my elderly relatives is going to the shops today because they think it's not as bad here (compared to other countries). They think that's why we don't have lockdown. I agree with a PP. Too many people won't self isolate unless it's mandatory. Unfortunately the UK government's policy of downplay, minimalise, and othering means too few people understand the reality.

Re thermometers. Are the non digital forehead strips any good?

Sprayitall · 16/03/2020 14:52

@PancakeFiend thank you for sharing. Will check that out.

Sprayitall · 16/03/2020 14:53

@BanKittenHeels I think after the whatsapp group was started the forum is a bit slow. I am not in the whatsapp group though

Readyme · 16/03/2020 14:55

@KatyMac I am sorry your DH friend's are not being supportive. It's a stressful enough time pornographers minimising your worry.

Orchidflower1 · 16/03/2020 14:55

Well, mr orchid has apologised about being rude and nasty about my prepping and general worrying over the situation and then he contributed to the pasta panic buying.

He went to the little costcutter round the corner from his work and phoned me up to ask if needed anything! After several no’s from me he bought a bag of pasta “ because I feel like I should get something” 🤷‍♀️

Readyme · 16/03/2020 15:01

@Orchidflower1 at least he went to a local shop! The amount of people that I have seen saying the can't get xyz ANYWHERE then admit they had only gone to big chain supermarkets.

Sprayitall · 16/03/2020 15:03

@tryingtoprep exactly. One of my dh’s colleague had to work from home as his dc was having a cough and not going to school - so he twittered he was self isolating as a family for the next 7 days but the school has responded privately and asked them to take down the tweet as it might unnecessarily cause panic around and it’s not even that serious yet. Same way I was asked to react proportionately and send dd to school if she was well. What is reacting proportionately For covid at this instance anyway??

AlohaMolly · 16/03/2020 15:04

I didn’t know there was a WhatsApp group Grin

I feel a bit fatigued tbh, I don’t know if it will even be a relief if the test comes back negative tomorrrow because then I’ll just be waiting for the next time!

Wales’ figures are released a lot earlier it seems like? Another confirmed death and 30 more cases.

Reastie · 16/03/2020 15:05

@84TinsOfBeans just went in Clark’s page but measurer is out of stock. Will look online later when Ds stops moaning and get another brand.

Legoandloldolls · 16/03/2020 15:06

I'm outside my dd infant school. The car park has 2/3 less cars in. I'm confident about 1/2 the parents has just thought sod it and pulled their kids out

MrsWhites · 16/03/2020 15:08

I’m feeling so confused. Are they trying to reassure us with lower figures in the last few days? We all know it’s because they aren’t testing enough people. How are we to believe they can adequately deal with the pandemic as a whole if they can’t even coordinate testing!

I have a feeling the death toll is very scary today and that’s why it’s been left off the initial figures released 😢

MrsWhites · 16/03/2020 15:09

@Legoandloldolls I’m also outside school, parking on the street is much easier today and was this morning too! I think attendance figures are very low!

Orchidflower1 · 16/03/2020 15:11

@Readyme it’s just crazy how we’ve had plenty of pasta in and soap and wash liquid but he felt he had to get something by way of apology! Some women get flowers - I get penne pasta!

nightshade1 · 16/03/2020 15:12

Does anyone know when bumbling Boris is due to do his address?
Feeling oddly calm today- it's a weird feeling

tryingtoprep · 16/03/2020 15:12

Didn't know about WhatsApp either @AlohaMolly. For the best though. I already spend too far much time on MN! Hope you feel better very soon.

@Sprayitall That's very worrying. It's dangerous and negligent to downplay it. Puts so many at risk. Of course people shouldn't panic but being aware and calmly prepared is not the same at all. The WHO advises people in at risks groups to practice social distancing. I'd say following their advice is proportionate. Why wouldn't it be.

wherearemychickens · 16/03/2020 15:16

Why haven't they released the death numbers today then?

Whatthefoxgoingon · 16/03/2020 15:20

Very fishy indeed.

wheresmymojo · 16/03/2020 15:24

I am doing my first community duty tomorrow.

Taking someone with chronic illnesses who has been bunkered down for a blood test appt. She has serious health anxiety so will be doing out my car with dettol before I take her and can trial run my mask and disposable glove combo.

Will post a pic of my mask when I've popped it on Grin

JustMeAndMyTins · 16/03/2020 15:26

@Orchidflower1 I think that’s really sweet!

@BanKittenHeels I’ve no idea about the WhatsApp group but the board definitely has a different energy about it now.
