How do I cope??
Have googled but I can't find comparable stories. All others involve babies twice the weight.
Am struggling to be sure I am doing the right thing putting my baby boy through all this.
He has grade 4 IVH & grade 2 so have no idea of quality of life at the end of all this.
Having said that he has fought for 10 days so far. The other parents in NICU have heavier babies and not the bleeds so feel like their problems are trivial compared to my baby boys.
I feel very weepy even though I am trying to put a brave face on.
How much more can my baby boy take? I can't hold him and I just want to tell him it will be ok but I don't know that it will.

UnrequitedSkink · 08/07/2013 22:53

That's lovely, hopefully he'll come on in leaps and bounds now. What a little star.

Yey for Oliver!!!! Thst's fantastic news shiv x Grin

MichaelaS · 10/07/2013 11:44

OH my word, how did I miss this thread for so long? I thought I had it on watch but obviously not. So sorry I disappeared and just at the time when things were looking grim.

I am so very pleased he is on CPAP and seems to have turned the corner. Sounds like his hernia was the problem all along. How many weeks total on the vent did he have? My DS1 did 9 which we thought was a lot but I think Oliver might have broken the record?

It is lovely to read about your kangaroo cuddles and him rooting for a nipple, now he is a bit stronger it sounds like this behavior at least is very neurologically normal!

Please keep us updated and I pray he goes from strength to strength from now onwards. Xxx

Well done Oliver!

Ds has a friend who was born at 26 weeks in a lay by - she is 6 now and tallest girl in her class and is absolutely lovely :)

TwentyTinyToes · 10/07/2013 19:16

Moving to a hot cot is such a wonderful step. Free access to kisses and nuzzles makes a big difference. Enjoy! Glad to hear about all this good progress.

Saturday is weigh day and Oliver now weighs 1.565kg which is 3 & a half pounds. He's also 3 months old.
He's still in NICU but still on cpap and I have been having him out for cuddles every day. Not having any time off cpap as they want him to convert all his calories to weight gain.
Me and DH are staying at home together for the first time since he was born. Just me, him and the dog. It's nice but odd, like there's something missing.
Had our weekly review with the consultant and Oliver's left ventricular index is up quite a bit. WWaiting for this weeks headscan. Hope it's an anomaly.
Overall a good week. Xx

Fantastic news, well done Oliver. Hope the head scan is nothing to worry about. Mx

mymatemax · 14/07/2013 18:18

Wow, sounds like he's going from strength to strength. I hope the scan is Ok, but just remember even if it shows something significant it doesn't always mean serious disability.
I hope you enjoyed your night at home... I bet you were itching to get back to Oliver today though. xx

Supershiv1 · 14/07/2013 20:50

And today brought the news that Oliver is now on 3 hourly feeds and out of the hot cot, into a normal cot.
I might pinch myself!
