Abortion on the 17/1 and positive pregnancy test?

Hi all,
I had a medical abortion at 6 weeks on the 17/1 this year. I had the mirena inserted on the 1/2. I was told to do a pregnancy on the 7th and the 14th. The one on the 7th was faint but there was x2 lines which to be honest I expected however I have just done the second one as I forgot on the 14th and it’s darker then the one on the 7th??? I’ve rang Marie stopes and she’s just informed me that the mirena isn’t 100% effective from day one and I should be using condoms for the first 7 days! NO ONE informed me about this and i assumed it was effective from insertion just like the Cooper one was as no one told me any different. Could this actually be a new pregnancy or is there some other reason for why the line is darker? Please any advise is welcome xxx

I definitely don’t think I’ve retained the ‘baby’ as I felt sooooo much better almost immediately and I’m pretty sure I saw it, so I’d say it would be tissue however wouldn’t I be having spotting? I really thought wth the coil insitu also I would have had spotting with that as most people report it but nothing. I find this whole thing just bazzare 😩 could they check if it is a new baby say, if it is ectopic at such an early stage? I know just having the mirena coil removed can cause a misscarrige anyway xx thanks for your advise I’m one of these people who needs answers perhaps it’s the nurse in me 🤦🏼‍♀️😅

I was 4+6 days when I had my abortion (which actually put me at around 2+6 since conception as they always add 2 weeks onto it). The nurse could only just see my pregnancy and she was very experienced at doing ultrasounds. She said it was the size of a sesame seed and the sac wasn’t much bigger. I remember her saying i was too early on to be able to see anything in my tubes like an ectopic twin. Think i’d have needed to be another 2 weeks further gone for her to see that.
If you saw the pregnancy pass and felt better afterwards, and then started to get pregnancy symptoms again later on it does sound like a new pregnancy. Plus I don’t think retained tissue would cause a pregnancy test to get darker and for pregnancy symptoms to keep happening. You wouldn’t be pregnant anymore and would just have clots etc still to pass so the symptoms like nausea, sore boobs etc wouldn’t be happening anymore. My friend had retained tissue with hers and she had spotting and bad cramps

Yeah that makes sence. I find it odd that I haven’t had any spotting with this coil when almost 70-80% do. But then I haven’t had the usual implantation pains and cramps and I always have strong period cramps to around now you know when it’s settling in which is just baffling me cause am I right in thinking that in order for it to give off the hcg it has to have implanted somewhere 🤔

I would do a digital test. At least that could indicate a lower or higher level but it’s so frustrating for you to just not know what is going on.
I really feel for you.

Judging by the look of these tests I tbink a digital would say 1-2 weeks xx

The one on the right looks darker than the one on the left to me. Those tests aren’t the best to use as they gave me lighter and darker results on the same day during my pregnancy

Hey purplerain yeah the left is today, I’ve always got on well with these and I did two this morning just to make sure that they were both lighter and they were so I’m hoping HOPING it was just left over hormones👏🏻👏🏻 I’m going to call the GP for tests today but they are so slow 🤦🏼‍♀️

Fingers crossed for you. Hopefully it was just left over hormones and nothing further will be needed. Or maybe you can just take the pills again one last time to get whatever’s left inside you out. It’s a good sign if the tests are going lighter. Have you had more than one blood test done as one test won’t be able to tell you whether you’re definitely pregnant or not

No just had the one, but I’ll find my levels out and see where that places me. I’ve got the apt tomoz so I’ll hopefully be scanned anyway to make sure xx

If it’s a new pregnancy or the remains of the old pregnancy your levels could be similar though. You won’t have high levels yet being so early on in pregnancy, and if it’s the old one then your levels will have probably dropped a bit to a similar level if that makes sense

So I rang the secretary today and she said the test just says ‘will need to repeat in 10-14 days’

Could be a good sign as if they thought it was a new pregnancy they would probably be getting you in sooner than that for a second test. I think you definitely need a scan though to 100% confirm what’s going on. You had your abortion about 5 weeks ago now and they say if you are still testing positive after a month then you urgently need a scan to find out what’s going on

Yeah I agree, I did read last night that if you carry twins it can take the hormones longer to down? Thought maybe this could be an easy possibility x

They would have seen twins in your scan though unless it was ectopic but you would know about it if you were having an ectopic pregnancy (you’d be having a lot of pain) x

They could of, I asked for them not to say or show me the scan/scan pics and I turned my head and she waited until I turned my back to pick up the scan results. xx

Ah ok so you asked them not to say if it was twins or not? In that case then it could just be extra hormones taking ages to get out of your system. The only weird thing is that your preg symptoms went away after it and have now come back. But I guess these things aren’t always 24/7 and can come and go xx

Yeah I said I didn’t want to know anything about the scan, and she made sure the screen was turned away etc. But she did ask if she could tell me my gestation to see if it was what I thought and I said that was ok but in terms of the scan I didn’t want to know. Yeah I thought that. So before the week I started having awful migraines on and off sore boobs, and bouts of nausea however I do have the hormonal coil which can mimic some of those symptoms as I used to feel the same previously on the mini pill. But I think that when I know something the symptoms are exacerbated - my mind plays up so it could well be that.
Tootsings- I’m hoping tommorow I’ll knkw more but if they can’t find any tissue left behide I guess it’s further blood tests as they wouldn’t see another preg so soon 😩

Yeah that’s definitely darker. If they can’t see any further tissue tomorrow then it’s probably a new pregnancy. I have heard of some women taking like 8 weeks to get a negative after an abortion but think it’s quite rare. Hopefully you are one of those people and nothing further needs to be done x
