I had a scan at 5 weeks on Friday. During the scan and on my report she stated the sac was empty. Now looking at my picture I’m sure I can see something in the sac?? Do you see anything or am I being silly.. Thankyou

I have to wonder (and I am absolutely not getting at you op) why would they scan at 5 weeks even with a history of miscarriage. All it would seem to do is cause worry as nothing could be seen yet. I can understand the hcg checking but the scan is not going to affect the outcome is it? Why do they not wait until something is likely to be seen?
Or am I missing something obvious and they can do something?

I was the same two blood tests and a scan at 5 weeks with my epu. They decide on what level hcg is, I think if its over 1000 they will scan. Mine was to check pregnancy was in the right location not if they could actually see much. Maybe if being such high risk like op or myself they get you in asap 🤔 xxx

Yeah you’re right they did wanna check all was in the right place! My EPU must be strict because they said my levels had to be over 3000 for a scan lol x

Oh really, they must all just go by their own rules then xx

@Jadeypie thank you. That makes sense.

BeachLifeForMe · 08/07/2025 09:58

I was under the care of the EPU. Had a scan at 5 weeks, nothing visible in the sac. They didn't really say anything positive or negative just come back in a week for another scan. I expected the worst though as nobody said it's normal to see nothing! A week on and I felt sooo sick and there was a visible embryo. It's amazing the difference a week makes.

Honestly I would ignore this thread as the comments can't be helpful to you. Best of luck with your pregnancy

I’m so sorry you’ve lost so many babies, OP.
Hoping this one is fine x

For the past 2 days I’ve been feeling awfully sick.. gagging at every thing and if I don’t eat omggg. I’ve booked a private scan for today. It’s only been 4 days so doubt there will be anything in the sac but will go anyway x

To be honest, I can’t understand why you booked a private scan so soon, when I’m guessing EPU will be giving you a follow up some time next week anyway? And then you’ll have a better idea of what’s happening as there’ll definitely be more to see - and more chance of whatever you see sticking - whereas at before 6 weeks the best you’ll get is a speck and a visible heartbeat if you’re very lucky. The past 3 years for me have been book ended by early miscarriages with nothing in between, so I was battling both fertility issues and pregnancy loss. I was astounded when I got another BFP in May just three months after my last loss. I was adamant I didn’t want an early scan as I was worried that it would either cause extra anxiety or false reassurance, but in the end I was asked to have a scan to help them get the right date for my NIPT. That scan was at 8+5, which ended up being a good compromise- I saw a bean and heartbeat and was far enough along (and bang on my calculated dates) to make me feel more optimistic about my dating scan, which will be next week. Fingers crossed for you in any case!

The scan was already booked for In a few days. I’ve got a scan at EPU next week. So I changed the date for today or I’ll end up having a scan 2 days apart which makes no sense at all. And I’m not gunna cancel and lose £90.

I appreciate the comments about not scanning too early, but it can show if the pregnancy is in the right place even before 6 weeks. In my experience I was refused a scan after two separate A&E trips bleeding and in terrible pain, all because I was under 6 weeks (5+2 and 5+5). Exactly 48 hours later I was back in hospital in agony with a ruptured ectopic and internal bleeding. The scan showed a clear and sizeable mass and internal bleeding that would've been visible had they scanned 2 days earlier. If they had just bothered to scan me I may have avoided the pain from rupture and possibly surgery. It was tough.

What time's your scan OP?

These early scans cause so many people angst, but I do get why they do them. I couldn't bare to get told "no heartbeat " again, but also really wanted to know if all was ok, so ended up getting scanned at 7 weeks. I think before this, there's a lot of uncertainty and worry

Upyouget · 08/07/2025 15:51

I’m in awe of you Op! 8 miscarriages, only 5 weeks pregnant, an ambiguous scan and u see specialist care - and wry sure that all 100% perfect.

I hadn’t had a single miscarriage but goodness…. I spent my pregnancy fearing that things were “100% perfect” from day 1

💪
