Right, here's the problem. My sister is very happily married to a wonderful man and they have two kids. My sister suspected she was pregnant and took a test which was positive. So far so good. Working out the dates, they guessed she must be well over nine weeks (as they hadn't had sex since then!) Sister slightly suprised she had had a period though since last sex though...

WELL. Gone for dating scan today and hospital say definately only six weeks.

S**t hits fan.

I know my little sister and I know she is telling me the complete truth that she has not slept with anyone else. Husband unsuprisingly wants to know how this baby can have been conceived if there has been no sex since well before xmas.

What the hell has happened? Can scans ever be so very wrong? I wondered if there could be a growth problem with the baby? What's the likelyhood of pregnancy if there was no penatration but a bit of, shall we say, horseplay?

Meanwhile my sister and her husband are falling apart. He is not talking.

I would pay for a private scan for peace of mind , but if the dates are still wrong then how will you feel. I don't think scans are completly accurate as I have experienced being told I was a couple of weeks less pregnant than I thought and than I actually was! It sounds like you and your husband are bearing up well , I'm sure he trusts you and is just confused and worried too.

Hi everyone,
Thanks so much for all your comments.
It was definatly a period I had on 18th December,it lasted my usual 5/6 days!
Things at home aren't great,I guess I will just have to wait now for next scan in 6 weeks.................Am worried now there may be a problem with the babys growth, will try and relax!
Thanks again.

I got pregnant just before a period, and had two more periods after that. Didn't even get a test until 16weeks! The dates they gave me never seemed to add up given the fact that I KNEW we had only had sex the once in months. No doubt about paternity though. DS is absolute spitting image of his father.

rachaelsara · 01/02/2008 14:46

I got pg even though he withdrew! That was after needing clomid for dd1 and dd2!

You're probably very fertile! Do you use the same towel? Bath water? Loo seat?

ThePrisoner · 01/02/2008 19:06

My dh was abroad for 3 weeks when I supposedly got pregnant. I know when I got pregnant as I'd been using an ovulation kit, and had precisely planned when to do the dirty deed. We had a very busy weekend!! I also had a "period" (it obviously wasn't), and gave up trying to discuss it with doctors.

Until I read about your dh's reaction, it never occurred to me that my dh might have felt the same way. I just asked him, and he laughed and said that it hadn't occurred to him that he might not be the dad.

Perhaps your dh should read this thread.

madamez · 01/02/2008 22:50

Tractors, your DH should definitely read this thread, or read something aobut conception and pregnancy dates. As people have said on here, what they call a 9 week pregnancy might be being counted as 'two weeks before you did the act of conception plus the weeks since you did it.' This bemused me when I was PG as I knew the exact date of the relevant sex session but they were telling me I was 11 weeks PG when it was only 8 weeks from the shag IYSWIM.

Difficult one - 9 weeks seems a long time buy you don't say how old the other 2 are - or what king of sleepers they are . I have a friend who swears blind that her second child was an immaculate conceptiona as they had not had sex ! Sperm are tricky b***s , a bit of 'fooling around' might well have done it ! Support your sister - husband sounds insecure - are they having problems ?

cinnamontam · 02/02/2008 00:08

Tractors - until I got pregnant DH and I had no idea whatsoever how convoluted the whole conception business was and how long it could take after the event.

I thought have lovely shag - next day embryo starts growing.

I can imagine if your DH had this in his head then despite himself he would start questioning things. Doesn't make it any easier for you I know.

Wishing you guys all the best and that this little one is a healthy sticky one xx

know lots of women who had a light period early on,or spotting. As earlier poster said dating sex is not the same as dating conception,it can be a week or more later than "the deed".also possible they have dates wrong? Friend still swears she had no sex the month ds was conceived, had total shock to be pregnant,(and no doubt of parentage as he looks like daddy.)I think tired people lose track of time.As to sex frequency,is nine weeks really freakish in a long term relationship with babies?if so I and all my mates are doomed.Sex while asleep?it has been known!

hellymelly · 02/02/2008 00:37

Just realised had missed lots of postings.Hmm..Nine weeks preg is seven weeks since conception, conception is often a week after sex ..about right no?

MrsEi25 · 02/02/2008 01:11

hi i just thought i would post though i havent read all of the thread
with DD my dating scan was 2 weeks earlier on measurements than a scan i had a week before the first scan put me at 12+3wk and the second scan said i was only 10+4 which was obviously rubbish. she should demand another scan and see what they say then.
xx ei xx

ScoobyDoo · 02/02/2008 15:17

You know you said you had a period on the 18th december when before that did you do the deed?

My mil had proper periods all the way through one of her pregnancy, so just because you had a proper period on the 18th does not mean you were not pregnant it can still be possible.

CarGirl · 02/02/2008 15:26

my SIL's scan dates measured her dates completely diff to her LMP again, they had a weekend away and hadn't done it for quite some time either before or after. So according to her the baby was due at the beginning of the month however in the end she was induced at 2 weeks over (according to scan dates) at the very end of the month. It was all very much TMI at the time!

So in conclusion the baby was conceived and started growing etc at least a week after they did the deed and more likely nearly 2 weeks afterwards - all very strange but very def true.

I think the scans do more harm than good lots of the time!
