I had a glucose test in my first pregnancy because my dad has diabetes, but if they don't mention it, you don't need to worry! It's just offered if you are "at risk" for gestational diabetes.
They've not mentioned it this time - but my numbers were super low in my first pregnancy/not a concern for GD, so I'm not too worried. I need to remember to ask at my 28 week midwife appointment! Currently on hold to the Dr's surgery to book that... I don't enjoy the endless phone queuing at my Dr's!!!
Last time, I had to give a fasted blood sample, drink an awful high calorie drink and wait an hour for another sample. But the midwife did mention they don't do the oral test now, so I'm totally clueless!

AdventuresAwait · 28/05/2021 10:10

@CherLW and @FTEngineerM, I have my 25 week appointment today too! When do they start doing measurements of bump?

I'm feeling baby lots now and my husband felt her too which was so lovely! But I also have days with much less movements still.

I have my Glucose test at the beginning of June. @GWhiteley, I don't think everyone has one, I have certain risk factors so was booked in at the start. But you could check with your midwife.

GWhiteley · 28/05/2021 10:14

@Scotti84 I'm glad your doctor is supporting you properly & offering to sign you off if you need it.
I totally get it about the work relationship thing, but really they shouldn't have put you in this position in the first place, so they're the ones that would be potentially ruining the relationship.
Hopefully things will work out without you having to resort to that

GWhiteley · 28/05/2021 10:15

@AdventuresAwait my midwife said they start measuring from 28 weeks, as I asked whether I looked big for 25+5. I FEEL huge, but she said I'm fine!

CherLW · 28/05/2021 10:18

@AdventuresAwait I went to the MAU about a week and a half ago for reduced movements and she measured my bump then. So today she didn’t do it as she said they don’t normally want to do it more more than once on the space of two weeks.
If I didn’t have it done at the MAU tho she would have done it today and I’m 26 weeks.

FTEngineerM · 28/05/2021 10:26

@Bubbles1st I’m sure what we go through will slap him in the face when he sees an actual human exit your vagina or stomach. My DP has never been as nice to me as after I gave birth, I think it had something to do with me making him look as you could see the head coming🙊🙊

@CherLW she almost forgot mine just as I was about to go I said can I have a matb1 now, so ring them or the gp?

No measurements, it was really boring actually, tested my pee and BP and that was it. Next one is 28 weeks at the hospital.

I don’t know what the criteria is in our trust for glucose but my BMI has been high both times so I’m not surprised I’m having another.

FTEngineerM · 28/05/2021 10:28

@Scotti84 you’re making me want to be in Germany! That’s a great backup plan, I hope they’re more flexible with you though.

CherLW · 28/05/2021 10:33

@FTEngineerM phew! All sorted! I just called them back and they had it ready for me to collect 😊.

My appointment today she took my BP, that air flow thing they do, felt my stomach, listened to heartbeat and just chatted really...

AdventuresAwait · 28/05/2021 10:36

Thanks @GWhiteley, will see what mine says today!

@CherLW also went to the MAU last week for reduced movements (it felt significantly less). They didn't measure my bump but I will see what happens today at my 25 week appointment. Bump seems to have grown a lot this week!

FTEngineerM · 28/05/2021 10:51

@AdventuresAwait exciting, maybe ask them to measure it if it’s not offered? There seems to be such a variation based on what trust you’re in which is bonkers 😬.

This is a total non problem, but, I work Mon-Thur and ALL of my appointments seem to be on a Friday 👀. Since we get free time off I would like it if it were a working day 😂.

CherLW · 28/05/2021 10:52

@AdventuresAwait I was surprised when they did at the MAU, I don’t think it’s a normal thing they do. All was well tho so that’s the main thing. 😊

Kirky658 · 28/05/2021 10:52

I have my glucose tolerance test at some point soon, both my parents are type 2 diabetic so they want me to have y want me to have it done as a precaution really.

@adventuresawait how was your experience with mau? My midwife has told me I don't need to monitor movements really till 28 weeks as long as I feel her moving once a day.

AdventuresAwait · 28/05/2021 11:41

@Kirky658, they were amazing! Everything I read said from 28 weeks but at my last midwife appointment I was told that I should monitor it from then as I was feeling baby regularly. She said to call even with reduced movements from that appointment onwards. At the weekend, I only felt baby a couple of times in the day and wasn't too concerned but it continued the next day. I felt her at 7am and then nothing. So I rang the MAU for advice in the afternoon and they said to go in. I wasn't there for long... they did my BP and tested my urine & listened to baby. Good, strong heartbeat with no deceleration so they were happy. They couldn't have been nicer. And baby has moved loads since!

Kirky658 · 28/05/2021 11:46

@adventuresawait ahhh I see. I'm feeling her a lot more now so I've downloaded the kicks count app as she's definitely getting a routine now! I'm not too keen on my midwife to be honest I worry she's not on the ball enough. Glad that you had a good experience with your MAU as well. I think I picked a bad day when I went to ours and had to wait 6 hrs to be seen - albeit i think that reduced movements is properly seen quicker. X

AdventuresAwait · 28/05/2021 12:27

@Kirky658, I started using the app yesterday when I turned 25 weeks as the movements are so regular. She doesn't seem to sleep much! Maybe just at night lol.

Sorry you had to wait so long... 6 hours seems a long time to wait! It was very quiet when I went so maybe I was just lucky. Felt silly going afterwards but they advised me too and my midwife just said I was right to go as movements were so reduced. I usually feel her at least every 2 hours in the daytime so it was significantly different.

I've just come out of my midwife appointment. All good and my midwife could see baby's movements in my bump as she was finding the heartbeat!

I see her again in 3 weeks for my 28 week appointment and that's when she'll start measurements.

Can't believe I'm 25 weeks now! This 2nd trimester is going by very quickly xx

GWhiteley · 28/05/2021 12:45

After all the talk this morning of glucose tests my midwife has just messaged to say she's booked me one in as my bmi was high when I fell pregnant. Sounds bloody awful & I'll have to remember to take a book as it lasts 2 hrs...how am I going to survive not eating for that amount of time?!

AdventuresAwait · 28/05/2021 13:05

I'm thinking the same @GWhiteley! A book and somewhere nice to eat straight after 😊

MrsTD88 · 28/05/2021 13:20

I had my 25 week appointment today too although I'm not even 23 weeks until Monday! I'm in Scotland so it is slightly different I think. Heard heartbeat again which was lovely and bump is measuring ahead at 24 weeks which isn't a surprise as was same with my daughter. Got my MatB1 and am beyond excited to stick in my official notice for mat leave. She emphasised that I should be keeping track of movements from now and any concerns at all to call triage, even with an anterior placenta she said baby should still have a routine once movements can properly be felt. She mentioned from around 24 weeks baby can hear and so should react to noises. She reccomended our daughter talking to bump every day so she gets used to her sister's voice.

I am having the GTT too. It is booked in for 28 weeks and also having a growth scan and consultant chat that day. Midwife said they should do all my bloods etc that day too so I'll see her again around 30 weeks. I didn't have to have the GTT first time as my BMI was fine but this time damn PCOS just pushed me over at the time of booking appointment. Not looking forward to fasting but they have made the appointment for 9am so should be all done by 11am and I'll then have a few hours to have some food before my scan.

crobo87 · 28/05/2021 15:51

I have a GTT at 28 weeks too.

I haven't seen my midwife since 16 weeks and haven't got an appointment till I'm 28 weeks. She said I could choose between 26&28 weeks and 28 weeks is when she will start measuring bump so said I'd do 28 weeks. Feels like a long time but I have had extra appointments & scans due to my low Papp-a

Bubbles1st · 28/05/2021 16:36

Whilst I think about it, does anyone whose had a new born before recommend any apps for logging feeds, naps, changes. Preferably one that does all.

Did you actually find it helpful to notice an established routine?

OP posts:
Squibble84 · 28/05/2021 18:38

Ah so much to catch up on! Hope everyone is ok!

I have a GTT booked because of my ethnicity, I remember how crap it was last time, fasting from midnight before, then after they took my blood at 9 and gave me the drink, I had to sit in the maternity ward cafeteria smelling everyone making toast for 3 hours until I could get the repeat blood test and eat again! 😭

@Bubbles1st the huckleberry app is great for logging sleep, feeds, nappy changes etc and after you’ve put in enough data, it recommends a ‘sweet spot’ nap time for when you should be putting baby down to sleep which was always pretty spot on for my DD.

SillyBry · 28/05/2021 18:38

@Bubbles1st I think I used this: apps.apple.com/gb/app/baby-feed-timer-breastfeeding/id395357581

Or one very similar anyway! I downloaded a few and went with the one I felt easiest to use. I found it massively helpful. My daughter was kept in hospital for a few days with jaundice, so they hammered home the importance of tracking feeds and nappies. Because of that, I found it hard to shake the habit and tracked it until she was weaning really.
I found it good for working out when you fed last as you lose track of time as the days merge into each other!

FTEngineerM · 28/05/2021 18:55

I didn’t use one Bubbles but I should have! We were in a pickle sometimes trying to figure out what he might need, the hours fly by in the early days. Will deffo use one this time.

KHR1 · 28/05/2021 19:15

I've got my GTT on Tuesday, dreading all the blood tests as I don't have very good veins.
@Bubbles1st I didn't use one last time but wish I had! I rememeber the midwife turning up after the first day at home and asking exactly how much milk my DD had taken in 24 hours and about the number of nappies etc. I was so tired and with DH doing some bottle feeds it took me ages to figure it out so ended up keeping notes after that

Bubbles1st · 28/05/2021 20:04

Thanks ladies will take a look at those two, I think I'll definitely need it to know what's going on 🙈
