I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/topics/nausea-vomiting-in-pregnancy
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
It has been suggested that I add some practical tooth cleaning advice: a lot of sufferers find using a child's small toothbrush and strawberry toothpaste far less nauseating.
On my image of a pink castle: that is an image I use because when I was little, my family had a Snakes and Ladders board with an image on the last square of a pink castle in the clouds. As Hyperemesis is so like a grotesque version of Snakes and Ladders - eat a meal, go up a ladder, first thing in the morning bile run, down a snake - I have used the image of that pink castle on the last square of that Snakes and Ladders board as a metaphor for the happy end of Hyperemesis.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Abbs1 Thank you so much! I didn't get it, so that's a relief; I wonder if my PM inbox is full up or something ? I haven't found a way of emtpying it. I'll have to ask.
RockinRobin Thank you too for your encouraging message for those in the throes of the first tri. Sorry the nausea is back. Maybe it is an hormonal surge.
Ttcbn2 It can be unnerving, though it happens to many.

Hi guys

Does anyone else get a dry wretching thing? Like suddenly I'm going to be sick, but then I'm not. It's not from nausea it just comes on???

thingymaboob · 06/07/2021 14:09

@L1ttleb1t I dry wretch about 20 times a day. Sometimes it comes out of nowhere. Mostly dry wretching instead of actual vomiting.

I measured my legs and ordered some compression stockings as I'm worried about how inactivity and dehydration is increasing my risk of DVT

abbs1 · 06/07/2021 14:13

@L1ttleb1t i definitely had that. Its so awful isnt it. 😔

@thingymabob definitely get some. I wore them every time I went into hospital. Did they give you some when you were admitted?

@lucindaE i didnt even know I had a PM box so could be my end thats not working.

LucindaE · 06/07/2021 15:12

L1ttleb1t Thingymaboob and abbs1 and everyone. I'm off for a few days, visiting daughter. Mother Hen Lucinda will be back on Saturday. abbs1 is very kindly going to run the thread. abbs1 You may be right there, but even so, I think I need to empty Wishing everyoe all the best in my absence. my PM box. I hope you escape much more lightly this time - after all, it has happened to various sufferers on here - and thanks again.

@thingymabob and @abbs1 I'm sorry you've had the dry cough/wretch too. Though I'm glad it's not just me. I'm trying not to panic it will become proper vomitting again. I'm off all sickness meds now as they gave me tremors so I'm on my own... except for Gavison! Eek.

abbs1 · 06/07/2021 17:27

@L1ttleb1t im so sorry no medications are working. How far along are you? Can you ask for steroids? They were my last hope after multiple medications didnt work properly. They were a life saver and made me feel so much better.

@lucindaE have a lovely time with your daughter. I will do my best in your absence. x

L1ttleb1t · 06/07/2021 19:15

@abbs1 To be honest the tremors have been so overwhelming we daren't add anything new in until they settle. GP said today the tremors will settle... Obs consultant said I can "certainly" go back on something once this is sorted, even if just omeprazole. I'm just trying to get through. Tried Gaviscon earlier and it came straight back up! Ugh.

thingymaboob · 06/07/2021 20:22

@L1ttleb1t sounds awful.
Vomiting gaviscon is the worst.
I have vomited three times today and felt like hell. 8+2 today. I am dreading the next month.

abbs1 · 07/07/2021 07:30

The sickness has started 😔 Ive woken up feeling absolutely terrible. Thankfully the dr is ringing this morning so im hoping he gives me all i need to get it under control before it gets worse.

finallyfoundkeys · 07/07/2021 07:57

Hi, new here. I am 7 weeks but first scan put me back a week so 6 weeks. I have been so ill over the last week. Only actually sick once or twice a day but have felt nauseous the whole time. I am waking several time in the night because of the sick feeling. Even rolling over in bed heightens it. I have not been able to eat much in that time and have lost 7lb in the last week (I am a bigger person, so no chance of waisting away.) I have been sucking ice which has helped get some fluids but if I drink too much it comes back up. I am worried about dehydration as urine is dark and was a little bit stingy when I last went. I feel like drs won't want to hear from me as only sick twice a day but reading some of this early thread has given me the confidence to call this morning. I have had 3 miscarriages prior to this pregnancy and never felt ill before so trying to see this as a good sign. I have a viability scan next Wednesday, if this has been for nothing I will be devastated.

abbs1 · 07/07/2021 08:55

@finallyfoundkeys welcome to our support page. Sounds like your have a rough time. Lucinda is currently away but if you look through the thread she offers some great advice on things to try to keep hydrated.
If you are not able to drink and your urine is dark you definitely need to call your gp and get some medication and get them to check your urine for Dehydration. It is safe to take and if they say no, i would highly suggest going to your nearest a and e or call the early pregnancy unit at your hospital as they may be able to prescribe some medication and check the ketones in your urine. Dehydration is extremely dangerous so you may need some iv fluids.
Some find cyclizine works to help with the nausea as first point of call for medication but if it doesnt the hospital normally offer ondansatron but if they do make sure you get some lactulose as it makes you very constipated but works for many hg sufferers.
Keep us posted on how you get on. We are here to support you.

finallyfoundkeys · 07/07/2021 09:14

Thank you Abbs1. It is so reassuring the have found this page. I have called the drs and I am getting a call back this afternoon. Burst in to tears on the phone, the poor receptionist.

Oh bless you. Im really glad they are calling back. I really hope they can give you some relief. I cried down the phone multiple times begging for medication in my last pregnancy as i felt so unwell so dont worry. My dr just called and has given me what i need so im really happy.
finallyfoundkeys · 07/07/2021 14:52

I spoke to the most wonderful dr who had HG for both of her pregnancies. She has prescribed me cyclizine up to 3 a day. And given me a 2 week sick note so that takes the stress off. My lovely mum is picking it up for me now so I can take one ASAP.

Oh thats great! I hope it makes you feel better. Its great when the dr understands. I hope you got their name in case you need to call again. Try and rest as much as you can while you are off work.

Hello everyone. I’m new to this thread and looking for some advice / tips. Currently 8 weeks with my first, suffering since around the 5 week mark with vomiting for the last week and a half.

Not sure if I am in the HG category but I vomit bile every morning, can then manage some tea and toast to line my stomach . My biggest problem is the food adversions/sour taste in back of mouth which leads to restricted food / fluid intake. Have a hard time eating or drinking anything. Yesterday I struggled to get 500ml liquid. Today a bit better. I go downhill from 6pm can’t eat or drink anything after that and normally vomit before bed. I feel like it’s controlling my existence atm.

Does this sound like HG? My consultant from the recurrent miscarriage clinic gave me cyclizine which makes me really sleepy but I think it may help if I take it early enough in the day.

Any advice or tips to get this under control greatly appreciated!

Welcome to the thread. Definitely sounds like hg of your vomitting bile and no liquid really. If your not able to take in or hold down at least 500ml you need to speak to your gp or go to a and e for some iv fluids and some iv medication as it sounds like you are probably very dehydrated. Have a look down the thread as Lucinda has some great advice on foods to try etc. If you can keep on top of your of yout cyclizine even through the night that may help. If it doesnt definitely ask for ondansatron as that helps a lot of suffers. Make sure to get lactulose as well as it makes you very constipated. If it is possible can you take some time off work with a sick note so you can really rest? Also if you can order some ketone sticks to check the levels in your urine at home. If its more than 2+ you need to get some fluids. If a and e is too much try calling your early pregnancy unit and they may be able to help you better without sitting in a and e for hours.

@abbs1 you ok? How are you feeling now? Sorry to hear it's started...

I ate an egg Mayo roll from local bakery this morning. It was delicious. I'd powered up on stemetil & ondansetron beforehand. Had a few vomits last few days but none yet so far today. The drug regime has improved things for sure.

Im just about to go get my xonvea to try from the pharmacy so hopefully it helps keep the nausea and sickness away. I didnt have this in my last pregnancy so no idea if it will work or not but im excited to give it a go.

Oh im glad youve had something good to eat. Must have felt amazing! Did you tummy tolerate it ok? Thats so good the drugs are working well for you to keep the vomiting away. How is the nausea atm?

Hey ladies I was on this thread a few years back and am now back pregnant with my 4th.
Time really does make u forget just how horrendous HG is!!
I am currently 6+5 and am sick all day. Can barely move, have been crawling to and from the toilet all day.
I’m so worried as my last pregnancy I had such bad sickness that I ended up with blood clots that started in my leg and travelled to my lungs. It was the scariest time. Now I’m not active again and not keeping down fluids I’m so worried I will get another DVT.
I am on blood thinners to prevent another one but the dr said it’s to lower my risk of getting one but doesn’t take my risk to 0 and to keep active! easier said than done wen u have Hg.

Welcome back to the group. Sorry your suffering again. I take my hat off to you for going through it 4 times. My husband and I would love 4 kids but will see how my 2nd time goes first.

I totally understand how scared you are about dvt again. May i ask what blood thinners you are on? I had to have clexine injections into my stomach. Can you get some compression stockings to wear at home? They gave me some in hospital and had me wear them at home too.

abbs1 · 08/07/2021 20:56

How is everyone coping?

JessicaM2021 · 09/07/2021 01:32

Hi everyone!

It’s been a few weeks since I’ve posted but I read a few pages back. Congrats @abbs1 ! I’m so happy for you but so sorry you are going through this. I’m now 20+3, and for those in the first trimester and recently started suffering, my vomiting finally stopped completely at week 18. I’m still nauseous all day long, but I barley dry heave any more and can eat almost normally again. I’ve been on ondansetron and promethazine since week 6. And in those early weeks I wanted to die. I was in a very, very dark place. So just know you aren’t alone if you’re in the thick of it now, and things will most likely improve, or at least not be as bad as they are now! Im still on all my antiemetics and now I’m on a barbiturate because of course I’ve started migraines lol. But I just had my big 20 week scan and baby girl is doing well!

I hope everyone is doing as well as they can be today!
