I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/topics/nausea-vomiting-in-pregnancy
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
It has been suggested that I add some practical tooth cleaning advice: a lot of sufferers find using a child's small toothbrush and strawberry toothpaste far less nauseating.
On my image of a pink castle: that is an image I use because when I was little, my family had a Snakes and Ladders board with an image on the last square of a pink castle in the clouds. As Hyperemesis is so like a grotesque version of Snakes and Ladders - eat a meal, go up a ladder, first thing in the morning bile run, down a snake - I have used the image of that pink castle on the last square of that Snakes and Ladders board as a metaphor for the happy end of Hyperemesis.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

@abbs1 congratulations on your bfp, and enjoy eating what you want for a bit, glad you've got it sorted with GP so early.

I'm being discharged from hospital today. It's bloody awful on the wards. The smells! I had 4 IV litres of fluid and have had pretty much every drug you can have. Feel more human. Was in a dark place on Monday. Wanted to die, in all honesty. Been prescribed lots to take and got direct ward number if I need to come back in.

@giftbag . Hello, I'm sure @LucindaE will give you her usual blurb but be persistent with GP, there are lots of other options regarding meds.

LilmissCa · 30/06/2021 12:07

@abbs1 big congratulations on your bfp!!

@thingymaboob so glad your feeling better & getting discharged! Great they gave you a direct number to the ward, saves an A&E stint!

LucindaE · 30/06/2021 20:54

giftbag I so agree with abbs1, there are lots of drugs they can try. Unfortunately, many do find that the effectiveness of some drugs can wear off after a while. If they prescribe Onansetron, do press for a laxative. You've probably read my normal spiel if you've scrolled through the spread, but here it is just in case. Most sufferers find that they improve a lot at some point between weeks 14 and 20. Even those who are unlucky enough to suffer throughout generally are not as ill later on as they are in the first part. A good anti acid can make a surprising difference to the sickness. Kesostix are worth buying online or from a chemists, as while they aren't they best test of dehydration, hospitals take them seriously. When reporting on the vomiting to doctors, remember to emphasize the number of heaves in each vomiting session, as doctors tend to count these as 'vomits' and this can lead to their underestimating the severity of your symptoms. Besides drinking through a straw, here are some drinks that have helped others: full sugar flat coke (if you don't find it too acid), ice lollies, the juice of tinned fruit, Lucozade, apple juice, Ribina, Dr Pepper, soda water, Elderflower water, tonic water, ice cubes, Iron Bru, lemonade, lemon squash, orange squash, orange juice (if not too acid), fizzy orange, 7Up, isotonic drinks, sips of chocolate milkshake (maybe soya), fizzy water, apple juice, Robinson's fruit drinks, Rubicon sparkling mango drink , raspberry Lucozade sport and frozen ice cubes of flat Lucozade sport . Foods of a sort include tinned fruit, cuppa soup, nibbles of crisps and chips, cheap ice cream, Scotch pancakes, bagels and biscuits and slices of melon and mango. Protein drinks have also been mentioned.
abbs1 Congratulations! I hope you escape far more lightly this time and I am glad you've got a plan in place.
Thingymaboob I am so glad you got effective treatment and the direct line and are out again.
Waves to LilmissCa and everyone.

Hello all. I am currently 10+4 and sobbing having read through the last 3 of these threads. Whilst it's comforting to hear similar stories I'm so angry at the world that more isn't done for women suffering.

This is my first pregnancy since mmc last May. I thought nothing could feel as raw as being told I'd mc whilst in a room alone with my partner in the carpark, and I've wanted nothing more than to have a baby since. Now it's happening I just feel disgusting and horrible and so guilty for not being more excited.

I know there's a pink castle waiting but I just feel ill never reach it.

Anyway just wanted a bit of a vent. Thanks to those with advice and sending love to all fellow sufferers. X

LucindaE · 01/07/2021 20:54

Emmakins66 Welcome. Oh dear, sorry about your being moved to tears by the experiences of sufferers on this thread. You are right; it is really unfair; I can't help thinking it's because it is by definition a female illness. Around ten weeks is often the worse time for many. Hopefully things will improve a lot. I am sorry to hear of your mmc. I had one too and they make you nervous about the next pregnancy. You are so right, though, to mention looking forward to the fabled Pink Castle I often mention as a metaphor for the happy endiong of the horrors of Hyperemesis. I had that idea from a Snakes and Ladders board that my family had when I was little, with that the goal at the end of the game...What meds have they put you on? You've probably read my normal spiel if you've scrolled through the spread, but here it is just in case. Most sufferers find that they improve a lot at some point between weeks 14 and 20. abbs1 You are admirably stoic and unfazed in your approach to the threat of a repeat of Hyperemesis. Star

@LucindaE dont get me wrong im excited about another baby but my anxiety awaiting hg return does petrify me. Just trying my best to keep positive and make the most of the days before its inevitable return.

L1ttleb1t · 03/07/2021 13:00

Help me - I'm desperate.
Has anyone had muscle tremors in pregnancy? I'm 11 weeks - was put on prochlorperazine and cyclizine for morning sickness and last week suddenly developed shivering and tremors.

It is improving now I'm off the medications - but I'm only get 5 or 6 hours sleep and lying awake tremoring if killing me. I assume I just need to wait for it to settle now I'm off the drugs but it's making me feel dreadful.

Has anyone had this?

thingymaboob · 03/07/2021 17:00

@L1ttleb1t I'm sorry, I'm afraid I take both those pills and don't suffer tremors. Do you think it's the drugs? Have you had bloods done recently and your electrolytes checked? Have you spoken with your GP about this? How's the sickness?

L1ttleb1t · 03/07/2021 19:29

@thingymaboob I've had bloods taken today to check that. I think it's a rare reaction I've just been unlucky. I've been in tears with my terrible sleep. Thankfully the sickness had been manageable.

thingymaboob · 03/07/2021 19:51

@L1ttleb1t sounds dreadful, poor you. Glad you're getting bloods done. I do definitely get side effects from both those drugs. When I got given IV cyclizine at hospital, I felt really high like I'd taken some cocaine or speed and I was jabbering away like crazy to the nurse. My vision also goes blurred with stemetil and I can't focus on things.

I'm 8 weeks today and I've not had any nausea today, which I'm dreadfully worried about of course. I have been taking an anti sickness tablet every 4 hours in a very strict way though so maybe it's just that. I think omeprazole helps a lot too, doesn't it?

LucindaE · 03/07/2021 20:23

L1ttleb1t I am glad those awful symptoms are subsiding. I have had restless legs and insomnia with Cyclizine when I was prescribed it for vomiting with migraine. Sorry to hear of that; it sounds awful. I hope they can find good alternatives.
Thingymaboob Very likely it's only the meds working or a good day, but it is always disturbing for sufferers when the symptoms suddenly disappear, which is so ironic as you can't enjoy it the respite!
abbs1 I think it is very brave of people to go for it a second time. I regret not doing so myself.
Apologies to anyone rudely overlooked.

abbs1 · 03/07/2021 20:40

@thingymabob i always worried so much when symptoms stopped and worried i was losing baby but that's really good keeping on top of your meds and its keeping the nausea and sickness away.
@lucindaE its taken a lot to get to the point of wanting to do it again.

Aranciata · 03/07/2021 21:32

Congratulations @abbs1 hoping things are easier for you this time around.

Glad you got out of hospital and have a plan if you need to go back @thingymaboob

Sorry to hear others also suffering so much @giftbag @Emmakins66

@L1ttleb1t could they prescribe you an alternative? Hopefully the tremors will stop as that medication wears off.

@Emmakins66 you will get to the pink castle. Thanks to @LucindaE for the hopeful image.

I have been sleeping (or trying to sleep) with a lot of pillows which seems to help heartburn/sick feeling when lying down.

Also got little mixer size tins of cola and find those good for a bit of energy.

Sending best wishes to all 💐

nomeslice · 04/07/2021 08:31

@Littlebit not exactly the same as you but metoclopramide made me feel very agitated, anxious and shaky. My pulse rate and breathing were really fast too. I felt absolutely horrendous taking it so I stopped.
Ondansetron and cyclizine has got my vomiting under control. I'm having more good days than bad days with the nausea so feeling a bit more human again. I'm 9 weeks now so hopefully getting through the worst of it. Hope everyone else is coping ok this weekend!

L1ttleb1t · 04/07/2021 12:49

I had a better nights sleep last night with the tremors ... don't want to jinx it but I'm hopeful they are improving. I've stopped omeprazole too as turns out tremors can be a side effect of that. I'm now a bit anxious about getting heartburn back - have got gaviscon ready. Why is this so hard? The drugs were helping with all this until the tremors :(

LucindaE · 04/07/2021 14:18

Thingymaboob How are things?
nomeslice Very sensible to come off metaclopramide, as some women do get twitching o n it which isn't good for them to have for too long as I understand it, though the baby is unaffected.

L1ttleb1t I'm glad to hear that.
Arianciata That's a good idea about those tiny coke tins. Sleeping propped up does help the heartburn for many. Have they suggested alternatives? You used to be able to take Ranitidine as a anti-acid but then there was a scare about it and it seemed to be withdrawn.
I never knew that about Omprazole.
Waves to abbs1 and everyone...

thingymaboob · 04/07/2021 16:22

Hiya, I'm ok. I'm taking drugs every 4 hours even through the night as I set an alarm. It seems to be helping. I'm rotating cyclizine, stemetil and ondansetron.

Ate a magnum yesterday. Which felt amazing but paid for it with increased nausea. Ate pasta today too so feel the regime is working for now

Ttcbn2 · 04/07/2021 18:04

Hi all! I joined this group last week.. I had an awful few days.. I’m only around 5+6 at the minute but since those few days I have felt fantastic, other than being a bit tired, no sickness, no nausea, no nothing.. and now I can’t help but worry that there’s something wrong 🙈 with my first I vomited multiple times excessively every day from about 4.5weeks until I gave birth 😫 I know it’s probably a good thing for me that I’m feeling good right now but I’m so worried 🙈 x

abbs1 · 04/07/2021 19:42

Hi All, hope everyone is coping. Sorry I've been so quiet. Trying to spend as much time with my little boy before hg strikes. Feel free to tag me if you need any specific advice or help x

LucindaE · 04/07/2021 19:54

Ttcbn2 It may well be just a few good days: but is there anything you can eat/drink which is guaranteed to set you off if you're very anxious?
Much sympathy. It is always unnerving when this sort of thing happens.
Thingymaboob Congratulations on the Magnum, anyway.
abbs1 Not sure if you saw my p/m?

@LucindaE everything was setting me off.. smells wise etc the other day, yet nothing now, so strange! X

RockinRobinn · 05/07/2021 03:28

Hi everyone,
Just checking in there seem to be a lot of new people since I've last been on and a few less familiar faces hopefully meaning that most have stopped suffering so intensely who are due around the same time as me.
I'm now currently 28 weeks and just taking an occasional omeprazole but the nausea is definitely still there daily and ramping up a bit again 😭 I feel like I must have gone through a big hormonal surge over the last week as emotions are heightened too. Praying that the sickness eases again as I'm so close to taking a cyclizine again but I want to avoid it if I can.
Sending strength to those early on in the pits of despair it does usually get better for most in second trimester and I got a hell of a lot better in my second trimester! Even now it's nothing like before. Sending love to everyone.
