how does midwife reveal the gender?

Hi,

We would like to host a gender reveal party. We want midwife to tell a third person about the gender so they can arrange the party accordingly. Can we speak to midwife to let third person know about the gender? is it possible? once the scan is complete, can we give a third person number so they can text them directly. Please suggest.

Thanks

Midwives don't do scans. Are you aware a sonographer is carrying out a medical procedure and is not a party planner? At most (and they are not obliged to) they might write it down and put it in an envelope but this is against the policy of some trusts.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 18/01/2021 21:41

Also they can't always tell, it depends on baby's position.

LouJ85 · 18/01/2021 21:42

You may want to consider paying for a private scan if you want them to write down gender for you so you can pass onto someone else. Many NHS trusts won't do this (some will but not many).

LeroyJenkinssss · 18/01/2021 21:42

Oof. You are best having a private scan and getting them to do it. I must admit I’m struggling to think of a single sonographer I know who would agree to this especially ringing/texting another person.

As above a lot of trusts don’t allow this and with my first they wouldn’t do a gender scan at all.

swiftt · 18/01/2021 21:44

If you want this sort of ‘reveal’ then you’d be best to book a private sexing scan. If they tell you the sex (some trusts don’t) at your NHS anatomy scan, then I imagine they would just tell you rather than taking any of these extra steps. It’s not the purpose of that scan. Private ones can write it down and you could give that to a third person?

raaga · 18/01/2021 21:44

thanks for the message. I mean sonographer, sorry my bad. I know they are not party planners, just want to know if they can message someone we know. Thanks for clarification

I think they do it on the tv show 90 Day Fiance so someone’s mum can throw a big sucky gender reveal with pink or blue balloons. Are you planning on going on that show? In that case I think a producer sorts it out for you.

Are you even in the U.K.? The midwife will have nothing to do with your scan, and the sonographer probably won’t be able to take texts as they’ll be busy with their jobs, not dealing with a patient’s party planning.

smoothchange · 18/01/2021 21:45

Take a piece of paper and an envelope with you.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 18/01/2021 21:45

Sorry, I actually meant to say sickly, not sucky! You’re not going to be able to host a party in the near future though, are you?

raaga · 18/01/2021 21:46

Thanks everyone for all your replies. Really appreciate it.

Message how? On their on personal phones? I can’t see them agreeing to that. I also think a private scan would be best.

babyno2pending · 18/01/2021 21:47

I found those responses so rude 😧 get a private scan some sell gender reveal 'equipment' (don't know what else to call it😂)

Miltonj · 18/01/2021 21:48

Mine wrote it down for me so me and partner could find out at the same time (he wasn't allowed in because of COVID). They might do that for you if you ask. They certainly won't text anyone. Then I believe if you want some kind of reveal party, you give the price of paper to a party shop and they sort the balloon for you - not my kind of thing, but this is how, I gather, it works!

Essexgirlupnorth · 18/01/2021 21:48

No it would be a massive bread of patient confidentially and the sonographer could loose their job. Just book a private sexing scan op

OohImBlindedByTheLights · 18/01/2021 21:51

Under nhs data protection, they will never text a random number with the gender of your baby. No trust would ever do that.

Most trusts don't disclose the gender now as it's not a gender reveal scan, it's a health check scan.

Go for a private scan and as suggested, take paper and an envelope and have the sonographer write it down and seal the envelope.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 18/01/2021 21:51

Yeah I can definitely see why they would write it down so you and your partner can figure me out at the same time, that’s a nice thing to do. For party planning purposes though I dont think it’s the done thing- I wouldn’t even go to a gender reveal or a baby shower (I’m pregnant myself but no thanks) but I thought the gender ‘reveal’ was to reveal it to your friends and family, not that it’s revealed to you then too. Not my area of expertise though.

MoonBaby1 · 18/01/2021 21:51

I thought you meant when she delivers your baby Grin! By the by, many midwives are also sonographers.

Good luck with finding Your answer Flowers

shittingthreeeyedraven · 18/01/2021 21:51

Went I went for my 20 week scan recently, I was asked if I wanted to know or not and I asked if they could write it down and put it in an envelop as DH wasn’t allowed to the scan and we wanted to find out together. I clearly wasn’t the only one to ask this as she had a drawer full of slips of paper with male/female tick boxes on them and envelopes. You could get this and give it directly to the friend/person organising?

Don’t listen to the disdain, MN love to hate anything ‘American’ or to do with the dreaded gender

SmidgenofaPigeon · 18/01/2021 21:52
  • find out at the same time
StillWeRise · 18/01/2021 21:52

you know the point of the scan is to look for problems with the baby, right?

FeloniusGru · 18/01/2021 21:54

I am so baffled by this post. Good luck with your pregnancy OP.

SallyCinnamon3009 · 18/01/2021 21:58

We booked a private scan, the assistant left the scan and told the girl working on the front desk who then made up a balloon. We took the balloon home and popped it with family and so all found at the same time. I think the alternative is getting it written down on a pieces of paper and then taking it to somewhere that makes up balloons and passing them the paper.

Your best bet is definitely to go for a private scan though, as pp have staged the NHS scan Is there to fulfil a function and check the babies ok.

Babydust13 · 18/01/2021 22:32

Bet you're glad you asked now with some of these replies 🙄🙄

WalkingMeAway · 18/01/2021 22:32

Our trust has lots of signs up saying sonographer will only verbally confirm sex of baby to patient only, and will not write down on paper etc.

So yes agree with others. Book a private gender scan for this purpose x

MsHedgehog · 18/01/2021 22:42

No, of course they would not do that. The sonographer is a medical professional (they're doctors at my hospital), and there is no way they will message a random number information about your scan.

If you're lucky, they might write it on a piece of paper for you, but they're usually too busy.

As others have said, book a private gender scan. They probably won't text someone else for you, but they might write it on a piece of paper in an envelope.
