Will my son be allowed to come to 12 week scan?

Hi,
I’m due to have my 12 week scan in a couple of weeks. My husband would like to attend it but we would have no one to look after our son (without breaking lockdown rules). My son is 7, so if my husband was to attend my son would need to come with us.
I don’t mind going on my own, would obviously rather my husband be there but just wondered if anyone knows if a child can accompany you at this time?

I don’t think so. Check out the latest pages for your nhs trust; but think it’s only one adult.

Not in my local hospital in North West I'm afraid.

Childcare is a reason to leave your house though so maybe someone could look after him for the hour or two?

Not sure I'd want my child at the hospital at the min with the risk of catching something.

I wouldn't have thought so they've only just started allowing partners in. If you feel safe and you have someone you can use someone for childcare without breaking the rules

DH possibly won't be allowed anyway. Check if he's even allowed.

And also, don't take the 7yo, what if there's bad news?

Either find someone else to look after DS, or DH has to stay with him.

Are they allowing partners to go again? In my local hospital it’s still the case that partners can’t attend the scans yet.

I would assume not as the current guidance says you can have just one other person with. Why don't you ring the place you're having the scan and ask/plead your case?

No idea but I doubt it. In previous lockdowns women has to had scans on their own without the company of partners. Doubt that they’d allow extra people more than the ones needed in the room

Check with your hospital. Pre Covid they banned all children at scans at mine.
Then during lockdown they banned all partners at scans.

I went to all my NHS scans alone. I paid for a private scan so my husband could see the baby.

This has been revised in some places now (locally one partner at 20week scan only) but given the case rises it may all change again...

Depends on your individual hospital but we are saying absolutely no dc can enter the hospital unless they are the patient. There will be exceptions but your situation wouldn’t be one of them. In normal times we really advise against dc attending scans in case there’s bad news.

Dh/p can attend 12 and 20 scans with us but many hospitals aren’t able to do this.

I know it's not exactly your question but you are allowed to have someone else look after your son even before childcare bubbles as it comes under medical need.

Recent guidance for NHS England has stated that partners or 1 support person should be allowed at appointments including scans now but no children.

I have one this week, partner can attend for last 5 min of the scan and my letter specifically states no children allowed. North west hospital

Most hospitals want you to come alone atm. Many private scan companies have banned under 16's so I would think that hospitals will have done too. You can make a childcare bubble with another household for children under 14 if you need to, check the rules of these bubble on the gov.uk website

At my trust, pre-Covid, children could wait in the waiting room as long as there as a responsible adult with them, but they absolutely weren't allowed into the scan room. The letter did say as that while it was allowed, it was discouraged unless absolutely necessary.

Nowadays, I'd assume absolutely no children allowed and only one person to accompany you, if that.

As a PP had said, childcare is allowed if there's a medical need, which imo this counts as.

Unfortunately I have had to go to all my NHS scans for my current pregnancy alone as my NHS trust isn't allowing any partners. Even my private scans ( which dh has been able to attend) state no children at the moment.
As pp has said I really wouldn't have wanted to take my daughter to any of my scans - I found out about several MC's at various NHS scans.

Definitely worth checking with your trust that your partner would be able to attend or not.

At my trust children weren’t allowed in before COVID. Partners being allowed back in is a recent thing too. Strictly only one person.

I was coming on to say this, in my trust no children are allowed into scan rooms at all, even pre covid

even before covid most hospitals wouldn’t allow children to attend scans - which, honestly, i agree with. a scan is a medical appointment, not a day out for the whole family. surely you can have a childcare bubble with someone if your child is under 14? even if it’s only for that one day.
