6 weeks pregnant - spotting red for one day and now a little brown today 😢

Hey everyone. I have googled this and read all the old threads but really wanted some recent stories of anyone who has or is going through the same.
I’m now around 6 weeks pregnant (last period was 8th sept) and Sunday I had some pink discharge and nothing else then Monday a little blood throughout the day but not a lot and it stopped that evening and turned brown and today only a tiny bit of brown discharge/maybe old blood. I have no cramps or anything that I would describe as painful. The doctor said I have to just wait for 7-10 days and then retest and if bleeding gets heavy then to call back.
I had 2 x positive tests on a first response a couple of days after my period was due but the cheap test strips always showed negative that’s why I bought a first response.
I know I have to just wait and see but has anyone else had this or experiencing this and it so what happened? Thanks in advance xx

Hi OP. I had a bit of spotting in the early weeks with three out of four of my pregnancies. It's very common. You get a lot more blood flowing to the cervix during pregnancy and it can be easily irritated...spotting often occurs after sex or exercise etc. It's so hard not to worry though, isn't it? Are you getting pregnancy symptoms? It's early days for obvious symptoms too though x

LittleTiger007 · 13/10/2020 12:44

Sadly I think you need to just do as the doctor said and wait and see. I know that is hugely frustrating and worrying. Many women spot throughout pregnancy and it’s no problem at all. Also some have a small period type bleed for a month or two during pregnancy and that too is no issue and they have healthy pregnancies (I have read many threads on this). I’ve only had one experience myself; I had a small amount of bleeding and had a scan at 8 weeks and I’d lost the baby. I had a medical management to clear it at week 10.
Don’t panic, this could be absolutely fine and I pray that it is. Keep calm and keep taking vitamins etc and wait and see. I wish i had a better answer. I’m currently at 8 weeks again... it’s a nerve wracking wait!

PinglePongle · 13/10/2020 12:49

I had this at 6 weeks too, apparently its quite common at 6 weeks or so I was told by a midwife at the time

blinkybill47 · 13/10/2020 12:55

I had bright red fresh blood suddenly at 6 weeks ...last a couple of days... Ultrasound showed baby was ok.... I had the same kind of bleeding every week or 2 up until 16 weeks... Every time I was convinced it was over. It's so hard not to stress and go crazy. My baby was born at 38 weeks beautiful and healthy

DMT1982 · 13/10/2020 14:32

Thanks for all your kind words, advice and stories ladies I really appreciate it.
I already have a 2 year old and an 37 now so didn’t expect to fall pregnant first time of trying again so whatever happens at least everything is working down there to fall pregnant in the first place 😊
I’ve had no more spotting or anything so far today so will just have checkknickersitis until Sunday when I can re test again xx

If it’s stopped then hopefully that’s a good sign! Fingers crossed @DMT1982

mummabubs · 13/10/2020 15:00

I had bleeding at about the same time in my first pregnancy - I was sent to the epu and scan showed all was OK. I think the fact the bleeding has stopped and also that you aren't experiencing any cramps or pain is cautiously promising. I can remember the midwife telling me that bleeding in early pregnancy isn't normal, but is common. Will have fingers crossed for all being well for you x

DMT1982 · 13/10/2020 15:08

Thanks @LittleTiger007 and @mummabubs ☺️
I have read so much on how common it is during pregnancy which does make me feel better but also I then have to kick myself into touch because you’re right it’s not normal even though very common.
This is going to be a very loooooong week, just keep praying I have no more bleeding.
Will an EPU always scan you if by some miracle I am still showing as pregnant on Sunday will I get referred do you think? Xx

LajesticVantrashell · 13/10/2020 15:12

I had similar at a similar time. Called the EPU and they said it was more than likely 'settling in' bleeding. It stopped after a few days and I went on to have a successful pregnancy (but never did quite relax!!)

mummabubs · 13/10/2020 15:53

I'd hope they'd refer you @DMT1982, I'm not sure whether Covid has changed things. I also remember when it happened to me I looked on mumsnet and it seemed to be a bit of a postcode lottery as to how epu referrals worked even then. I'm now pregnant with number 2 and have to say I keep expecting to find blood due to my experience last time which doesn't make for a very relaxing first trimester!

DMT1982 · 13/10/2020 16:16

Thanks @mummabubs and @LajesticVantrashell for your replies.
That’s really reassuring to hear that you’ve both had similar experiences and they turned out well for you both.
You’re right everything is a postcode lottery these days and Covid will not help that I’m sure! I know some trusts scan you three times and some only twice. I know from friends that because of Covid the first time they are seeing a midwife is 24 weeks 😳 if that’s the case I may pay for private scans just for peace of mind.
@LajesticVantrashell with your bleeding how long did it go on for and did you only chat with the EPU and not go in for any scans to check? Xx

I had spotting/light bleeding that lasted about 5 days between weeks 6 and 7. Started light brown CM, then a more liquid brown later that day and continued like that for a few days on and off - even some darker red blood on one occasion, and 'coffee grounds' type blood in the loo towards the end. No cramping or pain, and no bright red blood.

I was completely terrified, especially as I had an ectopic pregnancy in the summer - so they scanned me at 5+4 and luckily saw a yolk sac. And yesterday I had a 7 week viability scan and everything looked good - even saw the heartbeat for the first time which was incredible. I'm having initial private scans because this pregnancy started out a little more high risk due to my ectopic.

Doctor said that a) it really is incredibly normal, b) is delayed-release implantation bleeding - which is sort of everything to do with early pregnancy development in the uterus/increased blood flow down there, and c) to be more worried only if theres lots of bright red blood or cramping - and even then it Can be fine still. BUT definitely definitely get everything checked out if you're worried, as for my ectopic I had only a tiny bit of pink/brown spotting, except with cramping (felt like really bad indigestion), and they caught it just in time - ruptured as I was going into surgery later that day.

Good luck and hope everything goes well for you

mrswilso · 14/10/2020 11:20

Joining for a hand hold 💕
I'm going through similar right now. 6+4 today and it's easing off this morning but I'm so worried 🥺 it started on Sunday and it's been light, pink/red when wiping and the occasional teeniest amount on my liners.
I've got a scan booked for 8 weeks but the place I've booked with have appointments available tonight...I'm debating trying to switch my deposit and go in today but not sure if they'd be able to tell me anything solid right now ☹️
How you doing today?

HCFP · 14/10/2020 11:50

Ooh, I would definitely go in today - why put yourself through another 10+ days of anxiety! They'll be able to tell you at least if the embryo implanted in the right place, if there's a yolk sac and if your cervix looks ok. They might possibly even show you a heartbeat.

mrswilso · 14/10/2020 12:14

I've just changed the booking just not @HCFP ✨6.40 tonight...praying for a heartbeat ❤️

HCFP · 14/10/2020 12:17

Good luck @mrswilso! And dont worry if they can't show you one yet, there are tonnes of stories of women pre 7 weeks who don't and it goes on to be fine.

mrswilso · 14/10/2020 12:28

Thank you @HCFP 💕
I'll update when I've been in x

DMT1982 · 14/10/2020 12:33

@HCFP thanks very much for the info and your story 💋
I always suffer with indigestion not just in pregnancy but just in general. When you say it felt like bad indigestion when you had your ectopic pregnancy do you mean tummy cramps or feeling like your food is sat on your chest? Xx

OP posts:
DMT1982 · 14/10/2020 12:35

@mrswilso thanks for jumping on board to hold my hand, sounds like you also need your hand held just as much. I would 100% bring the scan forward and looks like you have so well done and please update us later on, have everything crossed for you. Have you done anymore pregnancy tests since your spotting? Xx

OP posts:
mrswilso · 14/10/2020 13:34

I haven't done anymore tests yet @DMT1982 - I've got some FRER due to arrive tomorrow but I couldn't hold out any longer 😂
I really hope they can tell me something either way, it's the not knowing that's driving me insaaane!
How are you getting on?

DMT1982 · 14/10/2020 14:02

@mrswilso
No more bleeding just the tiniest spot of brown, no cramps just feel tired 💤 but I have a 2 year old so he keeps me on my toes 😂
I tested with a supermarket one and it said negative but I’ve only ever had positives from FRER even with my DS so need to order some. I don’t know if I’m just clutching at straws with it all but like you the not knowing is driving me insane xx

OP posts:
mrswilso · 14/10/2020 14:11

Fingers crossed so tight for us both 🤞🏻✨

HCFP · 14/10/2020 14:36

@DMT1982 It was more in my lower abdomen, more upset stomach-y, and the delightful feeling of 'rectal pressure' you read about with ectopics, apparently because there is inflammation and bleeding that puts pressure back onto your bowels. I was chugging away on gaviscon (which did help a bit, weirdly), but to be honest I sort of knew that there was something wrong and that there were more period like cramps too. This was Saturday evening-Monday and I went in for a scan on Tuesday and was operated on that evening.

DMT1982 · 14/10/2020 14:50

@mrswilso thanks for explaining as I appreciate it can’t be nice going back over all the details 😢
I haven’t had any tummy cramps or anything that I would say is a bad tummy. My indigestion has always been up in my chest and that comes and goes all the time even pre pregnancy.
I did 2 x FRER tests two days after my period was due and both were positive. I’ve now done 2 x supermarket own ones and they have both been negative.
There is no way the bleeding was a period on Sunday as it was so short and light, would not have even filled a panty liner. I’m just confused as to what goes on if on Sunday the FRER shows negative but I’ve still not had a period 🤷‍♀️ I will call the Doctors back whatever the result and see what they say xx

Definitely follow up with the GP after this weekends test @DMT1982
That's what's confusing me, I've had nowhere near enough bleeding for it to be a period either.
I know we've got COVID going on but I'm so unimpressed with the lack of care right now, I had to phone two different midwife teams before someone would take my details and actually listen to me yesterday. And even at that, although she was much more sympathetic she said the NHS wouldn't scan me before 8 weeks with bleeding. I know from reading up the past few days that this wasn't the case before COVID...I get that there's a lot of pressure on the NHS at the minute (I work in a pharmacy and I know first hand how awkward the GPs are making it all) but I don't think it excuses the way that early maternity care has been pushed aside...
